Assemblyman Jeff Miller’s wingman Steve Nolan doesn’t like Anaheim Deputy Chief of Police Craig Hunter
A former Anaheim cop named Steve Nolan is apparently making allegations, again, about malfeasance involving Anaheim Deputy Chief Craig Hunter, over at the FFFF blog.
I met with Hunter recently and spoke to him for close to two hours. We discussed Nolan and the allegations – Hunter knew they were coming.
Nolan used to work in a gang unit headed up by Hunter. From what I understand, Nolan was a bit of a character, and he used to rub the rest of the unit the wrong way.
At some point the unit members complained and eventually Nolan announced that he was leaving the unit, to return to being a beat cop. The guys tried to get him to stay, but his mind was made up.
Nolan left, but in the process he allegedly wiped his office clean, taking materials home that were parts of various investigations. Officers in the unit had to go to his home to retrieve the materials, only to find that a series of tapes had been erased. They were crucial to a big case.
Nolan perhaps knew he had crossed the line, so he went to Internal Affairs and reportedly made up a story about Hunter beating up a kid. Ironically, he was quite far from where that happened, and there was a wall blocking his view. He could not have seen what happened. But the jury felt otherwise.
It is typical for juries to hold against cops. This was the only black mark on Hunter’s record. Nolan eventually won a settlement and moved to Corona, where he opened a restaurant, the Blackwoods BBQ, with the money he took from Anaheim taxpayers via his lawsuit.
Nolan never quit the Anaheim P.D. He just left.
Was he right about Hunter? Even the OC Weekly had to admit that “A separate investigation by the FBI produced no criminal indictments and was closed the same year. Anaheim has never acknowledged any wrongdoing in the Nolan affair, maintaining that the whistleblower is free to return to the department whenever he desires.”
If Nolan was right, why did Hunter keep getting promoted? Today he is the right hand to the Anaheim Chief of Police. And the Anaheim Police Department has one of the best records in the state for fighting and lowering crime.
But wait, there’s more.
- The jury found “no wrong doing” on behalf of the officers.
- The Chief who fired him died before he could testify on why he fired Nolan.
- Nolan recanted his story he told the Internal Investigators, before he went to trial, but that doesn’t matter in a whistle blower law suit.
- The City of Anaheim’s Police Department asked the FBI to investigate, they didn’t come looking. They wanted transparancy
What about Nolan? Glad you asked.
In May of 2007, Nolan was “sentenced to three years probation and community service and ordered to pay restitution after pleading guilty to misdemeanor hit-and-run,” according to the Press-Enterprise.
Please read the Press-Enterprise article and then ponder what Nolan was like as a cop. Here is an excerpt:
Tom Jordan, an Orange County man who said he had been in a near accident with Nolan at Green River Road and Palisades just before the collision, told the CHP officer on the scene that he confronted the councilman after Nolan ran a stop sign at 30 to 35 mph and almost struck his car.
Jordan said he followed Nolan to the parking lot of Nolan’s restaurant, Backwoods BBQ, and that Nolan apologized for nearly hitting him and said he was drunk.
Nolan was endorsed in his last Council race, in 2008, by both the local teacher’s union and the local firefighter’s union. OC GOP Chair Scott Baugh just ripped Republican candidates who take money from unions. While I doubt Baugh’s sincerity, he is right. When GOP candidates shill for unions, it is bad for everyone.
Nolan is also an ally of Assemblyman Jeff Miller. Remember him? He is the guy who pervy Mike Duvall was talking to, about his sexual expolits with lobbyists, when that microphone was left on. Miller and Nolan are two peas in a pod.
What about Hunter? An article on the City of Anaheim’s website sheds some light on his character:
Chief Hunter has played a pivotal role in developing the Anaheim Police Department as a recognized leader in homeland security and community policing. As a commander in the resort district, Chief Hunter developed the Anaheim Police Department’s nationally recognized Tourist Oriented Policing program and the department’s first volunteer Corp of Resort Ambassadors. Most recently, the Department received international recognition in Police Problem Solving and was selected as a finalist for the distinguished Herman Goldstein Award at the 2007 Problem Oriented Policing conference in Madison Wisconsin.
Chief Hunter is married and has four children. His community involvement includes many years in Boy Scouting and officiating high school and college football. Two of his sons are Eagle Scouts and one is a police officer.
