I learned a lot while walking the Tet Parade route yesterday. For one thing, Chairman Janet Nguyen proved her colleague, Supervisor John Moorlach, right again when I walked by and took her picture.
“Stop being a jerk,” said Chairman Janet. I was just taking pictures. I think she didn’t like the fact that I was there to rain on her parade. She was there with her whole gang. I found it interesting that she wore a business casual suit while Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez was decked out in traditional Viet garb. Chairman Janet’s husband looked particularly unhappy to be there.
You can see all the pictures I took at this link.
The big story, I thought, was the excitement surrounding Phu Nguyen’s campaign for the 68th Assembly District. He was surrounded by friends and campaign volunteers. By contrast, his Republican opponent, Costa Mesa Mayor Alan Mansoor, was all by himself.
Allan Mansoor, all by himself at the Tet Parade
The key to winning the 68th is getting the independent vote. Here is how the voter registration breaks down, as per the California Secretary of State’s latest records:
- 40.78% Republican
- 32.78% Democratic
- 21.93% Decline to State
- 4.5% Third Parties
While 41.61% of the voters are white, many of them are presumably Democrats. And if Latinos and Asians vote for Phu, the Democratic candidate, that will garner him about 54% of the vote.
Phu Nguyen used green power at the Tet Parade
In 2008, the Democratic candidate, an unknown activist named Ken Arnold, garnered 45.9% of the vote. The incumbent, Republican Van Tran, got 54.1% of the vote. Tran vastly outspent Arnold, but almost lost.
The district currently consists of 14.88% of Orange County, including all of Costa Mesa and Fountain Valley, and 10.08% of Anaheim, 64.92% of Garden Grove, 10.17% of Newport Beach, 82.98% of Stanton, and 69.30% Westminster.
Let’s break that down further.
Costa Mesa has 108,724 voters. The part of Garden Grove in the district has 107,239 voters. The portion of Fountain Valley in the district has 54,978 voters. And the Westminster area has 61,129 voters. Do the math. Mansoor is only known in Costa Mesa. Nguyen will have supporters throughout Little Saigon. And Fountain Valley has a lot of Viet voters too.
Mansoor drove in a car with no fans, no friends and no campaign volunteers
Phu can win this race. But will Dems turn out to vote in November, even as their party is losing control of the House of Representatives, and maybe even the U.S. Senate? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
It’s more like a political parade than a Tet parade.
I suspect ALL of Mansoor’s supporters showed up…
Lam,
That’s why I go to these events!
BTW, there were some odd entries in the parade, including a casino from Hawaiian Gardens, KB Homes and and a bunch of guys walking around in vegetable costumes.
And seeing Loretta and Janet in action was hilarious!
Goodmorning, This lesson goes out to Janet N. Janet its obvious your a women of Low Class and all your cultural upbringings show and has taught you nothing. You should apologize to your elder Moorlach. This is something you dont dooooooo. Dogs are called bitches not women…this will be the end of your career in politics. It’s deeper than you think.
In the event that you apology is not posted it will be a clear call for the crew to hit the streets and manage your campaigns for your dear friend in the 68th regardles if he is democrate or republican. This is not old school your dealing with.
kind regards,
Alfaro
This is not a cultural parade I agree with Lam Pho it’s a political ego parade for foreigns to call something thier own. Its clear there is a community that is trying to grasp onto someting fromthere mother country here is Orange County.. It’s obvios that 10% of the community is listening to someone who dide a internship in washington and has turned that into a joke. People get a clue or better yet I’ll give you this idea your culture has BEEN lost. You can build building and dress in garb and confuse this with culture but this is called lost in a melting pot of American.
Who is the hell put this SAD parade together. Exazmple As a Mexicano born here in the United states I even know this is not culture. Take it from the Latino Community we stick together and assimulate and even have Gay marriage but never loose respect for one another nor do we let someone get the best of us. It’s obvious after making a phone call I was informed Janet has a Ego trip.
Your apoplogy is long over do.

Great pictures.
The contrast between the pictures of Mansoor and Phu is crystal clear.
Mansoor talks about family values but where’s his family, where is his real stake in the community?
If Mansoor depends on his anti-Latino supporters in Costa Mesa to win this seat he’s in BIG trouble. He recently quit his job as a deputy sheriff, apparently to spend more time on his campaign. Talk about arrogance! He walked away from his job in the jail before he’s eligible for his pension assuming he’d have a nice, cushy Assembly seat next year. He’s borrowed nearly 200 grand for his campaign. Guess the “smart money” isn’t contributing enough… May be the first Assembly candidate campaigning out of a shopping cart!
“I was just taking pictures.”
I don’t know how dumb Janet is, but I’m pretty sure she’s smart enough to know that when you’re at one of these events, you’re not “just” taking pictures.
#8,
Well, if you look at the post where we put up the pictures, you will find it was rather mild.
But the fact is I had every right to be there. No one else gave me any lip. Tri Ta in fact gave me some Tet gifts for my kids.
The only other politician who was surly was Mansoor.
Congratulations to Chairman Janet and Alan Mansoor – you earned this post!
Jansoor. Surly, swirling remnants of our hateful past.
It’s not exactly fair – Phu practically owns the Tet Festival. For poor little mansoor to be there must have been like… well, like Phu having to smile and wave at a Minuteman rally.
Tacky Wacky – that person that is a public figure and makes a pathetic spectacle of herself. Who else was around as that Tacky Wacky public figure lost decorum?
so when is fugly up for re-election?
well hey- maybe tacky wacky doesn’t want anymore fugly snapshots! LOL

The Strawberry Festival Parade is best known for the non profit organizations that participate in the parade. Where are the non profit organizations at the Tet Parade?
Mansoor didn’t have any Minutemen to rally around him? Too bad!!!
