Former Costa Mesa Mayor Sandy Genis is definitely one of a kind. A no dummy, Stanford University grad, that goes her own way in everything is heading back to the grind of City business for her home town of Costa Mesa, California. It won’t be easy….City Politics never are, and in this case she has some Bever, Monahan, Righeimer cabal issues to deal with. Sandy does has one pal on the council and that is “Boy Club Pariah” – Wendy Leece”, who also has a proclivity to “go her own way”!
Genis steps into what we might assess: to fill the shoes of missing former Council member Katrina Foley, also – another independent thinking soul. Katrina is so independent that after Costa Mesa City Council she ran for Newport-Mesa School Board – served a couple of years and resigned because she thought the whole process was too slow and too hopeless to be of value. Sandy Genis brings a broad reach of intelligence and understanding to the process. Not only did Sandy serve from 1988 to 1996 on the Costa Mesa City Council, including two years as Mayor – but before that she spent many years in the Newport Beach Planning Department. Today Mayor Genis is a Independent Governmental Consultant on a variety of issues. Since her departure from City governance – she has not let any grass grow. On local issues “The Mayor” has been a constant critic of the sale of the OC Fair Grounds, by the State of California – under what she calls – the wrong conditions.
Sandy Genis will be a great City Council Member and Mayor ….again! Sandy was and is a founding member of Cutting Edge – a talk show from back in 2000. www.cuttingedge-atalkshow.com We certainly wish her well in November! Ding Hao – Mayor Genis! Ding Hao!
There is little doubt that in any debates that the Mayor may present herself to: in the words of G. Gordon Liddy: “Sir, in a war of wits….you are totally disarmed against me!”
There are many Cutting Edge issues at play in Costa Mesa which need to be addressed and resolved, among them: Outsourcing of Public Jobs, Pensions, the proposed Charter Amendment, West Costa Mesa, Banning Ranch and many more. We can think of no one more qualified to deal with these issues than Sandy Genis. Good Luck Madam Mayor, we are so glad your are throwing your best Purse and Prada Shoes into this race!
You make her sound great, but — what exactly was her role as a founding member of Cutting Edge? I’d need to know!
She IS great. Corrupt politicians, corrupt bureaucrats, tremble when they see her approach the lectern. She goes through dry EIR reports like a bunny through a carrot field and uncovers exactly whatever they were hoping she wouldn’t uncover.
Oh, I added the pen name “La Femme Wonkita” to the title because that’s what she likes to call herself, and she did write a few posts here under that name: http://www.orangejuiceblog.com/author/la-femme-wonkita/ – My most invaluable colleague in fighting the Great Fairgrounds Swindle!
So that’s Sandy Genis, John Stephens, and Sue Lester that people whom I respect are supporting so far. Are there two seats open or three?
I think that the Charter proposal just croaked. Riggy & Co.’s shenanigans have awakened the beast of responsible government — and it is hungry for sanity.
Checked with the excellent Bubbling Cauldron (the RSS feed for which is in our rightmost column) and — three seats open. In fact, I’ll quote Geoff West’s list of candidates to induce people to go there for more good analysis:
My reaction? More than three opposing candidates favors the incumbents, who will be on a coherent slate. Whoever the three weakest candidates on that list are might want to consider not running so as not to split the anti-Riggy Party vote. Just saying.
I hope that’s it, I like all three. Some folks are all “eh, Sue Lester, Marijuana, eh…” But we here know that she is about a lot more than that, and would be a great and caring councilperson.
And all three of these good candidates are Republicans, believe it or not!
Greg, you may be correct. A packed ballot will almost guarantee the slate of Mensinger, Monahan and McCarthy will prevail in November. Each opposing candidate needs to look within theirselves to determine whether their campaign will help or hinder this opportunity to shift the power on the dais. We’ll see.
The three stooges will likely be joined on slate mailers with Mansoor (vs. Bob Rush for Assembly), Rhorabacher, Jim Righeimer’s Charter scheme (which includes the “son of Paycheck Protection” that Righeimer has been touting since it went down in flames decades ago) plus the statewide GOP similar scheme. They will pool their resources and spend like drunken sailors to carry the day. It’s gonna be messy, for sure.
*The end of the world is NOT coming in November folks. You will be justly surprised that money and stupidity cannot buy every election. We know this comes as a huge shock to your traditional beliefs…..that ANYONE can be bought…..but luckily…this is still America and there is still HOPE.
Dr. D., Righeimer was also a founding member of the Cutting Edge….but never came to the party in any major way. But then we didn’t ask, so we can’t completely fault him. We have supported Jim in the passed. His story of personal tragic history….played a big part in that as well. He is married to a lovely lady as well.
If you wanted to know what participation Mayor Genis has played on the Cutting Edge, please be our guest and watch the John Moorlach interview in 2000 or perhaps an “ON TARGET” Episode 3 or 4 as starters. She goes her own way in all cases and accounts for herself professionally and honetly.
Our good bud – Jeff West….seems to be on the wrong side of this issue too. Starting
to lose confidence that Dr. West is as Independent, as he might be. but hey, it is only politics….nothing personal. As you can guess – WE fully support Mayor Genis and would encourage our brothers and sisters in Costa Mesa to do the same!
