Was it a mistake? I don’t think so!
On page 17 of our Saddleback Valley News/OC Register on Friday there was a paid ad whose headline read “YOU BE THE JUDGE!”
If you do not receive this newspaper or the Register let me share the text.
“Taxpayers in Mission Viejo.
Stop wasteful and out of control spending and remove failed career politicians for the City Council.
Voted to double their salary/lifetime Medical Benefits
Enhanced Employees Contracts/Vote for Highest Bidder on trash contract/Voted to triple budget on Community Center
Filed Lawsuits against two school districts.
Remove Incumbent Council Members & Vote for:
Candidates for Integrity in Government
Rhonda Reardon/Brian Skalsky/Neil Lonsinger
In fine print at the bottom it reads:
Paid for by the Citizens to Protect Mission Viejo”
What follows raises some serious questions for someone in the Register ad department or elsewhere. The bottom line of the two color ad contains a web site of an individual or group opposing the very same candidates while supporting the incumbent slate. Who added that reference?
I have a copy of the order number and the ad number.
When contacted by the person who placed this ad on Saturday I was told that the Register apologized and promised to run a corrected copy in the Local Section of today’s edition at no charge.
You can find the corrected black and white copy below the weather forecast on page 6 of today’s newspaper.
Who was responsible for that bogus web site on the original ad?
Either it was added intentionally to smear the challengers or someone accepting the ad failed to “trust, but verify” that it was not a conflicting web site. There is no FPPC ID on the advertisement. However, as this is a one time ad and is below $1000 it is not a requirement.
Yes, “the silly season” is about to come to a close.
While this is a pretty bad mistake on the part of the Register, I doubt many folks have your keen eye to spot the mistake or follow local politics closely enough to understand the magnitude of that error.
Geoff.
In addition to this post I sent email copies to Register News VP Ken Brusic and several members of the Editorial Board. Who knows what impact Friday’s edition had on voters who mailed their ballots on Saturday.
The bigger concern for me is that they assign someone to investigate how this could occur and get to the bottom of this issue.
I don’t disagree with you Larry, though I find it far more likely that this was some kind of goof that a larger plot of some kind, but you never know.
Geoff:
So who is your lawyer ??
I’ve actually never needed one having never done anything warranting suit and never felt compelled to bring suit against anyone else. Product of living a clean life – what makes you ask?
Geoff.
A “free ad” does not remove the obligation to its readers for Register management to devote some staff time to get to the bottom of what happened.
On ocassion our city manager has questioned my investigative efforts. Let’s wait to see if the Register will perform a follow up to sort this out and respond.
If it were me I would surely be asking some questions.
Agreed Larry, hopefully you will get satisfactory answers quickly. Timing of this mistake was not good.
I saw the add—and would like to personally thank DAN AVERY for allegedly placing the add.
I would also like to thank Dan Avery for the numerous times he has libeled me, and slandered me in his billows web site. My lawyer is salivating over my case against Dan and his companions.
Who is your lawyer Joe?
If you can believe it, the Register’s advertising department is even less competent than their editorial department. High turnover, no grown-ups, no experience, snotty attitudes.
Actually it was Gail Reavis who placed the ad and the ad ran as placed according to the Register. Uh oh.
LBM. Mr. know it all.
Do you have the ad copy that was sent to the Register?
Are you their self appointed damage control expert?
So Larry, who placed the ad (Joe, the abbreviation for advertisement is “ad” not “add”)? Also, note in the Friday copy that the word “integrity” is misspelled. Perhaps more a problem of the person placing the ad?
Larry wrote: “I have a copy of the order number and the ad number.”
How about you post the ORIGINAL COPY submitted to the Register, not just the ad number? Just take a pix and let us see for ourselves.
MV Watcher.
At this point it really doesn’t matter. I am surprised that you missed an opportunity to let the Dispatch or the Juice to know as you are so close to all the leading players and events in this election.
No matter how you try to spin it the Register either altered an ad or failed to check it.
