For this Weekend Open Thread, I’m going to engage in some shameless self-promotion. I’m having a low-cost fundraiser for my District Attorney campaign — $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and yes we will need your address, occupation, employer, etc. because this is a political contribution — at Anaheim’s Linbrook Bowl on Saturday, May 17, from 1-3 (or, if we feel like it and we have more money, until even later.) As the package would cost you about $10 anyway, this is a modestly priced event, intended for people from the community (at least those who bowl or are willing to hang around bowlers) to meet each other, meet me if they haven’t yet, and enjoy the afternoon.
For my part, I will start giving a speech about all of the issues in the race promptly at 1:15 and will finish promptly by 2:45. (No! No, I will not do that. Ignore that first sentence.) But I will be willing to pinch hit for you for a frame or two, if you really really suck at bowling. No guarantees that I’ll improve on your score. And if you don’t bowl, come anyway — suggested donation, $1900 or (considerably smaller) best offer — and hang out. If you eat from the fabled Linbrook snack bar (and wet bar, as I understand it), they will surely appreciate it and may hustle us out of there less rapidly than otherwise.
Here are more of the details. You can RSVP to DiamondForDA at gmail period com:
This is your self-serving, in the service of myself serving the people of Orange County, Weekend Open Thread. Talk about that, or anything else you’d like, within reasonable bounds of decency and decorum. Bowling jokes are unacceptable unless they are funny — but any references to The Big Lebowski are OK.
According to my wonky college buddy Bill Orton, this bill removing the cap on the number of HOV Toll Lanes that can be approved by the California Transportation Commission passed its first committee on a vote of 11-0.
To the ramparts! This shall not stand!
Here’s the bill, from the usually-better-than-this Sen. Ed Hernandez:
HOT lanes in LA are a failure for all but the wealthy — but their magnitude of Fail is NOTHING compared to what we’ll see if the 405 — or, god help us, the 5 and 22 as well — go to partly toll lanes and partly crowded and ignored lanes. We’ll have more on this, of course.
Just received a mailer up here in AD-55 from Ling-Ling Chang. Her OC endorsers include: Tony Rackauckas, Pat Bates, and Janet Nguyen; Brea’s Marty Simonoff; La Habra’s Tom Beamish and Tim Shaw; and various Republican pols from Placentia and Yorba Linda.
You LOSE, Madam! That is NOT a good list.
If you’re not voting for Gregg Fritchle, as you should be, support Steve Tye for AD-55 — because, bad as he is, he’s neither Ling-Ling Chang nor Philip Chen!
Trivia Linbrook Bowl Tip
The beautiful Calabria Apartments are located right behind. This is where Harry Sidhu (or Hide-and-Seek Harry as he became known), water carrier for the Anaheim Kleptocracy, faked a residence to run for County Supervisor in 2010. The well-documented fraud involved not one but two perjuries on official voter registrations (moving in and moving out) since he never lived there at all according to an investigation by Bill Hunt.
That is all.
Haha, that character had a cameo in part three of my Paul Lucas saga.
Oh yeah, I have to finish that thing….
And also this, since I know there will never be any sort of recantation:

I already posted this more than 20 hours ago (check the time-stamp):

