Fans and foes of Arizona’s SB 1070 alike keep surprising me by not being aware of one remarkable feature of the bill. I’m not making this up: Arizona citizens are encouraged to sue the state if they observe officers of the law neglecting to check the documentation of anyone who reaonably looks like they could be an undocumented immigrant. I figure that given Arizona’s official 12% unemployment rate (which of course really means 1/4 of Arizonans unemployed) this can’t help but create a whole new class of busybody opportunists looking to make a fortune off keeping AZ’s cops honest.
So sitting around the weekly Orange Juice staff meeting this morning, we hit upon what we believe will be a win-win-win idea. Arizonans may feel they have too many Mexicans; well here at the blog we have too many anti-Mexican commenters, and we also need more funds to continue our great services to the community. So next week we are going to begin sponsoring extended Arizona trips to our most outspoken xenophobes, beginning with Michelle Quinn and the Grate One, to help enforce SB 1070 with lawsuits and share their litigious earnings with the blog!
This is what we’re proposing: We only need about $500 to send Quinn and Grate – other commenters could follow later – as the advance force of “OJ Enforcers: Team Arizona.” (Art is working on uniforms right now.) As the money begins to roll in from their lawsuits – surely there are many AZ police who won’t be applying the law as wholeheartedly as they should, particularly those of Hispanic descent – we will be paid back in full, and from that point will receive 50% of their earnings to help us in our groundbreaking investigative reporting. With this duo’s keen ability to detect mobs of illegals around every corner, we should soon be swimming in cash!
THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE: We expect a concise weekly report back from Quinn and Grate, but NOT MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK. No more babbling nonstop on the comment threads – this is a serious job, not some Matt-Cunningham makework scam. And there are other reasons they should be happy in Arizona: Quinn complains taxes are too high here, and also that ALL California gubernatorial candidates are opposing the AZ law. In Arizona they can have both lower taxes, and a choice between numerous candidates vying with each other for more draconian immigration stances!
On a serious note, you haven’t heard me bitch too much about the Arizona law. I think it’s wrong and crazy and will be found unconstitutional, but I also know that the state is in the crossfire of a vicious, bloody drug war centered around the border, and I can’t prescribe how they should deal with that. (Plus my Army brother, visiting from Fort Huachaca AZ, swears to the unlikely story that the AZ legislature is simply trying to force Washington to enact immigration reform.)
What IS extremely offensive and disturbing to me, is Orange County residents celebrating the AZ law and calling for similar measures here – here where we have nothing like the crime and problems AZ is having. Not even in the same ballpark. Their enthusiasm, caught in Quinn’s Irish jig above, can only be explained by racial animus. Hatred of Mexicans that is. Off to Arizona with you!
Flawed logic, Vern, you should know better. Flawed on 3 accounts: 1) Remedy for the lawsuit would not be monetary, only court-ordered compliance; 2) Michelle’s a Celt and couldn’t take the Arizona sun; 3) I believe Grate One is Cuban and would brown up too much in Arizona, and then be hassled for his papers.
SH!! Professor, you don’t think we took those factors into consideration?
Please confine all future quibbles on this matter to private e-mails. Thank you.
sahs check me all you I AM LEGAL . AND FAR LEFT VERN ARIZONA JUST PASSED A LAW . ALL BALD HEADED LOUSY PIANO PLAYING MEN WOULD BE DEPORTED . OOPS FAR LEFT VERN START RUNNING NOW .
SAHS played baseball in az the sun does not bother me . also . i take it you teach in santa ana . nice test scores over there your doing a great job .
Your bigotry is showing and it’s not becoming.
It is not against the law for a Mexican national to come into the USA.
It is not against the law for a Mexican national to apply for resident status.
It is not against the law for a Mexican national to work in USA. (work visa needed)
Mexican’s and American’s and others cross the US and Mexican border every day.
Who is NOT allowed to cross the boarder? CRIMINALS
“Immigration reform” What is it?
Before you can fix something, you need to know what is wrong or broken.
Is the problem with immigration, not enough CRIMINALS are allowed in?
No.
So what is broken and what should be done to fix it?
Amnesty: Doesn’t identify the problem and doesn’t fix the problem.
So exactly what is wrong with the immigration policy of the USA?
(Don’t ask me because I don’t know)
larry have you taken the pedroza/zorro point of view now . if you enforce the law your a bigot now , i guess your one of those .
