In one of the great moments of my legal career I was sitting in a deposition with a Hollywood Celebrity who was suing a “women’s” magazine for photo shopping his face onto someone else’s body. When the celeb was handed the photo supposedly of himself in the buff he said, “I have spent many pleasurable hours with my member and I can tell you without hesitation that IS NOT MY WIENER.” We all believed him.
So last week when liberal bombastic Congressman Anthony Weiner was asked whether the photo of the small but excited member hidden behind briefs was his and he “said, I can’t tell for sure,” I laughed out loud. I am pretty sure that I remember all of the pictures of me taken in my underpants – the last one when I was about 3. This is one of those occasions when I am going to allow myself to enjoy a giggle or two. Weiner has made a name for himself by shouting down the opposition. There is a ton of tape out there with the New York Congressman literally dousing any attempts for those that disagree with him to be heard by using full volume of his annoyingly screechy voice to block their words from being heard. Weiner was viewed as a rising liberal star – a smart cookie – evidently he is book smart, not street smart.
Unfortunately for Weiner he is old friends with political satirist Jon Stewart. While Stewart was a bit restrained early in the scandal he could no longer hold back when Weiner declared that he was going to launch an investigation into the identity of the penis:
“An investigation?” Stewart asked, sounding incredulous. “You know, I’m no big city detective, but why don’t you just check inside your pants? … Seriously? An investigation? Your penis didn’t rob the Bellagio.”
What troubles me as much as the continued lies of Weiner is the comments coming from the media. When asked why Weiner was not being taken to task in the same way that Republican Congressman are held accountable, several members of the media replied “Weiner never held himself out as having high morals.” Really? We are going to accept an elected official placing the bar on the ground and watching as he trips over it? I understand the greater irony and hypocricy of someone casting himself as being morally superior being caught violating there own principles, but I would think we would hold ALL elected officials to a standard of moral responsibility that would included telling the truth.
Can you complete your question which is now phrased “why Weiner was not being taken to task in the same way that Republican Congressman,” because I believe I can answer it better. Are we talking about Chris Lee? Mark Foley? Larry Craig? John Ensign? Mark Vitter? Mark Sanford? Because they’re all really pretty different from each other.
I’m embarrassed that one of my favorite Congressmen spent a week lying about this, although it’s understandable. But these are PG-rated photos tweeted to adult female friends. Apart from the lying, it’s only his wife Huma who should be pissed off.
So, just so we’re clear – his consituents don’t have a right to be pissed because he lied to them, Andrew Breitbart (one of your favorites) doesn’t have a right to be pissed though he was accused of being involved in the “hacking” of Weiner’s account while Weiner knew the truth all along, the American public doesn’t have the right to be pissed because the smug Mr. Weiner went on his fake PR tour, lying to all and insulting our intelligence? I agree his poor wife should exact whatever measure of punishment she feels fit, but I wonder if you would be saying the same thing if it were a Republican. I know you took your shots at Lee, and probably most of the others. So what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander?
I made fun of Lee. If you want to bring up each of the others that will be fun. All of us were puzzled about why Lee would quit so abruptly after a photo that was just as innocent as Weiner’s. It turned out the reason he quit was because he knew people would eventually find out he was looking for transsexuals. To me this was funny. I never said he should resign or be punished. I did have fun writing about it here.

Plus, OF COURSE, as is the case with just about all these Republicans, they had anti-gay voting records, and used “family values” to get elected. I take exception to Geoff re-phrasing THAT as “having high morals.”

You also forgot to mention that those Republican officials are the one’s that want to regulate the morality of the nation, allign themselves with Christian extremists and constantly preach family values. Their voting records also demonstrate this.

My outrage is not so much about the behavior/action, as much as it is about the hypocrisy. These Republicans preach morality out one side of their mouth while they are doing something quite different with the other side.
I am disappointed in Weiner lying but he isn’t preaching “family values” while acting inappropriately.

1. I’ve never called for anyone to “step down” because of a sexual indiscretion;
2. Edwards is in a world of legal shit right now; Spitzer had to leave office; don’t know who Berger is; Marion Berry went to f-n jail; Clinton got impeached; Rangel got censured by his fellow Democrats. etc etc… and Weiner’s gonna get investigated.
3. You want to see impunity, look at David Vitter. Or Arnold Schwarzenegger. (and until just recently, John Ensign.)

This guy, however, kept digging his hole deeper and deeper and deeper for a week. He said he had been hacked. He blamed others. He said he hired lawyers to find out what happened. he said a whole lot of stuff that was absolutely false.
Instead of looking at these people from afar and saying they should simply be forgiven, just think if he did something to you that hurt you badly and then he LIED about it? Why shouldn’t we, the people, feel the same way his poor wife feels at this time? His parents and siblings and close friends? How do you think all of them feel?
It is easy to say FORGIVE but for some reason, I think most people probably don’t totally forgive somebody if they personally hurt them–even most of those who say to just forgive.
Bottom line: He can never, ever be trusted again in public office. He flat-out lied to the public. Ditto for John Edwards. The same for Arnold. Hell, the same for anybody.
Erase him. Period. Make him quit, go away gby and take one for the team. He et him out of the picture.
