Here’s a “cute story” that isn’t cute at all:
Slate as an article up right now entitled “Hillary Clinton Ducks Flying Shoe Thrown During Las Vegas Speech” that shows the former Senator and Secretary of State hunched over with her hand clenched spasticly — the sort of shot that will inevitably show up with “cute” captions from now until she leaves the office of the Presidency in January 2025. Click the link if you want to see it; I’m not going to reproduce it here.
Instead, I’m showing you a still from the accompanying video. That blur you see behind her head is one frame — I think that it’s probably 1/24 of a second, but someone here can correct me — showing the path of the shoe behind her head. As you’ll see, she’s not ducking at all. Her immediate reaction, when she hunkered down, was to ask “was that a bat?” That suggests that she didn’t see it well, even though she was facing in that direction.
She didn’t see it well not only because it was coming almost straight at her face, but because it was going pretty fast. We can make a “wild-ass guess” — a technique that I used to teach students on the first day of my Statistics class, when I could be pretty confident that they hadn’t done the reading — of an estimate of its speed.
The blur is about 2.5 times the width of her head. (The further it was behind her in this image, the larger it actually way, but let’s use 2.5 here.) Let’s estimate that her head (including her hair) is 10 inches front to back. So, that would mean that the blur in the image covers a span of 25 inches. Subtract a little for the width of the shoe, adjust for it being further away from the camera, and that makes it about two feet. If it is 24 frames per second, that would mean that it was traveling about 48 feet per second.
From there, we can do a little basic math. That’s 2,880 feet per minute, or 172,800 feet per hour. Divide by 5,280 feet per mine, and that’s about 33 miles per hour. Had the woman throwing it aimed just a little better, it would have hit her square in the front of the face. Do we estimate that the shoe weight about a pound? At that speed, the force would easily be enough to break her nose.
Most of you know me as a critic of the right, but I’m also often a critic of the left. That would routinely get me into hot water on Daily Kos. One of the worst such examples occurred back when a Middle Eastern reporter — with what I expect was a much better grievance than the woman had here — threw a shoe at President George W. Bush while he stood at a press conference. Many people, including those who should have known better, reveled in it, just like I expect you’ll see detractors of Hillary doing today.
I was horrified, partly by the event itself, but more so by the reaction. I spent what seemed like days arguing with people who thought they were enlightening me on the cultural significance of throwing a shoe in Muslim cultures and justifying it as an act of resistance to what I agreed was the vicious, unjustified, and criminal war of choice in Iraq. That may justify choice to act in violence to that reporter and those around him, I responded, but it doesn’t justify our choice to cheer at it. I got (metaphorically) pummeled there, with very few allies, but I continued and continue to hold that position. (Current political critics of mine, take note.)
Whether I respect the politician doesn’t enter into my calculations. I probably won’t support Hillary in the primary if she runs, but if she wins I will support her in the general election — and that doesn’t matter. If you’re opposed to violence against political candidates, you should stick with the principle. If you don’t, then the political competition turns from who has the best ideas (which is good) and who has the most money and best campaign team (not so good, though people act as if it were) to whose supporters has the most willingness to do violence. That may not be “Anti-American” in practice, but it sure is “Anti-American” in principle.
I held this view long before I ever considered being a candidate for office. Some candidates for office, those who cultivate a persona of pleasant innocuousness, are probably relatively secure from attack. For candidates who take positions that seriously threaten others’ interests — and I’m proud to be one of them — the prospect of campaign violence is sobering. (It is becoming more so with the introduction of mandatory concealed carry into Orange County. That’s not me opposing Second Amendment rights there, just me speaking the truth.)
Using the threat of violence to suppress candidates from running for office, or from taking strong stands that challenge people on the left or right or in between, is an assault on our society. An attack on a police officer, outside of the rare case of legitimate imminent self-defense, cuts at the rule of law and order — but we have a strong social immune system to fight back against anyone who does so.
Attacks on a candidate serve only to ensure that candidates — most of whom do not run for office accepting risk of death or injury as a reasonably likely consequence of their choices — are as inoffensive and deferential to people who might consider violence as possible. “Who is more likely to commit violence against me if I take a position?” is not the question that we want candidates considering as they form their views — and it is certainly not the area in which we want political factions to compete.
So I condemn this attack — and I don’t care whether I’d agree with the attacker 100% on a long list of issues. I do so not only as a political observer, but as someone volunteering this year to be in firing range. It should go without saying that I’d take such matters with utmost gravity as District Attorney, even if the target of attack is my worst enemy.
Orange Juice Blog Contest: WRITE PAUL LUCAS!
