Weekend Open Thread: Imbasilico’s Hates the Super Bowl!

You think I’m kidding? Take a look at the top of this letter from Basilico’s Italian Restaurant, aka “Imbasilico’s,” aka BasiliCovid’s:

Getting drunk there and throwing up honors American Liberty and Freedom even more!

Just as a restaurant that specifically catered to furries (and gave 15% off to those arriving) in full regalia might be able to do good business as the go-to hangout for furries, so Basilico’s is apparently doing well enough as the go-to hangout for people who want a Blood Coronavirus Level exceeding 0.08%.

Now they’re going for even more broke than catering to furries, which if they ever tried apparently didn’t work out: catering to anti-maskers and Covid deniers who also hate football and have no pride in Los Angeles not only hosting this Weekend’s Super Bowl, and don’t care that the Rams playing in it, and that it looks likely to be the hottest Super Bowl of all time. (That last must be doubly offensive to Imbasilico’s if they are also climate change deniers — and wouldn’t you bet that they are?)

So if you hate the NFL and hate Los Angeles, and you hate Rams being back in LA, but you love people suffering and dying from Covid-19 and Long Covid, then you know where you can go — and I don’t mean Imbasilico’s.

[VERN SAYS: WTF??? And after a little research, it’s true, and they did this last year as well! It’s part of their brand now. Imbasilico’s hates the NFL because they make a point of wearing masks during the pandemic, AND they allow and even encourage KNEELING during the national anthem. Here’s their explanatory video from last year, watch it, it’s hilarious!]

This is your Super Bowl, global heating, socially distanced, Ram-rooting Weekend Open Thread. Talk about that and anything else you’d like, within reasonable bounds of decency and discretion. We’ll report the Super Bowl score here once it’s in, unless it’s too depressing — and then we might follow Trump’s lead and lie about it. (Furries.)

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.) His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
