Insurrection Day: Trump Must Resign This Minute

Donald Trump is responsible for today’s right-wing insurrection — and he needs to go away NOW!

Thousands of unmasked protesters have surrounded the Capitol Building in Washington D.C., overwhelming Capitol Police.  At least hundreds have entered the building itself.  Members of Congress have been issued gas masks and at least have been moved to secure locations.

This is not fiction — and this is not a drill.  This is an insurrection aiming at toppling our government.  “Wait until January 6,” President Trump has been saying.  Well, his violent supporters did so, and here they are.

President Trump, now tweeting at people to obey the police, is not only responsible for this, but he is completely ill-equipped to handle.  The President must invoke the Insurrection Act to bring in federal troops to contain and control violent demonstrators.  THIS, as opposed to any other civil unrest  that has happened this year, is exactly what that act is for.

Trump doesn’t have the gumption, and maybe not the will, so he must resign the presidency immediately and let Pence — who was inside the building and presumably not delusional, do it.  If Pence needs to invoke the 25th amendment, do it.

We need to watch what’s happening in our cities as well today and have police and sheriffs quash any right-wing violence in support of a coup.  Everyone else, including lefties who have fantasized about an insurrection, stay home, stay informed, and stay away from trouble.

UPDATE: How did the mob get into the building? Shaun King has the video showing that one solitary cop with a stick was stationed at the door to fend off a mob of hundreds, with thousands more behind them. Someone making these insane staffing decisions is complicit.

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.) His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