Paul Lucas, targeted by police for running a medical marijuana dispensary but ultimately convicted only for the possession of a small amount of meth left in his house without his approval by his girlfriend, is currently in Theo Lacy jail — and it sucks. Partly it sucks because being in jail sucks; partly it sucks because he has multiple medical problems and is being forced off of his drug regimen, instead using drugs with nasty side effects. (He’s an example of someone who, were I DA, would likely have been kept under house arrest, where he could use his own medications. Why we’re spending public money to torture him eludes me.)
Anyway — Paul is bored and he wants mail. You can write him — and note the first name you’ll use for him! — at this address:
John P. Lucas
Booking # 2815941
501 City Drive South
Orange, CA 92868
Theo Lacy Facility
He’d like people to send reading material — anything from paperbacks to story clippings, anything from the Register to the Christian Science Monitor to the New Yorker to printed-off stories from local blogs — as well. (Don’t expect to get it back; for all we know, it will be confiscated. But one never knows until one tries.) I’ll be visiting him sometime next week, so if you can get them to me, I’ll deliver them. (I’m contributing some John Le Carre paperbacks.) DO NOT SEND CONTRABAND. DO NOT SEND PORN. DON’T BE AN IDIOT.
Paul is also welcoming contributions that will allow him to buy things like envelopes and stamps — and if anyone there is willing to accept his collect calls, let me know. Write Vern at his e-mail address to get information about how you give him some money.
Send OJB a copy of what you send Paul and you’ll be entered into the “Write Paul Lucas contest” — enter as many times as you’d like! — the winner of which, as judged by Paul Lucas, will receive a prize to be determined by Vern, which probably means something like a discount on a CD of his, but could be something even better.
This is your Weekend Open Thread. Talk about that, or anything else you’d like, within reasonable bounds of decency and decorum.
within reasonable bounds of decency and decorum….well there goes nearly anything I wanted to discuss.
DO NOT SEND CONTRABAND. DO NOT SEND PORN. DON’T BE AN IDIOT.
While I think anyone engaging in the trade of objectifying women for profit is an idiot, I honestly did not know they were not permitted porn in jail. So once again i learn something new at OJB. Not sure how useful it is, but I learn.
Will send a package to Paul…or..John P. I am sure to have a spare Bible around here somewhere.
Paul would love to just have a few pages of your writing! He says “I feel myself getting dumber every minute I’m in here.”
I don’t know if one can send porn to a jail. The question has never come up for me. This, however, is not how I’d want to find out that one can’t.
Paul probably already has access to a Bible. If you want to save his soul, send him something like “The Screwtape Letters” — but don’t get your hopes up!
He’s got at least one religious book already, which he got second or thirdhand from Seal Beach mass murderer Scott Dekraai, whom he can see “at all times.” Paul’s letters from jail are priceless and I was wanting to publish excerpts as “The Epistles of Paul” but Greg thinks I should wait till he’s out. Mostly they focus on the huge waste of taxpayer resources in there. But still I think I can print the bit about how he ended up with Scott Dekraai’s inspirational literature:
“…Dekraai gets books sent in to him, and the Deputies mark the book with his booking # and name. When he’s done with the book he gives it away to someone in the module. That’s how I got one of his books. It’s fuckin weird shit for sure man. Here I am in Theo Lacy (for simple possession) within speaking distance of the person who has committed the largest (body count) and most notorious mass murders in Orange County history! And I get one of his books that he has read and had sent in to him from some Christian organization or individual. The book is called “90 Minutes in Heaven” by Don Piper. It’s a story about a minister who was killed in a car crash, died instantly and and experienced heaven only to be revived 90 minutes later. The story is geared toward those who have been severely injured or have lost a loved one in unexplainable events, to help them cope with the loss. I’m assuming it was meant to help this guy cope with murdering so many innocents by describing heaven…”
Why not send him blank journals and he can write about his experience. I was going to ask if he found Jesus hanging out in jail (apparently many say they found him there) but I was afraid I would piss off some religious person (since its close to Easter)…
of course you cant send porn to jail dont be an idiot. and cynthia ward, porn is a good thing my sweet. ive been in jail before and what paullucas needs is letters and cash you can mail money orders directly to him if its easier just make it out to the sheriffs dept with pauls name and booking number on it and done. I’ll pledge 25 bucks lets see if more people can do the same im sure any amount can help out a lot. jail is a horrible place especially when you know you shouldnt be there.
Jose,
I got your letter and the 25 dollars you sent me. As you may know, the simple act of getting a letter from someone on the outside is more uplifting than anyone can ever appreciate without having that experience. I am in debt to you and to Vern Nelson for going the extra mile to send me mail and Vern for putting money on his phone so I can speak to someone on the outside. Greg did me a great deal of good by visiting me. But the Official Visits announcement in the pod at 12 midnight made have to backpedal a lot on those guys who thought is strange to get an official visit at that hour.
I had asked you if it was OK to visit that late, Paul! That was a busy week. Anyway, the first time was at a more proper hour. Not much more proper, but more.