Look what I accidentally found. http://www.ocblog.net/ They are pretty non-hysterical and national at that. Any relation Art?
I like Arizona. The weather is nice, the people are friendly. They don’t like San Francisco and LA. What’s there not to like about Arizona?
What the hell!? Why does it take a Canadian or European 3-5 years to become a citizen for?
You come across the south border, get welfare and if you live in certain congressional districts, get registered to vote and now the people who gave you those perks want to disenfranchise the people going through the legal process?
And of course those same liberals can pull the race card and call us bendejos if we disagree!
Vern – you’re in the minority, it is not my fault if the GOP leadership is too chicken-s— to call BS on the system. Americans, including lots of “legal” immigrants want the laws enforced.
great one: the comment was directed at the Vern diatribe & yours were posted ahead of mine – of course all we have to do is shred Verns phony papers and toss him over the border.
Larry
larry that would be great i am with you on that one . post 10 take a bow . vern ,anoster ,and zorro pedroza have a hard time using a certain word to describe immigrants , they always leave out a certain word . we are not against immigrants we are against ILLEGAL , ILLEGAL , ILLEGAL , IMMIGRANTS .
Um Vern, could you set the bar any higher than keep Arizona honest? Last time anyone asked to see your papers it was World War II and you were in Germany, dude. Oh wait, I forgot about our comrades in the USSR. They asked to see your papers right up until the end I guess. Ah totalitarian Governments, I love the smell of them in the morning. Almost like Bacon or something. Coffee maybe.
#13 Vern did not set the requirements for Arizona, the legislature put the citizen enforsement provision in allowing private lawsuits of officers, departments and cities not enforcing the law.
# 10 it takes everyone 3-5 years regardless of where anyone comes from. I used to know a few (White Blond hair) Canadians here without papers and who had children here also (Citizens).
Who do you think of when you think you see an (Illegal person)? If you can answer anything other than it could be anyone then you have some rethinking you should do regarding it.
So to follow the law that Arizona must check papers of everyone that they stop for any reason, regardless of what the person looks like.
# 13 is correct this puts Arizona on a equal footing with Nazi Germany and Communist USSR policy.
I think that #13 is another new OJ reader (well actually he moseyed over from Larry Gilbert posts) who is slow getting satire. Maybe it’s my fault for assuming readers know where I’m coming from versus where Grate One and Quinn are coming from.
More disappointing is #5/7/11. Grate One, I too was a little confused by Morrissey’s #5. I couldn’t tell if he was talking to you or me.
For one thing, calling the Grate One or Quinn bigoted is sort of like calling the Pope Catholic – something I didn’t think Morrissey would bother with, not to mention Grate One hadn’t said anything bigoted on this thread yet (#3 made me laugh! 🙂 )
Then there was the choice of the word “bigotry,” a kind of vague, old-fashioned word that I’ve mainly noticed Republicans propagandists like Crowley use, to refer to people who take offense at intolerance. I THINK that’s their new definition of “bigotry.” Sort of their “i know you are but what am I” or “you’re rubber I’m glue” tactic that they use so much these days. I noticed Bigmarkod, a more honest conservative than Crowley, using it on Duane Roberts the other day for being angrily critical of Arpaio.
Except I didn’t think Morrissey engaged in meaningless rightwing buzzwords? Maybe I am confusing him with someone else but I thought I had him pegged as a more thoughtful conservative?
Is that a fair description of the new use of the word bigotry, Larry? Someone who “takes offense at intolerant views”? (I WAS gonna say “intolerant of intolerance,” but I’m the guy that approves everybody’s comments all day!)
Finally what part’s a diatribe? Maybe the last paragraph is all I can think of. The first paragraph is factual, the next to last is very tolerant of Arizona, and the bulk of it is satire – sending out our intolerant commenters to an intolerant state. Like so much political satire, it has its roots in Jonathan Swift’s “Modest Proposal.” I wonder if you would have called Swift a “bigot.”
benson who do i think of when i think of a illegal person . hmm let me think i belive that 90 percent of illegals are from one country . who do i think of you got buddy . thats like saying if im in the ocean i dont think of fish . = same concept . and for far left vern he takes its right out of the playbook . if you support the law or your against illegas your a bigot . let me tell you something vern its very simple I AM NOT AGAINST IMMIGRANTS . I AM AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS . very simple thinking you come here the right way i have no problem with anyone .
