MAPA CALIFORNIA VOTER RECOMMENDATIONS
INTRODUCTION – It is not with much fanfare that we post these voter recommendations for the general election of November in California. We have not witnessed this level of voter apathy in quite some time. We are experiencing the worst and best of times in several generations depending on where you are positioned on the annual income spectrum. The vast majority of working people of California, and the nation, are on the losing end when we consider the most important social indicators. The gap between wealth and poverty has not been as extreme since the 1890s, and it is only getting worst. The political challenge presented to all Latino and non-Latino organizations, typically tied to the Democratic Party, is the sad reality that the political party in power with majorities at the state and national level not observed since the 1970s has continued to pursue economic and social policies not in accord with its own core constituencies. Having said that, we are not confident that the Democratic Party in California or nationally will do anything beyond managing the crisis for big capital at the continued expense of working people.

The reason why MAPA didn’t endorse any Green Party candidates probably has to do with the fact it was a person linked to the Los Angeles County Green Party who was instrumental in getting Nativo Lopez criminally prosecuted for allegedly registering to vote at a location that he did not live at.
As I recall it, the investigation into these allegations was first initiated by Secretary of State Debra Bowen and later picked up by Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley. It is not at all a surprise to me that MAPA would not contemplate endorsing Mrs. Bowen for re-election given these circumstances.
Notice MAPA didn’t endorse anybody running for U.S. Senate? They could have easily backed the Peace and Freedom Party candidate. I won’t speculate as to the reason why. I wasn’t invited to any MAPA candidate forums. In fact, I don’t think they had any at all after the primary this year, which is unusual.
Ms. Cabral is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Understand PSL has a faction inside the P&F Party and they run candidates on their ballot line to educate voters about their particular brand of socialism. The P&F doesn’t mind since they consider themselves to be non-sectarian.
I knew the Bowen/Cooley connection, but not the LA County Green link one.
Shortly after Mr. Lopez was recalled from the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Trustees, he joined the Green Party. He later ran for a seat on the Los Angeles County Green Party Central Committee. I’m told there was a rivalry between him and another person who was serving on that body. The latter dug up dirt on Mr. Lopez and forwarded what they found to the Secretary of State and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

I don’t understand why they would urge a NO vote on Prop 24 either.