It’s good to see you out. Take care of yourself and don’t be a stranger to OJB,
Im here man just getting acclaimated to the time changes and all. Im used to getting up at 3 am for breakfast and med call.
I am watching the events in Nevada between the ranchers and the feds. Will this turn in to Waco? I understand the militia is coming from other states and most of the protesters who are already on the ranchers land, who is at the center of the dispute are armed.
If you don’t know what is going on here is a link to the news story
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/cliven-bundy-nevada-rancher-fights-federal-government-over-grazing/
I’m not big on guns…but from what has been going on lately with the government lies, NSA spying, the IRS taking money from adults whose parents were over paid disability checks DECADES ago…
http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/social-security-treasury-target-hundreds-of-thousands-of-taxpayers-for-parents-old-debts/2014/04/10/74ac8eae-bf4d-11e3-bcec-b71ee10e9bc3_story.html
High unemployment and underemployment and probably more that I am forgetting… I completely understand why Americans are fighting to keep their weapons. If I didn’t think I would accidently just shoot myself, I would own one.
Oh yes, I remember …our government dictates where we are allowed to have “free speech” by designating free speech zones and they dictate how many are allowed to protest (this is what is going on in Nevada)… but I also remember Greg telling me last year that cities have something called a time and place or something like that, which basically tells me, an American citizen where and what time I can hand out literature (considered free speech).
Since when did we give away our right to speak out against our government? Was it after 9/11? Are we going to continue to allow our civil rights to be chipped away while we “passively” send emails to our representatives asking them “please stop misbehaving” or signing petitions to get their attention?
How bad does it have to get before we get off of duffs and into the streets and take back our country? I know I won’t let some government bureaucrat tell me how to spend my money, where to protest or to just plain shut up.
If you think we are getting money-out-of-politics anytime soon, I got swamp land in Florida to sell you. Most of our government is corrupt, whether it’s Anaheim City Council or the Halls of Congress. They are making laws to protect THEIR interests and keep YOU in line.
I definitely changed my opinion about the gun issue and I can thank the behavior of our lawmakers for that.
What about you? Are you fed up with the way our country is headed?
Interesting situation, thanks for including the link. How come you didn’t post this as a separate piece?
The situation is too fluid and from what I understand there is a media blackout, especially in Nevada. I might write a separate post, depending on what happens today. I am getting updates from social media.
The situation in Nevada is NOT between “ranchers” and the Feds, but between ONE rancher who has IGNORED court orders to get his cattle off PUBLIC LANDS! All the other ranchers manage to pay the fees and comply with the BLM, but not this guy.
Only easily duped and hysterical fools are lining up behind this rancher. The Koch brothers are using them to gin up more ANTI-GOVERNMENT FERVOR!
Ha ha not surprising that Inge has fallen for this bullshit as she always delves so deep into her subject.
*Thanks for the clarification Dr. “A”……good mysteries are harder and harder to find. Just look at the Flight MH370 for example. The whole world can’t even figure out”What is a ping?” Inspector Clouseau could do better……
I missed you. Have you been getting your hair done?
Oooh smack! I am sooo impressed with your oh-so-snappy and IRRELEVANT comeback.
Why don’t you try using some FACTS to back up your assertions so we can have a REAL DEBATE next time?
Why not use your real name if you are so hip on having a real debate? It’s easy to sound tough while hiding behind an online persona.
Inge, trying to out an anonymous commenter is bogus. If you don’t like anonymous commenters, you’re participating on the wrong blog.
The BLM is withdrawing its roundup due to safety concerns. Once again, guns and the threat of “doing whatever it takes” wins the day in America.
http://news.yahoo.com/feds-abruptly-end-cattle-roundup-nevada-182151239.html
Bundy the bully and lawbreaker wins, for now.
Happy, Inge?
What does my name have to do with the FACTS of this issue?
Red herrings won’t make you appear smarter Inge, they just highlight the BIG NOTHIN’ you’re offering up.
Greg, I will not vote for Hillary. Period.
Well, but also … don’t throw your shoe at her.
*Love is an old shoe? Not so much…..when George dodge his. Not so much when that blond lady threw hers at Hillary. They were both pretty spry….in their responses…eh?
Ugghhhh…. patience is a bird shoe.
*Bye bye shoe birdie…we hardly knew ye…much?
Hey look, now Zenger’s doing it!
http://www.orangejuiceblog.com/2012/11/comment-like-the-winships-weekend-open-thread/
*if you can’t beet em … join em ….. ANYWAY!!!
We voted for George and Laura twice. The chances are pretty good that we will be voting for Hillary twice……”Lord willing….the creeks don’t rise!”
We also did love Ann Margaret……in “Bye Bye Birdie”….too! “Viva Las Vegas” with Elvis too!
