This year’s wild and expensive attacks on Sharon Quirk-Silva by Young Kim and Dishonest Dave Gilliard pervert democracy.
Sharon Quirk-Silva and I have our differences, but here she is right on the money.
I was going to write that Young Kim should be ashamed, but that’s not quite right. First, Young Kim should develop the capacity to feel shame. (And she’s sure not going to learn it from her former boss, Ed Royce.) Sharon took to Facebook this morning to blunt a vicious and personal attack.
Dear Friends,
I know this political season has been long and stressful for many. It has been incredibly difficult. People I talk to are sick and tired of ugly mail, and hateful TV ads.
As a candidate it is always a concern when negative mail is sent and hit pieces are created. It is very personal when lies are told. In competitive races both sides fire back and forth.
This week has been rougher than most. A new attack ads say that I want to let pervert or molester teachers off the hook to continue teaching in our schools. This is simply false and horrifying.
I have been teaching for 30 years. I started teaching when we used mimeographs. I have gone through three decades of shifts and changes in education. Teaching has evolved from a focus on phonics, to whole language, to Back to Basics, to English only, back to phonics, and now Common Core.
Throughout these years, I have seen my students grow up, get college degrees, and become responsible citizens in our community. Some of my former students are teachers, doctors, nurses, artist, and even an award winning cake maker!
Saying, that I would do anything to harm my students is not only false but very sad. Last year, we had to go through active shooter training, and just yesterday we all practiced for, The Great Shake Out! I guarantee not only would I put my life on the line for my students, but so would 99% of other teachers.
The last thing teachers want in their profession is a teacher that is not doing their job or even worse hurting a child. It hurts all of us.
There are 18 more days until this crazy election is over. It can’t happen soon enough. I have no idea what I will be hit with next, but attacking my profession is simply wrong.
Sincerely,
Sharon
The State of California and its legislature will survive regardless of whether Quirk-Silva retakes her old Assembly seat from Young Kim. If you’re already committed to one or the other, fine. But if you aren’t committed to one or the other, you can strike a blow for civility, honesty, and fairness in elections by voting for Quirk-Silva simply to tell her, Royce, and their wordsmith Dishonest Dave Gilliard that you’re sick of this sort of thing. The only way to get the attention of the sorts of people behind these sorts of attacks is to give the bullies a bloody nose at the ballot box.
Kim will likely be back in 2018 running against Quirk-Silva, and then we can reset the score to 0-0 and start again. But this year, she need to learn in no uncertain terms that there are limits — and that she has gone beyond them. We don’t have to take this sort of vicious lying nastiness lying down.
P.S.: Regarding a conversation we’ve had here recently, this is from the discussion on the above post:
Charlene Egizi I’m also concerned about the fact that your opponent is trying to say that you want to get rid of prop 13!!!
Sharon Quirk-Silva I support Prop 13-period.
We got youur back Sharon!!