You may know the answer: did Martha have an attorney with family law experience? If she did, then the judicial system has spoken and I accept the court’s findings. If she didn’t, then that’s one of the problems with the judicial system, but we endure it.
How about a separate post? You know just for a little balance.
The family law court judge said Martha (or whatever her name is this week) was totally discredited. She couldn’t even get her own story straight on the stand. He also said the Fullerton cops didn’t have enough evidence to even arrest him in the first place.
Norby was thrown in jail and outed by malicious cops. The usual suspects piled on with stories about him being a crazy drunk. This went far beyond the political fun and games we all enjoy.
My question was whether she had competent counsel. I hope that she also testified through a translator.
Ok, your first shot was that I wasn’t going to acknowledge it. I already had. Now you want a separate story. You’re far more informed than I am about what happened there, so I’d be happy to see you write one. My guess is that that too would not satisfy you — and that you’ll want ME to write it.
So I’ll tell you what: lay out ALL of your demands and I’ll see if I think I can and should honor them. Do you have a transcript, just in case you want me to REALLY put my intellectual power into analyzing it? Because, without that, what I have to say is that she had her day in court before a judge with a good overall reputation — and she lost — and I respect that result. I bet that you want more, though — right?
I ran into Bushala yesterday, and he told me all about it. He’s gonna send me more info. I was planning to do a piece on Norby’s vindication. It was more exciting before I realized Pedroza had beaten us to it. But I still will do it, cuz the story should also be on the OJ blog, and I can get a lot more details.
I have no “demands.” I am not in a position to demand anything.
You, however, are in a position to follow the dictates of your conscience and sense of fair play, at the very least. Or not.
If I were you, I would at least write a short post highlighting the judicial outcomes, especially given the amount of verbiage I showered the thing with to begin with, challenging the accused to prove his innocence, denying the accused the benefit of the doubt (a fairly fundamental concept for those charged in our justice system) and casting aspersions on those who really did know what was going on at Casa Norby.
Vern, the whole thing has been ugly, and for Norby and especially the kids, it may well get worse before it gets better, even with his vindication. Hopefully that stuff will just be left alone.
I don’t think the story is “exciting” so much as providing a simple lesson for those across the blogosphere who condemned the poor dope for what I appeared to be mostly political reasons since there was never a shred of evidence or corroboration of the woman’s claims.
VOC has been singularly silent on the topic now that the ex-politician has been cleared – which is a damn shame given their earlier fascination and willingness to quote the accuser verbatim.
WOW!
I may actually attend this. After all, I was n the Beckman Instruments 1984 CHAMPIONSHIP squad: “The Bowling Stones”, yeah, I named them.
In the spirirt of the open thread, I can’t help but notice that Adam and his VOC brethren IMEDIATELY scrapped the wonderful comments disproving Dan C. and frankly embarrassing Adam, Nick and Noberto. Albeit fairly and tastefully. Clearly the TRUTH is tough for the South county crowd. Especially the “hard hitting” truth the they espouse.
The trouble with bragging about even handedness, is you actually have to practice it.
I better start stretching, so as to kick some ass next weekend.
Now I understand why I felt a chill down my spine a little under an hour ago!
Hey, you’re welcome to attend! Bring willie de ville and anon while you’re at it!

Is this one of those Ben-Ghazi things, LOL? You guys, in your own little world….
No, Vern — it must be true, because skally said “Epic.” And he’s hep.
You are Fu^&ed Diamond.
Haw in the world can you possibly run against this:

Take the money you’ve raised so far and blow it on booze at Linbrook.
That is one sharp woman.
Yeah — and that’s just her elbows!
The real question would be your comittment to the race Greg.
For example, would you let me and Moxely go through YOUR make-up drawer (Andy Galvin/Julio Perez style) and publish to the world, your beauty secrets?
That would be a sign of character and perhaps life changing for Scott and I, but then again OLD SPICE might get more votes than MAC…..Then again maybe not.
My beauty secret isn’t a secret: it’s marry a beautiful wife with beautiful children and just hope that people assume that, given all that, I must be better looking than I am.
Our TV can’t get PBS, so I just saw this Frontline episode online- If you have about 2 hours to sit through it, time well spent. (Part 2 next week) “The United States of Secrets”

Watched this last night.

What is it with you and low hanging fruit?
But did she say, “Read my lips?”
She can’t move her lips ………
I will not be able to make it. I heard that Beelzebub may show up….Good to see that the Weekly has provided fair coverage. One of their commenters is questioning your candidacy based on this argument :
“Got a chance to become familiar over some time with G Diamonds’ “politics” on the FFFF website. Imo, he is as wishy-washy as they come. Would not be surprised if he was approached by the re-elect T-rack crowd, to run against him, as a “token” candidate, just to keep up appearances.”
Yeah – as I recall, they thought that because I called the case correctly from pretty much the outset:
That crowd did not brook disagreement well. The notion that Rackauckas is happier to have had a even a token candidate (if that’s what I turn out to be) than a free ride is an example of the worst jumping to conclusions that typified FFFF. Thankfully, smarter people also participated there.
Whew — finally got to comment there again! Sadly, it mean pulling Internet Explorer out of cold storage.
So how successful was the fundraiser? Remember that at least you need to beat Elmer Fudd…
…and don’t use Internet Explorer, use https://duckduckgo.com/
It went well. More people paid than showed up, which is better than the reverse! We had a very good time — and yes, I broke 100! (Once.)
