I have been around the OC for a long time and my kids will tell you that I am old. I went to Knott’s Berry Farm when there was no admission charge and the few rides that they had cost a quarter. There was no freeway to drive from Orange County to Mt. Baldy. My five mile run to my Northern Orange County high school went through farms and horse ranches and nothing else. There were virtually no liberals. My how times have changed, and not always for the better.
Orange County used to be a solid block of Republican votes that would go a long way to diffusing the liberal votes of our more congested counterparts in Los Angeles and Orange County. While most of the rest of the state races to the edge of the cliff of liberalism like so many lemmings bent on their own destruction in the name of conformity, Orange County still remains more balanced, more rational. However, the conservative culture in Orange County is a bit faded and battered from its peak during the Halcyon days of my youth.
The various tea parties throughout the County are doing a lot to breathe new life into the Grand Old Party. Yearning for a restoration of the concepts of “less is more” (specifically in terms of our government), the tea parties have rejected the big spending deficit creating politics of BOTH parties. The message of less spending and less government intervention in all of our lives was sent loud and clear throughout the country, though it was muted in California which is teetering on the edge of that tipping point when the number of those solely supported by the government (through government jobs or sole government subsidies and support) exceeds the number of folks supporting themselves through private enterprise. God help us if we ever cross that threshold.
In the coming weeks I plan to point out “fun facts” about abuse of power in many of our Orange County cities. In addition, I plan to spend time with you discussing the impacts of lobbying on candidate selection, global warming and the myth of “green,” the emergence of racism in politics in Orange County, the liberal control of press, academia, the government and the failures of both parties in this state to be real leaders. I don’t really care if you agree with me, I will consider it a victory if you simply think about what I say.
What do you have to say about the repuglican shot-callers in OC? Folks like Pringle, Lewis, Fuentes, et al?
Even though I am from one of the only liberal families from your halcyon days I look forward to reading your your blog. Keep it real man.
The Liberal control of the press? In OC? hehe
Interesting, Geooff. I too remember the early days of Knotts, even when Walter helped flame the fear of a Catholic President when JFK was running. There are a lot of skeletons in the closets around here, including the fact that the concept of political dirty tricks seems to have had its birth, or at least is nurturing, in OC and reappears alive and well on occasion. We have a lot to be proud of, but also considerable to be embarrassed about. Looking forward to your contribution – just keep in mind that OC is not the center of the universe.
Just have to take exception to your last comment, OBNO – OC is indeed the center of the universe, for us OJ writers!
Thankfully, the OC has not yet turned into the third world toilet that Los Angeles County has. The Tea Party has good traction here, and given their recent successes in D.C., I believe they’ll get stronger over the next two years. Hopefully, someone like Quang Pham will find the funding to challenge and finally beat Loretta. Maybe the Reeps will get their sh*t together, light a fire under Baugh and topple Agran in Irvine. It’s good that Pringle’s finally gone, but I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of him or his go**amn train.
Pringle’s gone like Putin’s gone.
Except that Putin has more personality and fewer clients.

Thought you were more my age (50) … is the photo on your website that old?
I went to Knott’s Berry Farm when there was no admission charge and the few rides that they had cost a quarter.
My parents used to get boxes of Knott’s jams and jellies in the mail twice a year. They loved the Knotts’ John-Birch politics.

My, it sounds like you regret there are liberals like me here, inviting you to blog for us.

Ironically, some of us liberals love to be in the OC precisely because we’re non-conformists. I’ve lived in plenty of liberal towns – a guy like me starts to get complacent and lose a sense of purpose.

That sounds good, that’s what we do here! Since the beginning.
In addition, I plan to spend time with you discussing the impacts of lobbying on candidate selection, global warming and the myth of “green,” the emergence of racism in politics in Orange County, the liberal control of press, academia, the government and the failures of both parties in this state to be real leaders.
Hm, I’m making a wild guess that this “racism” is that dreaded anti-white racism by which all these pampered minorities make the white man’s life a living hell where he can just not get a leg up. But let’s see what you got.
I don’t really care if you agree with me, I will consider it a victory if you simply think about what I say.
Bring it, Willis! And welcome to the Juice.
Dr. Willis sir,
“I went to Knott’s Berry Farm when there was no admission charge and the few rides that they had cost a quarter.”
You didn’t mention the Gold Mining for a quarter too! You didn’t mention the guy in the jail cell and the upside down house. Hmmm.
Well, welcome aboard the Good Ship Lolly Pop…..it’s so fun just swaying in the breeze of the OC and not making any upset people. Hey, did you notice who got elected in the last election? Have you actually talked to any of these people?
OK, how about this: How about Free Shuttle Service from the inland to the beach during the wintertime? Sure would love to see that Brea Mall right now!

The Brea Mall is a touchy subject for me since it led to the demise and destruction of my high school which had been around since the early 1900’s. I do remember the gold mining and the upside down house but not the jail cell. I do remember the free bus servise, but I also remember that it took about four hours to get to the beach from Brea.
Dr. Willis,
That is quite correct. I graduated from Fullerton Union High School in ’59. Brea-Olinda was a school district then. My dad worked for Kirkhill Rubber Company. I worked at the Mayfair Market in La Habra and at the Fullerton Airport for Lary Aviation – pumping gas in exchange for flight lessons. The guy that talks in the Jail Cell at Knott’s…..we think is still there. Check it out the next time you visit. Walter Knott himself spoke at my Graduation and offered me a job after I went up to him and thanked him for his great speech on individual responsibility. Maybe..Cordelia…I think was there too! How about going to the Hillside in Fullerton…did you ever do that? Did you guys hate the Anaheim Colonists as much as we did? Their running back Mickey Flynn killed us three years in a row.

My parents worked at the Fullerton Hillside. As a result of them working together (carhop & fry cook) I came along…
