Hoagy Holguin offers Latino voters a real choice in the race for the Anaheim City Council

There are a few whacked out bloggers at Red County and the Liberal OC who have been attacking Anaheim City Council candidate Thomas “Hoagy” Holguin on flimsy grounds, at best.  They clearly don’t know Hoagy, who enjoys broad support in Anaheim.

I suspect that the real reason they are attacking Hoagy is to preserve the boondoggle that is Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle’s high speed rail scheme.  Don’t forget that Red County editor Matt “Jerbal” Cunningham also supported the Measure M tax increase, and he has been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in Prop. 10 proceeds that should have been spent on Orange County’s needy children.

Hoagy has been on the Anaheim Union High School District’s Board of Education for several years.  He built a successful business from the ground up.  In these troubled times, Hoagy’s experience in creating jobs will be a real positive on the Anaheim City Council.

What really cracks me up is the unhinged comments by Claudio Gallegos, over at the Lib OC.  Did Gallegos not notice when his editor, Chris Prevatt, defended Lupe Moreno, the notorious Minuteman, on their own blog?  Gallegos himself is allied with Santa Ana’s Usual Suspects, who in years past have erected illegal barricades in French Park to keep Latinos out.

Hoagy has a lot of support in Orange County’s Latino community – which is something Gallegos completely lacks.  But, like Gallegos, Hoagy is married to a Mexican immigrant, and neither Hoagy nor Gallegos speak Spanish.

Hoagy’s Latino endorsers include:

  • Hon Manny Ontriveros, Trustee, North Orange County Community College
  • Hon Rick Ledesma, Trustee, Orange Unified School District
  • Hon John Ortega, Board President, Orange Unified School District
  • Hon Barbara Quintana, Trustee, Magnolia School District
  • Hon John Acosta, Former Councilman, City of Santa Ana
  • Fank Garcia, Owner La Casa Garcia
  • John “J Mac” Machiaverna, Business Owner
  • Audrey Cherep, President, AUHSD Personnel Commissioner
  • Speed Castillo, AUHSD Personnel Commissioner
  • Pat Pina, Community Leader

Yes, Hoagy is a Republican, but he is one of the good ones.  He is one of three Anaheim City Council candidates I am supporting, including Bill Dalati and John Santoianni.

One thing I do know about Hoagy is that he will stand up to union corruption and pension abuse.  I cannot say that about John Leos, the fake Republican endorsed by the Lib OC and the OCEA.  Leos is himself a government worker and a union shill.  His hand is most definitely stuck in the cookie jar.

There are a few other Republican candidates being backed by outgoing Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle.  Know this – he handpicked candidates who would advance his ridiculous high speed rail tax boondoggle.  Voters beware!

Hoagy has taken some grief from folks, including myself, for a vote he made several years ago, to replace an AUHSD Trustee who died with a former Trustee named Harald Martin.  We all know that Martin is as unhinged on immigration as Lupe Moreno herself, but the only other choice Hoagy had was to vote for a young man named Jordan Brandman, who was single, with no kids, and really had no business running for the AUHSD School Board.

Brandman has since disgraced himself in his Democratic Party by disavowing the move to add gay rights to our history books.  He also did not pursue the ECCO PAC endorsement this year.  But Brandman did pursue the endorsement of a slew of Prop. 8 supporters, including Matt Cunningham and his wife Laura, who was paid to hate, as the Hispanic Outreach Director for Prop. 8.  And Brandman also ripped a health care reform sticker off his shirt, at the 2009 OC Labor Day event, as I was trying to take his picture.  In hindsight, Brandman has been a giant disappointment to local progressives.

As President of the Board of Trustees for the Anaheim Union High School District, Thomas “Hoagy” Holguin also led the investigation of the Measure Z Anaheim Union High School District Construction Bond due to staff mismanagement, and saved the city of Anaheim’s schools and taxpayers millions of dollars.

Anaheim has become an increasingly diverse city, but you would not know that by looking at Pringle’s endorsements.  I hope Hoagy wins.  He will be a great role model and leader for the growing Latino community in Anaheim, and his fiscal conservatism and experience in job creation will serve all the Anaheim residents well.  Click here to read more about that.
