Federal District Judge David O. Carter of Santa Ana: " 'Childish conduct by both parties,' he judged."
We aren’t going to dwell on this development — we’re not unfeeling monsters, after all — but given its role in the history of the relevant events The Orange Juice Blog really ought to mark a significant event in the blog wars in our fair county. Andrew Galvin has the story out at the Irvine, Long Beach, Huntington Beach and Brea Register — and that’s all this correspondent plans to say about it for today. (Of course, as I write, “today” ends in two minutes.)
Be as nice about this in the comments as you can, folks. We wish we could set the bar higher than that, but we have come to know you all pretty well by now. Do what you believe you must.
About Greg Diamond
Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that.
Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too.
He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.)
His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
Well, I for one find this news sad, although I think Art brings this stuff on himself.
He just can’t disagree with someone without demonizing them. He is his own worst enemy.
Just imagine if the judgement had gone the other way, Art would’ve been crowing and rubbing the result in Dan’s face for years, let’s hope Dan shows more restraint.
As the judge noted, there was plenty of childish behavior on both sides. But surpassing Art in “rub it in your face” skills would be a formidable challenge indeed.
The first time I ever read or heard the word “hater” was in a Pedroza post on this blog. Over time I saw that he used that word frequently, especially when discussing the strong feelngs that exist in our community about various issues related to immigration. When I read about the lawsuit and what was allegedly done to re-route people attempting to visit certain web sites I could not help but think that if he indeed did this, he himself was acting like a hater. He obviously has blogging and technological talent, and organizational skills too, but tarnished it all by getting involved in a rather childish game of dirty tricks wtih consequences beyond just him. Sad situation.
Douchebags being douchebags.
I am only sorry that Vern has been caught up in all of this nonsense.
Soon I’ll be free to say what I really think about all of this nonsense.
Can’t really comment on the case, but can tell you that Judge Dave Carter is one of the best judges imaginable. A straight shooter who is highly regarded by many.
Except the Birthers, except the Birthers!
I was researching him a little a few months ago… they were really hoping (somehow because he’s a decorated military hero) that he would totally rule in their favor that Barack Obama is a Kenyan usurper to the presidency… and then when he laughed them out of court he became the biggest sellout Judas on the bench. In Birther lore.
Absolutely. I had a friend who clerked for him and sang his praises to the heavens.
I believe he is a Democrat, which might help explain any “philosophical differences” with those on the right.
Actually, I would hope one doesn’t have to be a Democrat to accept the simple fact that Barack Obama is an American citizen, born in Hawaii, and our legitimate President.
I affiliate with no political party and have often wondered at times if George W. Bush and his aiding and abeting cronies were even born on this planet, much less the USA.
Vern – Add the words “for the time being” to your sentence and you have a more complete sentence!
Ah – you’re betting on Romney or Gingrich? I had thought you were one of our smarter commenters. I had thought you’d been around a while.
No betting here. Just that the way I read the tea leaves currently almost anyone other than Obama would get the majority of votes if the election was today. Things can change between now and the election, of course, but right now all indications are that he is a one-termer. Actually, one of the best things that has happened to him in his term is the current crop of Repub. candidates taking shots at each other – when they are not busy shooting themselves in their own foot that is. Thte whose scene on both sides of the aisle is pretty much a train wreck.
Willard Mitt Romney sure ain’t gonna fire up the Tea Party base. And all the other guys are gonna scare the crap out of independents. Doesn’t matter if they attack each other or not.
Given that we’ve gone way off topic already, I’m interested in assessing people’s interest in newly declared Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson’s candidacy.
Well, he’s polling at less than 1%.
About the same chance as me dating Jennifer Aniston.
Put Jesse Ventura on the ticket with him and that should really kill his run.
From what I understand, he pulls enough from any Republican to give it to Obama.
Here’s a candidate for Guy Fawkes to get behind! Pro-marijuana, pro-gay marriage. (How is he on foreign policy?)
I was going to request a GOP ballot just to vote for Gary Johnson before he bolted for the Libertarian Party. Gary is a decent guy who has been given the heave ho from the party’s establishment because of his pro-legalization stance. He did oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and is no fan of the current systems of military tribunals and torture. I do like Ron Paul, but there is that whole cult figure thing about him that makes me skeptical. Just like I was skeptical about the hype behind Obama in 2008. Which is why I will never vote for any Democrat or Republican.
I did volunteer work for Jesse Ventura’s campaign for Minnesota governor in 1998 when I lived in Minneapolis. I thought he had no chance of winning but there were three issues that he supported where he won my support.
