Voting history of Mission Viejo council member Trish Kelley

Lance MacLean & Trish Kelley

This  post will give readers a peek at the voting record of Mission Viejo council member Trish Kelley.
 Trish Kelley 2004
In Nov. of 2004 Trish Kelley (and Lance MacLean) promoted and authored a transient occupancy tax increase, TOT, called Measure K.

In Trish and Lance’s Measure K argument they state: “Mission Viejo ‘s TOT hotel bed tax rate has never been increased. Don’t be misled that we are talking about increasing taxes to spend more. The truth is this will help to maintain our current service level. An increase in TOT will ensure that visitors staying in our hotels will pay their fair share toward municipal services.”  The Measure failed with  40.6% voting YES and 59.4% voting NO

The joke is that two years ago we received around $575,000 in TOT taxes and spent upwards of $400,000 of taxpayer funds for two minutes of fame with our entry in the Tournament of Roses parade to celebrate our 20th birthday. Did that exposure result in any additional TOT in this non tourist attraction destination where we have no new housing starts for the past several years? I think not.

In being rejected last month for an endorsement by the GOP Central Committee Trish acknowledged, that , ours was paid for with taxpayer funds. She did add that the residents liked the project  or words to that effect. Note: In my research I discovered that  many other cities use volunteers to raise the funds needed for their city floats.

 Trish Kelley 2010.

In her 2010 candidate statement it reads in part that “she has consistently provided fiscally responsible leadership.” Is that being truthful?

That is not the kind of leadership that taxpayers in Mission Viejo can afford.

Some debate the pros and cons of Term Limits for council members. The best Term Limits is to vote out all incumbents at the ballot box.

As I begin creating my voter recommendations, this is one incumbent who does not warrant another term in office.

One major disadvantage on any incumbent is their voting record.

I could have included Trish Kelley approving 17 non contested Change Orders on a Capital Improvement Project, CIP, where she never objected as the $5.5 million CIP eventually reached $14,752,870.30 or thereabouts as we never know what expenses might have been added after I stopped counting.
Stay tuned. My voter guide will be posted before you receive your absentee ballots.
As always it will include multiple races outside my personal voting area.

Based on her prior experience in spending OPM Trish Kelley does not mention opposing any tax increases or special assessments in her 2010 candidate statement. When I ran her campaign in 2002 her Casta Courier ad read “opposing all new taxes and fees.”  People do change once elected to political office.
