When Jerry Brown came to Santa Ana, to speak at the O.C. Labor Day event, he first stopped to visit at Mayor Miguel Pulido’s home. Now that both Brown and Pulido have won, the Voice of OC blog is speculating that Brown might appoint Pulido to a state position, possibly in energy or a cabinet-level position involving the environment. Pulido confirmed this with the Voice of OC.
It is true. This might happen. Pulido might also get a call from President Barack Obama.
So what if this happens? Well, for one thing, this does not mean that mayoral runner-up Alfredo Amezcua would be next in line. The system doesn’t work that way. Instead, the City Council majority would appoint the next Mayor. That would likely be Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez, who has shown in the past that she is very capable of running the City Council meetings when Pulido has been away.
This would open up Alvarez’ Council seat, in Ward 5, for an appointment as well. This is ideal as the Council majority will not give that position to SAUSD Trustee Roman Reyna, who many think will run for that seat in two years. Who would it be? I don’t know. But Alvarez better get busy looking for someone right away.

UPDATE: According to the Santa Ana City Clerk, if Pulido leaves, then Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez will replace him and the City Council will have thirty days to appoint a replacement.
There is old Czech cliché for situation like this one: “Stepping from the mud into the puddle”.
The Santa Ana has no chance to become any decent city soon. With the state democrats in charge it is virtually impossible for the next four years to do anything new.
If Alvarez can’t put her personal life in order…. how can she put the city in order?
I should add that who ever will be appointed will be much easier to be voted out, especially Alvarez.
Heaven help us all…
Gustavo,
That is what I would have said if Amezcua and Nam Pham had prevailed. Thankfully they lost.
Art..Have you check the S.A. charter to be sure the council appoints? Seems like it would call for a Special Election. Check with the city Clerk on Monday to confirm.
Sim,
Remember when Solorio left? Sarmiento was appointed to replace him.
Art, please notice that Solorio was a council man.
The rules may be different for the Mayor.
I believe that 6 councilmen cannot appoint a Mayor.
Check it with the city attorney so you have an curate info!….. do not assume.
If Santa Ana voters hadn’t extended term limits, that *itch Alavarez would be out of the picture. What a sad excuse of a public servant — your Hispanic voters deserve this when they vote race over competence.
Aviso,
Our Council majority is quite competent. So is Alvarez. The only time I recall seeing incompetence was when Bustamante briefly served as Mayor Pro Tem. He was unable to run the meetings when Pulido was absent. It was awful.
Some people believe that Carlos Bustamonte deserves to be Mayor and that he or David Benavides had the best chance of being a uniter and not a divider. Isn’t it Carlos’s turn to be Mayor?
Carlos burned himself by supporting Van Tran against Loretta Sanchez. He is done. Benavides withdrew his support for Pulido and was seen on Election Night at Amezcua’s party. He too is done.
“Remember when Solorio left? Sarmiento was appointed to replace him.”
Art, that was for a Council seat.
Our Mayor is directly elected and if vacated the seat will be filled by Special Election. (Give Maria, the City Clerk a call and you can confirm this) Look for Joe Dunn to run as well as others not currently on the council including John Palacio and John Acosta.
Sim,
I have someone looking into this. However, I spoke to a close friend of Mayor Pulido last night. He said that it is unlikely Pulido will leave in the next two years. So this may be a moot point. Pulido is likely to run again in 2012.
I spoke to Palacio last week. He has no interest in running. Acosta went all in with Amezcua and that will hurt him, as Amezcua did very poorly on election day. Dunn may have left town, but I am not sure.
I’d like to see former S.A. Councilman Mike Garcia run
Art/Sean,
What do you know about the church of scientology buying the Santa Ana performing Arts center? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I’ve heard they have purchased other historic buildings in the U.S. I see them outside Norms on Saturday morning but forget to ask them. Might make an interesting post.
Tomas,
I checked this out. You’re right. Quite a story! Post pending…
“scientology buying the Santa Ana performing Arts center?”
The church of scientology has owned that building for 4 years now, nothing new here.
cook,
Really? Four years later, it is still empty, and there is nothing new here? I smell a story!
They have a lot of money and could become a MAJOR player in Santa Ana politics. The money they have make Mike Harrah look like a homeless person!
I don’t understand this video about the performing arts building.

Tomas,
I think the folks who shot it are wondering why the building is still empty.
“However, I spoke to a close friend of Mayor Pulido last night. He said that it is unlikely Pulido will leave in the next two years.”…….. The Secrets!
It means that he will, Art.
Hopefully, I will be able to explore the concept of politics and inherent secrets in my upcoming column here in the OJ titled The Secrets!

This was a Bullshit Post by Noberto, floating a trial balloon.
#1) Pulido and Brown are not nearly as close as Miguel pretends (that save the LOC from a sticky stch!).
#2) There are very few positions availible for a guy like Miguel that are as lucrative as his current crime spree.
#3) Rumors of corruption have followed this guy since the FBI chased him down and were mis-directed to Ted Moreno. The best story was when the fed planting the bug on the highwire atFlower and Greenleaf fell and broke his collarbone causing Miguel to run home from city hall at lunch. Checkout the Novemmber 1996 LOGS!!!
Finally, WHO CARES! He is perfect for a B.O.E appointment. he’s done nothing here. Again this is a Noberto whack-off fantasy!
I do think it more likely that Pulido will stay put and maybe accept a federal appointment in a year or so.
I don’t know about the corruption angle. But I do know that he has kept himself clean despite all the scrutiny. And Amezcua was so awful he made everyone else look like a saint by comparison…
All Mayor Pulido has to do is hire Orange County Scumbag attorney to the political stars – Phil Greer. Phil Greer will probably tell him that, like one of his other current clients, he only has to show up once every 4 months and still collect his paycheck. So if Pulido gets that cushy state or federal appointment, don’t look for him to reseign from his Mayoral post. I am sure he will be pushing for something with an environmental post so he can give his brother the muffler repair man a new job as well, or how about energy – I am sure he has changed a car battery as well and thus overly qualified.
If anything it is Amezcua who needs Greer. There is bound to be an investigation regarding the reason why he quit the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Trustees.