In fact I have ads relating to the CUSD fight where they published multiple full page ads without an ID on them. Yes, the Register’s Saddleback Valley News has a track record that cannot be swept under a rug. As such this reprint does not come as a major surprise.
MV Watcher.
Once again we have an attempt to deflect attention away from the issue at hand.
It really doesn’t matter who placed the ad. It could have been me.
The concern expressed in this post relates to a web site link that promotes the incumbents not the challengers.
Ohhhhh, Larry, you are way wrong there. It DOES matter who placed the ad. It says that is was a paid political ad. You know the reporting requirements, if it was placed by Trish Kelley or Dave Leckness you would be having a kitten right now.
So, if the original copy was placed with the deceptive campaign name and wrong website by the person who paid for it, what should be punishment?
It is NOT the Register’s job to edit the copy of a political ad. The entry level people who take these ads are not nearly as well versed in campaign law as you are.
Actually, the person placing the ad is relevant if they are responsible for providing the wrong copy.
Geoff.
Show me the proof copy of the ad with the web site. It was not on the submission.
But Larrrrryyyyyyyy, you said you spoke to the “person who placed the ad”. Please please please ask them for the original copy, and you can show it to all of us………..
You seem to be able to have “proof” until you get called on it, then you want others to find it. Or perhaps your goal is to get someone at the Register fired? Hmmmm?
Just ask “her” for the original copy that she sent the Register. Show us that submission.
MVWatcher.
How can I show it to you if I don’t know who you are or where you live so we can enjoy a cup of javva after the election.
And while we are discussing full disclosures perhaps you can tell your friend Dave Leckness that he has violated FPPC rules by failing to include his FPPC ID number on his 1,000 plus yard signs..
Larry, you dolt. Scan the copy and upload it here. Savvy??
MV Watcher. Dolt. No personal attacks permitted. Or have you forgotten?
Weren’t you in the parade at the council meeting verbally attacking me tonight?
I had a larger priority as I joined 20 residents standing at La Paz & Marguerite with yard signs and banners supporting Brian and Rhonda.
Savvy!!! You do not call the shots on my posts. I have more important things to do than read your comments, especially as I watched the Giants win the series switching to channel 30 between innings to see the attack dogs who were permitted to attack Cathy Schlicht and myself from the podium. As you know I wasn’t present but that doesn’t stop the people you associate with. Mayor Kelley has no class as, once again, she permitted it to continue. I understand that she gave Rick Sandzilier almost 6 minutes to ramble while the Public comment limit is three minutes.
In 24 hours it will be over.
So you are not going to upload madame mayor’s copy?
MV W.
Send your comments to the Register.
Let me know if they feel they warrant publication.
I can’t wait to see your real name and Letters to the Editor while you hide behind the curtain.
Oh. They refuse to publish your insightfull remarks? And you expect me to respond to every thought you throw my way? Not happening.
Good night. Need to get ready for the big party tomorrow.
Hey. Thank you! We have set a new record in the number of hits on the Juice today.
On behalf of the entire team we thank you for your contributions.
Yes
If the OC Register made a mistake it is up to the ad placer and OC Register to settle it.
If the ad placer blames the Register, but does not sue, they look lame.
If the ad placer does not blame the Register they are guilty of extme stupidity or poor spellchecking skills.
The easiest way for Larry to prove his claim would be to post a pix of the alleged original. The only reason he won’t do it is because
1. Gail Reavis was indeed STUPID
2. The OC Register did not make a mistake
Larry knows that his hand puppet was stupid and there is no way to back out of it
Maybe the OC register made up the whole ad and placed it themselves just liek Sandzimier ran into Holtman’s SUV
Patriotic American. That’s Bill Barker’s handle.
“If the OC Register made a mistake it is up to the ad placer and OC Register to settle it.
They have. That’s why it ran again in today’s edition at “no charge.”
“They have. That’s why it ran again in today’s edition at “no charge.”
