This came over our transom and appears to be legit: Apparently Orange Juice publisher and editor Vern Nelson is giving “the Best Concert Ever,” tomorrow – Saturday May 21, 5 to 7 pm – at the Huntington Beach Central Library (Talbert and Goldenwest.)
We feel compelled to point out that Nelson has claimed previously that he was doing the best concert ever – in fact, he has claimed that many times – but on the other hand, it is not impossible that each one is a little better than the previous one, is it? We report, you decide.
In any case, the program is allegedly as varied as ever, although this time it includes nothing from before 1900 – the classical composers represented being Bartok, Debussy and Ravel. We have managed to unearth some “YouTube videos” of Mr. Nelson playing two of those pieces he’ll be doing tomorrow – a Bartok Rumanian Dance and the Prelude from Debussy’s Suite Pour le Piano:
If we are to believe Mr Nelson’s press release, it would appear that this is not merely a solo performance; rather he will be joined by his old friend and co-conspirator Perry Van Dran to premiere two or three numbers from their original rock opera-in-progress “R&R Earwig,” as well as five-year old Bree Wareh (daughter of Huntington Beach anti-High Density Activist Bruce Wareh) who will be singing two Disney songs of all things: “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid and “Let it Go” from Frozen. Searching the YouTube some more, we managed to locate a video of this same Bree performing “Roar” at last February’s “Surf City Got Talent” competition:
Is that all? No, don’t be silly. Mr. Nelson also promises to play “Blue Rondo a la Turk” (as it was recently Dave Brubeck Day), a repeat performance (by popular demand) of his dark holiday favorite “Dirty Snow,” several pieces and songs which he is keeping as surprises, and by special request of Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait (who will be there with his lovely wife Julie) the historic ditty “When the Kleptos Caved.”
And even THAT’s not all. Our research indicates, that, as each of our favorite rock musicians of the 70’s and 80’s shuffles off this mortal coil to that Great Gig in the Sky, Mr. Nelson has worked in a tribute to them at his concerts – from a lengthy David Bowie singalong in January, to ELP’s “Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends…” in March when Keith Emerson died. So naturally at THIS concert he will be doing a couple of songs by PRINCE. (Prince Rodgers Nelson, that is, possibly a distant relation?) First, the very enigmatic, colorful and catchy “Computer Blue”:
And in closing, the beloved “When Doves Cry,” during which everyone will be asked to sing along with the refrain as best they can:
How can you just leave me standing
Alone in a world that’s so cold?
Maybe I’m just too demanding,
Maybe I’m just like my father, too bold!
Maybe you’re just like my mother,
She’s never satisfied.
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like when the doves cry…
According to what came over our transom, this show costs $10, although there’s a note specifying $5 “for kids, the indigent, and the perplexed.” Whatever that means. Sounds pretty good actually. We believe we’ll go!
And if THAT’s not enough excitement…

