Landing in jail during vacation is not my idea of a good time. Beating your mentally disabled son and then telling police you don’t think its a crime makes me quickly lose sympathy for the accused. 54 year old Wyoming State Senator Bob Nicholas (R) was arrested In Boca Grande Florida earlier this week after he was seen “removing” his mentally disabled son from a restaraunt and then allegedly beat the 19 year old with closed fists, kicked him to the ground where he allegedly stomped on the poor boy five or six times. http://www.wyomingnews.com/articles/2011/12/03/news/20local_12-03-11.txt
Someone watching the incident from inside the restaurant called the police who showed up at the elected officials hotel room about two hours later.A sergeant reported a small blood stain on a bedspread in the room and observed that the victim had redness and welts on his neck and a foot-sized abrasion to the skin around his left ribcage that appeared to have a shoelace pattern to it, the report says. Nicholas was placed under arrest and transported to the Lee County Jail without incident. He was released Nov. 24 on a $20,000 bond. Abuse of an elderly or disabled adult is a third-degree felony in Florida, and it carries a prison sentence of up to five years. According to the Lee County Clerk’s Office, Nicholas is set for an arraignment on Dec. 27.
The truly sad part of the story was the statements of senator Nicholas which sounded a bit too much like Detroit Lion Ndamukong Suh in that neither understood that stomping the crap out of someone is just not right. This is an instance of perception and reality being two very different things,” he said. Nicholas’ son suffers from seizures and has a mental condition similar to autism, the report indicates.
Nicholas said his son became disruptive and combative during lunch. He said he was only trying to get his son out of the restaurant, and he described his response as “corporal punishment,” according to the sheriff’s report.
“Patrons at the restaurant obviously felt that I was being too physical with him and called law enforcement,” he said Friday. “Not knowing the circumstances, I may have done the same thing.” Nicholas added that his son was “not harmed” after the altercation. His son was playing basketball shortly after with his cousins, he said. Nicholas added that he fully cooperated with the investigation and will continue to do so. “I accept I will have to explain my actions,” he said. “And if I was too strong with my son, I will address that as well.”
Uhm, corporal punishment is giving your three year old a smack on the behind to get him to stop throwing a tantrum, it is not punching and kicking your mentally disabled adult son until he is bruised and bleeding. I wonder how many injuries Nicholas would have had to inflict on his some before he considered him “harmed?” While Nicholas claims that he was trying to get his disruptive son out of the restaurant, the witness claims were all about the beating that allegedly took place outside of the restaurant.
Even more troubling is that Nicholas has this attitude while taking a position of leadership and supervision over disabled kids. The biography he provided for his last campaign listed that he has served for more than 10 years as a board member on the Caring for Children Foundation and is a Special Olympics coach. Not sure that I would want Senator Nicholas coaching disabled kids.
this man should not have custody of this young man and deserves corporal punishment himself, he belongs in jail can you imagine what this young man must have endured through his lifetime! thank you for writing this!
At a minimum, this father needs some serious anger management and parenting classes, and at the same time needs to face the legal consequences for his abusive and violent actions.
Also his relationship with his 19 year-old mentally disabled son needs to be closely monitored for the well-being of his son.
Yeah. The dad deserves an ass whipping worse than what he inflicted and loss of his position as senator. I would happily kick his sorry white ass and then torture him til he begs for death. Then again I believe most politicians should be done the same way. They are fucking this country up so bad, I support a death penalty on these maggot leeches in office. Good riddance……….
Is that a standard procedure for how to treat a disabled person in the great State of Why-O-Mean
Is it PHIL or BOB NICHOLAS? there is a listing for a Phil….in wyoming state senate,,and they both wear shit eating grinns??? so is it the same dude that kicked that retarded boy,,,you should be ashamed
Phil and Bob are evidently the same guy – not sure how you get the nickname Bob, but I have confirmed same guy.
I’m shocked he didn’t do what so many other politicians do and say “it was all a misunderstanding”.
Or “I’m resigning to spend more time beating my family.”
I know that this may sound biased, but with this one Vern wins the thread.
He actually did kind of do that. In his statement to police he said that the witnesses “didn’t understand what they were seeing.” Sounded a lot like the Suh saying “What, stomping the crap out of someone is wrong?”
I actually got some satisfaction out of Suh’s act. I’ve been wanting to stomp the crap out of those annoying Green Bay Packers fans for years. Most self absorbed and intellectually deficient people I have ever met.
Today’s pro football players are a bunch of pampered babies. Somebody punched me or stepped on my pinky finger. Boo fucking hoo. Want a real football player? Give me tough players like Chuck Bednarik and Conrad Dobler any day.
As far as this scumbag goes, he beat a kid and deserves to get the Suh treatment or an ass whooping by Chuck Bednarik. At least Suh did his act on the gridiron and inflicted his act upon another adult.
This further confirms my belief: ALL elected officials should serve two terms. One in office and one in jail…….
This guy is dirt for doing that to a kid. In Suh’s case, he stomped a member of the Green Bay Packers who was an adult that probably was doing something dirty to him during that portion of the game. Unlike some, I actually understand the survivalist instincts that kick in while playing football.
I hate to say this but he won’t get in any trouble. He will buy his way out and not see a day in jail.

My wife and I lost our oldest daughter,at the young age of 23. She had mental problems, that required her to live in a medical group home. She was found dead in her room,in 2001. The owners of the group home, were so very sorry, that she had fallen down, hitting her head, crushing her skull!!! A friend of ours,is an M.D.,she was also a medical examiner…After we received the police reports, and Medical reports our friend studied them, and reporting that our daughter was murdered…To our dismay,no one was charged with the crime….A shattering of our life ,that we will never forget…I read about this upstanding senator abusing his son,Please tell me how I can meet him in person, for about 10 minutes. I will assure youu, he will never do this again…