1) Repealing the ban on the sale of fireworks in the state of Minnesota
2) Abolishing the requirement for emissions testing of motor vehicles in Minnesota. Minnesota already had some stringent environmental standards which made emissions testing totally unnecessary.
3) His support for conceal and carry permits of firearms. Yes, I’m a self defense fanatic and don’t trust cops.
I lived in Minnesota during his tenure as governor. Jesse was the last politician I had any real enthusiasm for when it came time to cast a vote. Probably the best governor that state has had in the last 20 years. Under his watch and leadership, the state had a budget surplus. Under the leadership of Pawlenty and Dayton, not so much. $5 billion in the red and counting.
I’m glad that you found your candidate. As I recall from friends in New Mexico, he’s against child labor laws, so that’s a deal-killer for me, but if I had your views I’d probably want to be his state coordinator.
Oh I’m sure you can find a prospect among the Regulate Marijuana Like Wine volunteers. I have not worked on a political candidate’s campaign since Jesse Ventura in 1998 and I’m not going to break my streak now. I prefer to work on initiative campaigns instead. Much less stressful and less egos to deal with. Besides, I like comparing candidates’ vote totals to Prop 19 in 2010 and pointing out the fact that a plant got more votes than them while cackling with laughter. How do you like that Yunus Aksoy? The Irvine city council candidate that accused Prop 19 volunteers of stealing his signs.
Now that Dr. No is running for Supreme Commandante of MasterPlannedistan, I am considering circulating signatures or paying the necessary fee to get a sock puppet to run.
Speaking of initiative campaigns, you might want to know that the Lyndon LaRouche people are hanging out in front of banks and storefronts claiming to be part of Occupy OC.
“You might want to know that the Lyndon LaRouche people are hanging out in front of banks and storefronts claiming to be part of Occupy OC.”
Ugh — really? Where?
Yeah, I told Guy we would do a post about that … but I’m swamped, working on three or four things. Guy said it was down in Laguna something.
Guy, if you could do a short piece about what happened, along with a couple paragraphs about what dirtbag maniacs LaRouche and his followers are, … I’ll owe you one!
One thing I do agree with them on though: Restore Glass-Steagall!
The LaRoachites were in front of the Bank of America on El Toro Road in Lake Forest (the one near the 99 Cent Store). Smack dab in front of the ATM. I wish my new Android dumbphone’s battery was charged up so I could have gotten pictures. I spent about three minutes talking to one of them who said he was with the Occupy movement only to see brochures for LaRoach PAC. Something about ol’ Lyndon being a political prisoner. I asked them if they felt the same way about Leonard Peltier and all I got was a dumb look. I left before the conversation turned to chem-trails which is usually a much more entertaining and hilarious conversation.
The picture of Obama with a Hitler moustache really attracted a lot of curious people. I’ll write more later on this after the Eagles-Cowboys game.
Johnson doesn’t seem to be bought and paid for by the usual suspects, which I think limits his ability to get elected. That goes back to my belief that we need to get big money out of our elections, so that people who are truly independent have a chance.
He is pro-choice which is a plus in my book, but his open border ideas bother me.
As I understand his position on gun laws, he wants to get rid of them. Being a gun owner, I support laws that do restrict ownership, but I’m not sure how unrestricted he wants to be.
Out of Iraq (we’re still there) and Afghanistan is certainly a popular position, and gets my support.
Legalization for MJ I’m obviously in favor of.
I don’t get why he went in as a Republican…..he seems more of a Democrat.
OH, oh , oh…..one other thing. He doesn’t even pretend to go to church. Love it!
Well, of course he’s not going to get elected. But he does throw the election to Obama.
Ron Paul types should go for him. I’m almost tempted to vote for him myself, since California isn’t in play. He’s like Ron Paul without the racist newsletter problem. Oh – and pro-choice, which Ron is not.
Don’t promote that sort of alternative for people Vern.
Remember Nader in 2000 ?
The thought of a GOP clown running the circus is unpleasant.
Well… I wouldn’t promote it too much. But polls at the moment show that Gary takes from the Republican side, not the Obama side.
And maybe even adds to the pool of Americans who actually feel there’s someone worth voting for.
Well he does offer an appealing alternative…though not electable without the deep pocket money.
GF is right about the LaRouche bags …had a “conversation” with one in front of Mother’s.
Told him it was despicable to be lying and scaring old people so close to the holidays.
