As with the first swallow in Capistrano, as with the first pumpkin of spring, everyone looks forward to the election returns finally shambling into view!  The tentative plan at this moment is for your humbled scribe to stay at his station pretty much full time from now until whenever giving you the news with a bit of nastiness and sass (attributes that we’re trying to cultivate now that it looks like Hillary is likely to win.)  Your humbled scribe may get called out at some point to do some election law interventions, and may take some time off at some point to flit by a victory party or two — but only if he gets to see the Newman Cub there!  Otherwise — at your service!

  • Lowenthal and Linda Sanchez win in their worse county
  • Dana beat Savary by 19% — decent showing
  • Issa leads Applegate by 22.5% (7000 votes) in his best votes in his better county

    • Chang OC lead down to 3,739 (164/400 prcncts); LA lead down to 776 (22/96 prcts); No SB update

7:15  NYT site is giving me a map right now, so I’m going to take hopefully no more than 10-15 minutes to turn it into a chart of the 7:15 snapshot of the vote.  Then I can revise this more easily later.  Check back at 7:30!

7:00  RIGHT NOW, IT LOOKS LIKE THIS, going roughly from Northeast to Southwest, based on Electoral-Vote.com (the NYT site is smothered), with the states in BOLD being the only surprises (although I’ve been calling WI likely red for a week now):

Trump (Red) states called: NJ, WV, SC, GA, IN, KY, TN, AL, MS, WI, AR, LA, ND, SD, NE, OK, TX

“Red States” presumed to follow: MT, ID, UT

States currently marked pink:OH, KS

States only leaning pink:   NH, VA, NC, FL, MI, TX

States presumed pink:  IA, AZ, AL

Clinton (Blue) states called: VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, PA DE, MD, IL, MN, NM

“Blue States” presumed to follow: WA, OR, CA, HI + DC

States currently marked light blue: CO

States leaning light blue: ME, MO,

BUT — FL (while in the pink column) is TIED and its 29 EVs + 70 others are barely going Republican.  Only 14 EVs are barely going Democratic.  Dems have 78 safe votes on the west coast (incl. HI) and the Republicans only have 16, with NV, AZ, and AK (total 20 EVs) being swing states right now.

6:45:  If everything stayed as below, Trump would have 270.  Might add 30 or 40 more.  But those margins in most of those swing states are VERY thin, and currently he’s ahead by just a point in many of them.

6:25  Big slew of new states, mostly from the plains, are called, with Trump moving out to a 130-97 lead.  Again, NONE of these are unexpected; it’s just that the safe Trump states are registered earlier because of the direction of the rotation of the Earth with respect to the sun.  (ANOTHER thing Obama didn’t fix!)   We’ll put the entire current state of play in a different entry, the better to keep track of it.

6:15  Illinois to Clinton, Arkansas to Trump,  MEVINH (Maine, Virginia and New Hampshire) have joined MINCOH as too close to call.  Colorado, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Michigan are still predicted as likely for Clinton; North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, and Florida for Trump.  EV projection, 279-259.

5:55  North Dakota to Trump, Rhode Island to Clinton.  Trump up, 60-48.  Florida still neck and neck.  NYT projects Florida and Ohio to Trump, other battlegrounds to Clinton, for a 294-244 result.

5:40  Trump adds Alabama and South Carolina.  Still all according to script.  MINCOH and New Hampshire still painted light blue.

5:25  Tennessee added to Trump’s pile, putting him up 51-44 — but he is using up a lot of Southern states to maintain that lead, and the Mountwain West ain’t going to do it for him.  In the MINCOH states — Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio — Clinton is projected as the leader in all three.

5:15 — Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and Massachusetts added for Hillary; South Carolina and Oklahoma for Trump.  44-40 for Clinton; still no surprises or swing states.  Marco Rubio has been reelected in Floria, Rob Portman in Ohio.

5:00  Now the NYT forecast has Trump well ahead in Virginia, with Clinton forecast to win; Clinton ahead in Florida, with Trump forecast to win, and Clinton slightly ahead and forecast to win by a slight margin in North Carolina and Ohio.

4:48  The Guardian is releasing comparisons of AP results to polls in the states that have been called — and Trump’s margins are much bigger than polled.  But in Virginia and Florida — which the NY Times says is almost dead even, slight advantage to Hillary — the chatter is that Hillary is winning big in some generally reddish counties.  Very confusing; results seem to be all over the place, including with the NYT contradicting itself about Florida between its front page and forecasting page.

4:33  Trump pulls out to a 24-3 lead thanks to West Virginia!  Another insignificant non-surprise.  Votes starting to roll in from New Hampshire and the Virginia-to-Georgia-and-South Carolina Eastern Seaboard.

4:20  Hillary is beating expectations in Orlando, Tampa, and Tallahassee, Florida, as well as some suburban areas.  Good signs for her.  Without Florida, Trump would need to take Virginia, North Carolina, and one of the big Midwestern states besides Ohio.

4:11 p.m.  Trump is leading Clinton in the early Electoral Vote returns, 19 to 3!  Of course, that only means Kentucky and Indiana vs. Vermont, so it’s nothing unexpected or significant.

But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