I’m not vouching for this information as my own legal advice, but I am passing it what others have collected:
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/01/02/here-are-all-the-rights-you-have-when-interacting-with-a-police-officer/
While browsing across the blogs this morning, I saw on one of the other misguided morasses of misinformation the claim that emanuel patrasco, running for assembly against keith curry and matt harper, was the brains behind the election of travis allen. since this blog seems to be a bit more responsible, and wider read, than the site the story was posted on, i thought that i would try and set the record straight here.
mr. patrasco has spent the last two years taking credit for travis allen’s victory. the fact is that mr. patrasco was late to the party and only gained visibility due to the fact that the individuals responsible for the strategy, and its implementation, walked, after setting the plan in motion, due to their disenchantment with emanuel’s ethical flexibility.
in the beginning, travis wanted to run for city council and sought the counsel of joe carchio and dave garofolo. along with a third individual, someone fairly well connected in orange county politics, he was convinced that there was a plan for him to take the assembly seat, a bigger, better prize. the parties reached out to certain democrats and a plan was developed ensuring travis of doing no worse then second in the primary. After the primary, agreements made pre primary with the democrats were consumated.
at that point, with money secured and long term support confirmed, emanuel was brought in to “manage” a campaign that was already set in stone. finally, the three principals got tired of emanuel’s immaturity, greed, lack of sophistication and all around idiocy and walked.
what was envisioned was realized and travis is in sacramento..
the problem is that people like emanual patrasco, chad morgan, and a few others, do not respect where they came from, how they got where they are and the people who got them there. for all my disagreements with them politically and philosophically, at least people like greg diamond and vern nelson have an inner core of integrity and a sense of humility. unfortunately that is not the case with regard to patrasco, morgan and the people who sponsor them.
republicans, democrats, all the people of orange county need to know that these people, who profess to be the next generation of republican leaders, are being pimped out by the likes of allen mansoor and jennifer beall. the public needs to know just what that that portends.
if you do not believe any part of the travis allen story, ask travis. i do believe that there is still some decency left in the guy and that, ultimately, he will tell the truth.
as for me, i am “pulling out of pittsburgh and rollin down that eastern seaboard”
Hey – I like Petrascu! (sp) But you probably know him better than I… Wait, why is it again that you are commenting anonymously?
And did you just say me and Greg Diamond have “a sense of humility?” Now I KNOW you’re pulling our leg.
Wait – you weren’t the guy behind Travis’ first big attack piece on Troy Edgar, where the fact that some HB politicians were endorsing a politician from outside HB was considered some kind of “Darkness at Noon” type treason? You know I’m no Troy Edgar backer, but THAT was so over the top that it made Travis look deranged. Oh well, maybe that wasn’t you…
Carry on, brother.
I do have a sense of humility, but I usually have to get within a couple of yards of it to be sure that that’s really what it is.
No you don’t, man, and neither do I. Have you forgotten that we head up what is nearly the most venomous, grandiose, and self-important gaggle of ankle-biters Matt Cunningham has yet encountered?
If you ignore the law cause you don’t believe in it, you get to spent some time at the farm.
What do you think?
I was in a doll shop looking at the Barbie doll (Blonde, white, blue eyes) next to the chocolate Barbie (Dark hair, dark eyes, Dark skin) and I asked grand daughter which one was prettier.
I was surprised that young girls of color still see the blond Barbie as the prettier of the two.
From San Clemente Green:
Thank you for signing the petition Tell Edison to put SAFETY over PROFIT. We have now begun a serious discussion with Edison’s Community Engagement Panel. The two actions we are asking them to consider are having independent nuclear experts involved and to take extra precautions in dry cask storage. We are nearly at 1500 signatures, but more would help assure we get what the public wants and deserves to know. Please give us another little boost by sharing this with your friends and family. Every person matters.

New study has shows that even a small amount of recreational use damages the brain.
People with impaired brain function find it difficult to determine right from wrong.
Possibly. Old studies show that alcohol destroys brain cells. I killed a whole bunch of them last night.
Yeah, some mornings I hold a little funeral for ’em…
You know at some point in time, in the future, you may wish that those mass loss of brain cells would be beneficial in your older ages.
I’m kinda joking, being the “vern Nelson” caricature… in actuality I haven’t drunk in many months.
HA! 🙂
Another Marijuana related death to ignore.
“Authorities say a Wyoming college student who jumped to his death from a Denver hotel balcony ate more than the recommended serving of a marijuana cookie.”…. “An autopsy report from the March 11 incident lists marijuana intoxication as a significant contributing factor in the death.”
“Pongi’s friends tried to restrain him before he left the room and jumped to his death, police said.
One of his friends told investigators it may have been his first time using the drug — the only one toxicology tests found in his system. All three friends said they did not purchase or take any other drugs during their stay. “