This is your Exciting Weekend Open Thread. Discourse on this that or the other, within “broad bounds of decency, decorum … dignity…” you know the drill. GO!
Have some news from a Joe Dunn event – the second one in the Anna Drive neighborhood: Martin Lopez is NOT running for council (in the 4th district, against Lucille.). He joins the storied ranks of politicians who “consulted with their families” and their families said “F**k that noise.”
I guess that leaves us, very tentatively, with Father Arturo Ferreras as the next best choice. Damn. I liked Martin better.
It may not be permanent, but it still makes sense that one of them would step aside. Martin’s a stand-up guy.
You know, maybe I’ll have to throw my hat into this ring. They drew 4 in such a weird way it includes my crib.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dunno — are you really prepared to debate Lucille Kring?
William Fitzgerald vs Lucille Kring
I avoided Fitz for two months when he called Jordan a “sick faggot” and “evil Jew.”
Now that he’s (against my pleading) insulted Bill Dalati’s pre-teen daughters, I’m gonna have to give him a MUCH longer time-out.
Big bad Dan is back at his favorite trick: personally insulting others means, while claiming superiority. Ryan should sue him and then kick his ass.
Jay, kicking his ass would provide some short term satisfaction, but unfortunately it would require physical contact.
There’s a tribe in Costa Rica that shares habitat with a bright pink toad that exudes a toxic slime. They have a useful saying: don’t touch the toad.
Also, something about pigs, wrestling, mud…
Don’t touch the toad.
Thanks for the laugh, Jay.
I don’t think I can collect damages for general douchebaggery! In any case, I suggest you do like the rest of us and enjoy the circus. For all his faults, Dan puts on a pretty good show.
There sure was a lot of talk about his douchebaggery where I just was an hour ago. At least three different good Democrats asked things on the order of, “Why is Dan such a douchebag? How long has he been such a douchebag? I hadn’t really looked at his blog before, but does he always twist the truth as much as he has been lately?”
And I had to explain, public relations, polishing turds, etc etc…
Well, Vern, he gets something out of tearing people down. I have no idea what it is, but it must be a big part of his life. He certainly spends an overt amount of his time and energy on it.
The answer to question #1 is that he was seriously bullied or abused as a kid. Some turn that into a positive. Others become nasty little pieces of shit themselves.
“Public Relations” is a dodge. I doubt that anybody would pay money to such an mental oaf. As with Cunningham, he can’t write well, he can’t proof read and he can’t think straight.
just to be clear: we’re discussing Chemical Lewinksy?
The same.
*Love the photos and videos Chairman Vern…..good job.
The rest of you, please leave the lovely Lucille alone. She has paid those Republican party dues for too long and we personally love her very much. How about Michelle Martinez? Is she doing OK too. We missed our opportunity to see Joe Dunn in person and we are broken hearted about that. Maybe he will give us another chance! Kamala looks good for November. We had hoped that Loretta would use the footage from the Bucket Dump for her ad. These people really have to think out of the box….oh well.
Lucille is a senile racist and pathological liar.
*Chairman Vern,
You seem to only know her “darker” side. The political side..
Yeah… duh… play croquet with her I don’t give a hoot. She should not be in power over people’s lives and pocketbooks.
So how many sides are there? And which ones should be ignored?
That sums it up pretty well.
Wondering why there was no WOT last weekend …..
I will never forget that, it was awful. The weekend there was no open thread. And all the people were singing, and all the bells were ringing, they went na na na na na na na…
We knew it would irritate you.
You may not have heard the song by The Band – describes my ancestral victimization – for which I demand reparations.

The Donald is coming to Anacrime, time to get out the bandannas, masks and bullhorns Vern!
*That will be interesting….to be sure! Angel’s Stadium or at the Pond?
The Convention Center.
It’s funny someone out there associates me with the anti-Trump protesters. I am against Trump, but when I showed up at the Anaheim Council that night it was to criticize Kris Murray for her pointless, demagogic, and illegal motion AGAINST Trump, and for my troubles I got called a “Trump supporter” by some simpletons in the protester crowd.
“The Night they drove old Dixie Down and all the bells were ringin….” 1970….whew.
Some interesting new data from the GOP primary;
“Additional data from the GOP primary shows that increased turnout in several primary states was driven largely by already-active Republican voters who have historically skipped primaries and voted only in general elections.”

LOL. Ya really can’t make this shit up:
“During a February speech in New Hampshire, Trump suggested that Johnson, who was born to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical family, would impede Bush from renegotiating Medicare drug prices, as Trump has promised to do.
NBC reported:
Trump predicted Jeb Bush would avoid taking on the issue as president because Woody Johnson, whose family founded Johnson & Johnson, served as his campaign chairman.
“I have no friends, as far as I’m concerned,” Trump said. “You know who my friends are? You’re my friends.”
By contrast, Trump said his private fortune would enable him to say no to wealthy interests after the election. He’s complained recently that he doesn’t get enough credit for self-financing — Trump does accept campaign donations, but he and Bernie Sanders are the only two major candidates turning down super PAC support.
“I don’t need your money, I need your vote,” Trump said.
The same Johnson is now working for Trump in a similar role.”