Ron, the name is Geoff West, thank you very much. I’m NOT an independent – I’m a lifelong Republican and very angry at what Scott Baugh and his minions are trying to do to the city I’ve called home for 39 years! We now have 9 candidates theoretically running for 3 council seats. I’ll vote for three of them, none of which have a surname beginning with an “M”.
*Geoff……you can’t have it both ways. You spin the mega slate concept that is unbeatable and then turn around and say you hate it. Pragmatic realism? Not much.
Monahan is damaged goods. The other three frontrunners are unknown as electeds.
Sandy is steady….and been there and done that. Hey, time will tell…..we picked the
American League over the National League – All Star Game….so we aren’t exactly
bullet proof pronosticators. Let’s just say that we have been very pleased with how
the folks in Costa Mesa have responded over the years. Together, we held back the widening of 17th Street and the takeover of Wal-mart. We also save the Omelette
Parlor for a few years…..which was just a pure together consumer issue.
Sounds like an interesting election. Genis is not at all impressive. I have seen her here in HB at council meetings and I watch CM council on TV. She has a weird cadence and voice when she speaks and is on the wrong side of the public employee outsourcing/pension issue. She thinks she sees corruption everywhere she has a disagreement with someone yet nothing ever comes of her fantasies. Unions will spend like drunken sailors on her so she has a chance but she has lost her last two runs for office. Public sentiment against unions everywhere. Sandy is a few years late, Laches.
deadwhitemale – dude, you are living in the 19th century. It’s OK……first off…guess you didn’t graduate from Stanford. 2ndly, guess you are hoping your paid off boys will carry the day. Call our good pal Geoff……and talk it up. Maybe you can convince the rest of the people in Costa Mesa….that your tripe is good in your menudo!
Nope, not Stanford but close by. Dated Stanford chicks but were not too exciting. Golden Bear girls were better. Who is Geoff? Why should I call him?
Uh, “Geoff” is the guy whose copyright was violated by the use of the photo of Genis above. Ron assumes he knows which way I’m leaning in this election. Well, I just told him, and you, that I won’t be voting for anyone with an “M” starting his surname. Beyond that, I’ve got an open mind until we begin to vet these candidates through the three (so far) forums scheduled between August and October. It’s going to be an interesting race, with the Charter, Mansoor vs. Bob Rush for Assembly and the OC GOP-anointed slate of Mensinger, Monahan and McCarthy competing with six (so far) others for the three council seats up for grabs.
You copyrighted that pic of La Wonkita, Geoff? I didn’t know, my bad. I’ve used it every time we write about her, and I’m the one who illustrates the posts of oldtimers like the Winnies who don’t know how to do it themselves. Want me to put credit on it?
I can make a derivative work of it if you’d like, Vern. You know: render it in pastels, give her dragon’s wings, that sort of thing. Or Geoff can just say that for a simply illustrative photo of a person not involved in a related non-news event that is used for identification purposes only, it falls under “fair use” exceptions. (He does earn a photo credit, though!)
no, we’re good. It’s one of my favs…
deadwhitrmale – Oooh my…..A Goldfish Bear….like our good friend..did you attend Boalt Hall by chance? Tedford is a dupe! Sad for your Navy Colors……almost as
bad as those awful Oregon teams. Since we represent the Figueroa Car Dealers, Restaurant and Bar Association…. Barkley and Kiffin…..are our principals…..and we love it. We always have supported the Stanford Indians…..not Tarheels or Cards…
We have always loved their Pep Band…..great uniforms!
Anyway, back to dear “Geoff” the Copyright King! There was a great 50’s movie called “Friendly Persuasion” with Gary Cooper and Anthony Perkins that kind of reminds us of…of the sequel: “Geoff makes a decision!” After it was all over….we
still don’t know where they stood or where Geoff stands. Come on now Geoff…..
you don’t have to sugar coat it. How old will you have to be to finally – step right up
and say what is on your mind? Meanwhile, as part of the “greater blogging community”, we would hope that you would merely ask Chairman Vern….to give you
a photo credit on the Mayor’s photo and call it a day.
Geoff’s position seems clear: he’s not voting for the Righeimer Party, he wants to look more closely at the other six candidates over time before making up his mind, and like me he hopes that the opposition eventually coalesces around three major opponents, whoever they are. Right, Geoff?
Chatter about a return of Katrina now? That would be big … Katrina, Sandy, and that lawyer guy.
I’ve heard that Katrina’s not going to run, but that’s from a week or so back.
You got it, Greg. My “old” buddy, Ronaldo, just can’t stand it! 😉
*We love Katrina….very much. She has it togehter and if Sandy could bend a little…
a super team…to be sure. They could call it “The Non-Housewives of Costa Mesa”.
Reality TV – here we come!
Meanwhile, Chairman Vern – you don’t have to be “The Potscrubbers” mouth piece
do you? He is quite capable of speaking for himself. There have been times when
we had coffee that he was downright “spewing”! Geoff doesn’t deal in suppositions
much…unless of course…he is doing the supposing.
*See, we knew the “Potscrubber” wouldn’t be able to stand it….for very long. Good to see your are back to your “old” self Geoffrey! “Do you believe in miracles?” Well,
you just never know…do you?
Can’t figure out what you guys problem is with Geoff. It’s not making sense. Behave now.
*Chairman Vern….Politics! The answers are always the same…..a difference of opinion
on the issues or the candidates…….no other problems at all. Makes for a sparkling discussion group….no biggie!