I don’t use the word “bigot,” Grate One. It’s too vague and also kind of dated; it reminds me of the Archie Bunker days, like “prejudiced” or “AFRO-American.” It’s Republicans and immigration hardliners that use that word these days, and I’m trying to determine exactly what they mean by it. I hope Morrissey clarifies.
By the way Grate One, you haven’t said if you like your picture!
Vern, it reads more like ridicule that satire to me & bigot was used with its usual meaning – intolerant of those who differ. I go with the tea baggers on this one – a smaller, less intrusive government that’s not wasting tax money chasing strawberry pickers around the desert – Guard Grate One’s position seems suspiciously narrow to me. But like Matron Quinn I don’t like high taxes which go to subsidize agriculture and drive subsistence farmers out of business and into the US to look for jobs.
“Ridicule” – maybe. I fight with these two every day for years and find (most of) their views abhorrent, but we sort of have fun anyway. I think ridicule is a fair description of how you have to (and I do) deal with a lot of their statements. Meanwhile, of course, I continue to approve everything they write.
BIGOTRY. You sent me off to dictionary.com, and the shoe doesn’t fit. BIGOTRY is defined as “stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one’s own.”
That’s ANY opinion or belief. You could, with a stretch, say I’m intolerant of Grate and Michelle’s belief that it is overwhelmingly crucial for Orange County to rid its streets of undocumented Mexicans. Probably you couldn’t say I’m “completely intolerant,” as I spend all day approving their comments instead of deleting them, but I do treat them with impatient ridicule, as they have both proved impervious to factual argument from anybody. AND now I have publicly fantasized about sending them off to Arizona.
But that does not reach the bigotry bar of being “intolerant of ANY belief or opinion that differs from one’s own.” Is THAT what you guys have been accusing us liberals of? There’s a wide spectrum of beliefs and opinions about how best to proceed with our immigration policy, a spectrum I move around on a bit myself, while engaging with any number of well-meaning debaters. But when I sense that there’s an underlying, unreasoning, racial animus, as can hardly be denied with Grate & Quinn (ask me if you need proof) I may growl. Intolerantly.
So you, Crowley, and Bigmark (apologies lumping you in with Crowley) are misusing the word bigot. Very few of us lefty or libertarian voices here are “intolerant” of ALL views different from ours.
Finally, polls show you to be naive regarding Tea Partiers’ racial and immigration views. There may be a core of idealistic libertarians that you feel comfortable with, but polls (I’ll find them if you insist) show that the bulk of tea partiers are on the same page as anti-Mexican Quinn and Grate, who in fact, I think, ARE Tea Partiers.
o k far left vern first thanks for not taking our post off of here . second i do not belong to any tea party . i do happen to agree with most of their views . some views that they have are wacked out . just to show you im not from outer space like you think i am . i happened to be a conservative . follow the laws .less gov. i dont agree with liberal views . just like you dont agree with my side . i am not anti mexican .like i said in my post i am not against anyone coming here legally . but when you try and spin it , racist , and the saying we just want to work . well we cant take on the infusion of people that want to come here .if they stay at home and do it the right way like most hispanics and other racist . than welcome to the u.s . its when you start twisting everything . putting them ahead of u.s citizens than i have a BIG PROBLEM .
correction i meant other races not racist .
with Michelle Quinn and the Grate One, to help enforce SB 1070 with lawsuits and share their litigious earnings with the blog!
MQ says:
I know I argue my points well, but I have never pasted the bar.. So you are out of luck!.. Yes, Yes I am good, but i hate to break you’re heart… They only earnings I see you making off me, would be the money that you earn getting more customers in placing ads, because you get more readership from people who love me taking down a bunch of left wing wack jobs, like a WORLD CLASS lawyer!
Is that why you want to send myself and my Cuban comrade down to litigate.. I suppose we could make a lot of cash, if we were lawyers ripping off the American people – just ask the ACLU, they have made a business out of it with out of work lawyers!
You do not need the best, just the best assholes! (Sorry for the potty mouth!)
As far as the uniform.. I have a little RED, WHITE, BLUE number.. I wear it now-and- again when I am out crime fighting…But I suppose, I could help ICE..
Its a little RED, WHITE, BLUE number.. It comes with a crown with a star and an awesome rope that when thrown around the bad guy’s- it makes them tell the truth..
You know that rope just might come in handy with the likes of LA RAZA, ect…
Good thinking BAT MAN!
As far as my bum concerned, I keep it fit and trim for my uniform!
Michelle Malquinn?
Sorry lads my ass is half the size!
🙂