For such a big cirme of posting extra information and undermining ur puppets your lawyer should get morethan just a reprint. But your hand puppet Gail was SO stupid that you had to settle for no charge re print
Post the original Larry and stop blaming others for your trust in stupid Gail Also tell your NAMBLA buddy Holtman about who placed the ad.
Maybe the OC register made up the whole ad and placed it themselves just liek Sandzimier ran into Holtman’s SUV
You just might ask Dan Avery–“Who placed the ADVERTISEMENT Dan ?? “
Isn’t Gail Reevis one of your cronies Joe? It seems she was the one who placed the ad. Sad since she is a past council member and knows better. Why are you trying to blame someone else?
I am confused Larry, how does this harm the “challengers”? Seems to me it is more distructive to the Incumbents since “Citizens to Protect Mission Viejo” endorses them….not the challengers. I
Larry, do you really mean…no personal attacks unless you are making them? In the same response you criticize MV you refer to Sandzimier as “Sandzilier”. Make up your mind.
GSL.
I never said my spelling is 100% accurate.
Anyone who has read my 900- 1,000 Juice posts can confirm that weakness.
For all concerned–maybe it was Dennis O’Connor who placed the Ad. He represents the Realtor who want high density housing in Mission Viejo. Dennis is one of Dan Avery’s buddies.
Justin.
Don’t become like Dennis O’Connor and attack him when he does not participate on the Juice. Even though he mentioned my name at tonight’s council meeting where I did not attend.
Dennis’ Real Estate PAC spent $5,000 attacking the challengers with a hit piece referencing a wide array of issues which predate their decision to run and on issues that they personally had no role with.
i.e. To include a photo of an earlier candidates out of state license plate. What does that have to do with the challengers positions in this race?
A very lame hit piece if I ever saw one. Even the challenger photos used in the hit piece look pretty good. Someone needs more experience in that area of campaign smearing.
Like yaalll used to say to me. “It must be true, I read it in the newspaper.”
Look at that gobble de gook that citizens to protect sent out, and the lies that the shelter babe keeps telling. No one wants to hurt or starve the shelter animals! In fact I got my wonderful beautiful cat from our shelter. The only person on the council that I know of who ever voted NO on anything for the shelter was FRANK URY. But she can’t get her facts straight, and it seems to be ever so fun for her to keep coming to the microphone and making extreme accusations.
With enough time and money to run more ads, I could have reminded our taxpayers about Trish giving the auto dealer $600,000.00. or missing the $1.5 million that the hospital had promised the city in sales taxes. Or going double over the rec centers’ budgets. Or, nepotism.
Alas, they are the ones who get the big bucks from the car dealers, the unions, the developers and trash companies. If you want to continue to be blind to the truth, nothing I can say will ever change your minds. But, stick around long enough, the next back she stabs may be yours. I am sure that Lance was very surprised at how quickly he became ‘Lance who?’
Most of the people who marched up to the microphone defending SLK tonight were the same bunch screaming the virtues of MacLean 6 months ago. The weather sure changes fast in MV.
Larry, can you point out one letter in the above comment that has ANYTHING to do with the original post?
Geoff.
If I were walking on a tightrope I might agree with your assessment.
However from what I have heard, and I did catch part of last nights [broadcast] council meeting, there was an indoor parade in Mission Viejo last night. I refer to the council meeting that included a leader of some new group who mentioned something negative about me that has nothing to do with today’s election.
I have been flexible with both sides as they each vent their frustrations.
Eleven hours to go.
Shelter Babe ??
You mean Miss Waddles Cody ??
Hardly a Babe in any sense of the word.
I wanted to adopt a cat from the shelter but since I had one already she vetoed my adoption because I had a cat and a bunny. Here I thouyght my tax dollars paid for a professional staff and what do I get; but a busy body intimidating the city staff.
So much for the compassionate Ms. Cody–
Tim Thumb.
Sorry to tell you but your comment has zero to do with this post.
