Cheryl Brothers (R) has had an interesting run as a public official. She’s been elected twice as a Councilwoman for the City of Fountain Valley, she’s sat on most of the boards the County of Orange has to offer (except for the Cemetery one, she humorously points out), and she has somehow invoked the unflinching wrath of Matthew Cunningham, Red County Editor and principal of Pacific Strategies, his P.R. firm.
Cheryl has “no idea” why Cunningham would refer to her as being unknown or disliked by the ISDOC* members, “I’ve already been endorsed by five Special Districts, unanimously I might add, and I have the support of several others”** she said. “I also might add that I’ve haven’t seen Charlie Wilson at any of the meetings.” By ‘the meetings’ Cheryl is referring to the special district meets she’s attended to secure support from.
Although, she contends, Cunningham might be trying to cast her as an outsider “Because I hear he’s on retainer for the Irvine Water District” (which is thought to have it’s hands in much of county business), and “his wife is a Bill Campbell appointee, and Campbell is supporting my opponent, Charlie Wilson”.
Previous to my conversation with Ex-Councilwoman Brothers, I had already looked into this and found that she’s been on this ISDOC board since 2008. Did this clearly outspoken Public Official decide not to meet anyone or speak during her two-year tenure? It struck me as odd, to say the least, that Cunningham would state exactly that.
In any case, Brothers has been involved in the public sphere since 1987. A simple Google search turns up the years of work she’s done, you can read the interviews I found here, and here, and you can check out her profile that’s used by ISDOC, you know, the Commission she was on for two years but according to Matthew Cunningham, doesn’t know or like her, here.
So what can you do to help her and upset Matthew? Nothing really – only ISDOC members can vote in this election. Clearly, Matthew think members read his blogs, or at the very least he hopes they do, and wanted to take a swipe at the Ex-Councilwoman while he was at it, by stating quite clearly on his piece’s title that she “May Seek Public Life After Defeat In LAFCO Bid”***. So, now, Cunningham contends that Brothers will lose the election that has yet to take place, and that she plans on re-capturing her lost City Council seat.
He’s become quite the Seer! I asked Brothers if she’s planning on running again. “I haven’t really thought about that yet,” she stated tersely. Someone should tell her Cunningham has his crystal ball on her tight, because he clearly knows things she doesn’t, years ahead of time!
I have no horse in this race, other than the fair and accurate portrayal of someone who I feel is being unfairly maligned. I wonder if Cunningham can make a reciprocal statement?
*What is ISDOC? Independent Special District of Orange County. Comprised of Park, Library, Water districts, etc.
**Voting members of the ISDOC consist of county agencies, who vote on issues as a unit.
***What is LAFCO? The Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) is a state mandated agency that oversees the boundary changes (i.e. annexation, detachment) to cities and special districts. The Orange LAFCO Board consists of seven voting members: 2 from the Board of Supervisors, 2 representing cities, 2 representing special districts and 1 representing the public.

Cheryl Brothers is a class act. She deserves kudos for her public service.
Cunningham wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about this except that someone is pulling his string. And that someone is very likely Campbell – or some other RINO act.
Good to hear he’s got himself another government job, though.
Yeah we miss Cheryl here in Fountain Valley. She and Gus Ayer were the two voices of sanity on the council, now they’re both gone.
Jubal may still hate her for voting against putting up “In God We Trust” on Fountain Valley’s council chambers. She is a common-sense conservative and public servant who takes the Constitution seriously.
Brothers lost for a reason, and she got beat by one better candidate who does care about the city and one well funded newbie who knew how to campaign (she stinks at it and arrogantly thought she couldn’t be beat). She’s more disliked than liked, especially for her elitist attitude. She reminds you of the worst grade school teacher you ever had.
Her obsession with the Board memberships is classic ego-gratification and greed for whatever bucks most of these overly-compensated positions bring. But Cheryl knows better than anyone else (just ask her), so of course she’s needed (just ask her again).
And ask her why she was the only Councilmember who opposed the new Vietnamese performing arts operation that took over the old Edwards theater at Brookhurst and Edinger to bring in some local business, taxes and make use of an otherwise worthless structure. Too noisy? Too much parking impact? No, she also lives across the street.
You’re washed up, Cheryl. Retire and go away.
Excellent job contradicting every lie out of Cunningham’s mouth. Once again, glad to see we don’t have a measly mouthed democrat here!
All you have to do is bring up the fact that Jerbal committed an unforgivable sin by leaking the names of minor sex abuse victims on his blog. He has absolutely no credibility and is a complete embarassment to his party. I take anything that comes out of his mouth as seriously as I do a Bugs Bunny cartoon.
There’s no need to bring Mr. Bunny into this. Also, come on, the leaking is old news, and the dude apologized, stop toot-ing Gustavo Arellano’s horn. The point of this post is that he’s shilling and not disclosing, and tearing down a nice lady-of-a-certain-age while he does it. Shameful!
“The leaking is old news”
WTF??
The “dude” marched in a parade (figure of speech) defending THE WORST HUMAN BEINGS! Child Rapists.
When did it become ok to sell out your kids orifice’s so that your own could get free tuition???
I guess what Randy Kraft or Richard Allen Davis is old news too??
Matt is a sell out. Plan and simple, an “I’m truly sorry” doesn’t cut it. Did it yesterday for the kid that killed the drunk Angels Pitcher??????
stop toot-ing Gustavo Arellano’s horn
I get it now, you’re obsessed with Gustavo. When me or Gabriel or Art fight for the Dream Act, we’re tooting Gustavo’s horn. When Guy Fawkes or dkmfan or kenlaysnotdead bring up that shameful incident in Jubal’s career, they’re just tooting Gustavo’s horn as well. Gustavo’s got nothing to do with it, these are just things that progressives and other people of good will feel strongly about. Get off the Gustavo obsession.
Steve: So you think it’s okay to out sex-abuse victims? You think those victims should get over that calamity? Another great flash of progressive thought there, and the same train of thought the Liberal OC guys believe! Get over the fact that I think you’re a hack-in-training for the OC Dems, and move on with your life. This was a good post — and then your true self came whining out.
Don’t be ridiculous if you can help it Gustavo. This post has nothing to do about the scandal that engrossed you, Cunningham, and the victims of that tragedy, which is why I responded to Guy Fawkes about using your much over-used talking points. I see said talking points about Cunningham pop up every time a controversy surrounds him, and in the end it only serves to mitigate the effect of the current controversy should have on him and his professional work. You come out on top because your seen as providing most of the heat on him for outing those victims, so you don’t mind too much that it crops back up all the time. I think, the victims he outed would much rather prefer that they didn’t come up every time Cunningham is mentioned. I can only guess that they’d prefer everyone move on.
So, since your so clearly driven to do right by them, it clearly follows that you’d stop pontificating at their expense. But I won’t be holding my breath, because I know what an opportunist you are.
A better question is why LAFCO is staffed with freaking idiots and a clueless board.
LAFCO is a bigger joke than Cheryl Brothers. Look at the bait ‘n switch they just let happen to Sunset Beach. After letting a nice little community get sucked into the corrupt political maw of HB (and God forbid, the executive leadership of a turd like Joe Carchio), they find out their taxes are suddenly going up.
I understand they’re planning a suit — good for them, but if they have to pay the legal costs, they oughta come out of Moorlach’s salary for his supporting this bad deal.
Sounds like Brothers would serve to un-idiot this board just a little bit.
