Ask a Managing Editor!

{There’s a new Sheriff in town – and it ain’t Arpayaso}

Aight, the news is officially out. As I’ve known for a couple of days, Gustavo Arellano, long time staff writer with the OC Weekly, has moved on up to managing editor of the paper! First, I send my congratulations personally and on behalf of the Orange Juice blog. As someone who has breathed and bleed OC all his life, Arellano will be well positioned to guide writers and their stories to new heights. Orange County is a diverse community in need of diverse writing and reporting. Expect the Weekly to excel in the coming months and years in that department.

As LA Observed notes, the Mexican starts his new duties in October and not right away. For those wondering what the change means for the staff writer here is what I know. The ‘Ask a Mexican’ column goes on. Fans need not fret on that front.  Arellano, however, will no longer be staff writer. (Maybe that will help with the occasional carpal tunnel thing, no?) There will be big chucks to fill at that position, but as Managing Editor one of the first important moves he has his hand in is replacing himself!

Arellano’s landing of the position of Managing Editor has also opened up another opportunity elsewhere. For nearly the past two years he has honed his radio skills on KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles as host of an afternoon program. If, like me, you tuned into KPFK at 3 pm to hear Arellano do his radio show today, you’ll know that he wasn’t behind the mic. Yes, the Mexican will be signing off LA’s progressive radio station, although, as I understand it, he’ll continue to do shows until October.

The KPFK radio community thanks him for his volunteer work as programmer and for highlighting OC – a rarity on the radio dial in general these days.
