The Santa Ana City Council meeting tonight should be a lively one. In addition to a measure opposing the Arizona racial profiling bill, and calling for immigration reform, the Council will also be considering a motion to recognize May 22nd as Harvey Milk Day. The proclamation was crafted by Council Members Vince Sarmiento and Sal Tinajero.
Harvey Milk Day is a day of recognition that occurs every May 22, starting 2010, in the state of California for gay-rights activist Harvey Milk, who was assassinated in 1978. Milk is only the second person in state history, in addition to conservationist John Muir, to gain such a designation. He is also the only openly gay person in the country to be honored with this designation.
The City Council will also be voting to approve the Consolidated Five-Year Plan for 2010-2014 and the Annual Action Plan and authorize its submittal to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

If Santa Ana residents were polled, I’m sure this would be at the top of the list of most pressing issues.
Anita,
Well, we do have a large gay population in town. And the Artsits Village. Plus Democrats are the majority in Santa Ana.
Anita Jane Bryant (born March 25, 1940) is an American singer and gay rights opponent. She scored four Top 40 hits in the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including “Paper Roses”, which reached #5. She later became widely known for her strong views against homosexuality and for her prominent campaigning in 1977 to repeal a local ordinance in Dade County, Florida, that prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation…
As a result of her activism, she became a nationally known figure, sparking boycotts of products she advertised for. By the early 1980s she had receded from public view, and later returned to the music industry, but with little success. Bryant is a member of a conservative church congregation affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.
I still remember her singing, “Orange Juice with nat’ral Vitamin C from the Florida Sunshine Tree!” Hey Anita, we’ll pay you good money if you redo the Orange Juice song with some pro-gay words. Let’s see… give me a little time
You know that incumbents are running scared when you see agenda items like this. This measure, and the condemnation of Arizona for their immigration reform, are clearly an attempt by Pulido and others on the Santa Ana City Council to toss a bone to Liberal supporters in the hopes that they won’t support Amezqua and other challengers.
This will come back to bite them on the ass. Look for an “independent” expenditure group to send out Milk Day in Santa Ana brochures to Republicans over a certain age designed to take voters from Pulido and incumbants. It will be an I.E. so that Amezqua can also condemn it as hate speech, etc.
We will overcome,
The problem with that approach is that many of the old Republicans in town are now dead or have moved away. They are a dwindling minority. I think Pulido and company have written them off completely at this point…
How will Republican Carlos Bustamonte vote on this?
GOP for me,
I am told that there will not be any opposition on the Council. He is pretty much finished with the GOP anyway. They no longer believe he is worthy of higher office.
The Milk day celebration will be held in Santiago park.
(Nude lawn bowling by the moon light)
Must be tuff to be for gay and lesbian rights, but against the lifestyle.
cook,
What are you talking about? Most gay people don’t have sex in public parks. The people who do that are criminal deviants.
I don’t know ANY gay people who behave that way.
In fact, Chief Walters told me that most of the men arrested at the park are STRAIGHT men who are MARRIED and are cheating on their wives with other men. They are exhibitionists and perverts. I don’t consider them to be mainstream gay at all.
If it was up to Santa Ana residents, guys like Mr. MIlk would be a BAD DREAM!
OMG.. Is left wings wack jobs completely devoid of reality?
Okay, commenter #1, Anita Bryant. If my memory serves, this is how the jingle went that you used to sing on TV every day in the 60s when I was little:
I’m sorry that your career took a nosedive when you started attacking gays for a living. But this blog is prepared to offer you ONE HUNDRED BUCKS if you will record THIS jingle just for us – same tune, new words!

How do you know that Mr. Pedroza?
How much do you really know about Harvey Milk? Why don’t you listen to this Podcast and then offer a real debate on the merits of his life.

Art,
Now that Santa Ana Councilman Carlos Bustamante has voted to oppose the Arizona immigration law and voted to support to defend Gay Rights and Harvy Milk Day in Santa Ana, can we please forgive him for his Water Bra comment? Let’s welcome Carlos back into the fold.

I miss the old Carlos Bustamante waterbra photo! Seems like he’s seen the light and now supports our causes on the left! Don’t you just love when these guys/gals who shift with the political winds! Oh well, at least he’s moving our way.
Do you all have an update on how this vote went last night? Does Mr. Colins have any video on this?
And will Anita sing my new jingle?

While on this topic, you really need to give some press coverage to OC gay-basher, Alexandria Coronado and her re-election attempt for the OC Board of Education. She has a serious contender running against her and it’s time her hypocrisy is exposed. The public needs to know the truth about Miss “Family Values Piano Teacher” Coronado.
Maybe Alexandria can accompany Anita. i will jot out a piano part today.
#15:
The Vote was unanimous in Favor of Harvey Milk Day resolution…There was resounding applause from the audience, because of the recognition that this was a civil rights issue in opposition to intolerance.
Also, the Vote was unanimous for the resolution opposing Arizona’s SB1070 and asking for Congress and the President to work on Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The Resolution had three clauses…Bustamante stated he had issue with the language on the first clause but that he was going to defer to the TWO attorneys on the council (Claudia Alvarez & Vince Sarmiento), and only ABSTAIN from the first clause.
Ms Alvarez and Mr Sarmiento both had well reasoned and well thought out reasons for their opposition against the AZ SB1070, and were thankful for the public’s comments, which were supportive of the resolutions.
All Voted “AYE”.