So are you going to believe a hit and run RINO like Nolan? Or a police officer who has done a great job in Anaheim and who is widely respected by his peers? You decide…
I see what you’re saying, Art. It was all a big conspiracy against a middle management cop. 25 newspaper headlines, multiple court cases, judges, juries, human rights investigations, civil rights activists and a $340,000 judgment. All orchestrated by one supposed drunk idiot who was mad at his boss. Unprecedented.
Or maybe it’s all true and the Anaheim police department looked the other way when suspects got beat up. It’s not like that’s something we’ve never seen before.
Sounds like this is all mudslinging. And history does show us that dirty cops DO promote. Wonder how much Mr. Pedroza got paid to write this article…
Travis,
The one point you seem to refuse to even consider is that Nolan is a total creep. So whatever he has said or is saying about Hunter has to be taken with a gigantic grain of salt.
I met with Hunter, something you have steadfastly refused to even think about. I would advise you do the same and hear what he has to say. He is widely respected and his record is great – except for Nolan’s B.S.
Do I trust hit and run RINOs? No way.
People don’t just make up crazy stuff like this. The fact there are allegations of some cop beating up Mexicans doesn’t concern you, Art? There are victims who can be contacted. If you want to go above being a blogger I suggest you do some journalism and check it out.
+1 for Travis for doing his homework.
Craig Hunter is a good man and I will vote for him for OC Sheriff. Two of his children are Eagle Scouts and one is a Police Officer! Wow. I am impressed with his parenting skills. As for Hit & Run Nolan (El Boracho), he is nothing more than another disgruntled Public Employee.
#3,
You know if folks want to avoid getting beaten I suggest they:
1. Avoid breaking the law
2. Don’t run from cops
3. Don’t resist arrest
4. Don’t hang out with criminals and people on parole
5. Don’t dress like gang members
Should anyone be beaten? No. Were the perps in question beaten? Who knows? Hit and run RINO Nolan is NOT credible.
As for doing homework, I remain disappointed that Travis is refusing to meet with Hunter. What’s up with that?
Art, your desperation to defend this character is very transparent. I told you that if Hunter wants to talk, he can figure out how to reach me. But he won’t and you know that. Cut the crap.
Travis,
Our readers should know that I gave you Craig’s contact info and asked you to suspend your post until you had a chance to meet with him and get his side of the story. Instead you ran the hatchet job of a post that is based on the testimony of a discredited hit and run RINO. Now you want Hunter to contact you? Seriously? You obviously have an agenda to trash him, with no good reason.
I think it was pretty crappy to post a one-sided hit piece. I am disappointed in you. Nolan is a piece of crap. Why would anyone believe him?
Travis,
What else shall we call it? Your entire article is based on testimony from one guy – discredited hit and run RINO Steve Nolan. You refuse to meet with Hunter to get his side of the story. Result? A hatchet job!
Nolan, ironically, is the Dick Jones of Corona. If Nolan was on the Fullerton City Council he would be one more union backed stooge that you would be opposing!
Consider by the way that the only union that did NOT back Nolan was the police union. Wonder why?
Travis,
The basis of all these allegations against Deputy Chief Hunter stem from the claims made by Steve Nolan. Nolan later recanted the claims when it was time to testify under oath. Why is that? Was he afraid of perjuring himself?
As the hit and run demonstrates Nolan is a man of little character and yet you still stand firmly behind claims that even he has recanted.
As a former police officer you would think that he would be a shoe in to get the Corona Police Officers Association backing for his council campaign, but he did not. He got the employees and firefighters support so it can’t be because he is anti-union. Perhaps the Corona Police Officers can see what a slimeball he is, too bad you can’t.
This guy is the Corona version of Dick Jones. Are FFFF now Dick Jones supporters? Of course not. So why do you support someone who acts like him?
I would encourage you and all your friends at FFFF to meet with Deputy Chief Hunter. If you want to continue trashing him after that, though I doubt you will, so be it.
“Nolan later recanted the claims when it was time to testify under oath.”
Who told you that, Sean? Craig Hunter “off the record”, I suppose. If that’s true, which of the many claims did he recant? And how come nobody told the jury?
Art, from Hunter’s website:
“I oppose the legalization of any drugs, and I fully support the war on drugs.”
Sounds like a JAC (Just Another Cop) to me. I’m planning on sitting this one out.
All I care about is that Loser Jack Anderson who Rank&file Hate and know what a back stabber he is will not be a candidate for Sheriff. Everyone knows Anderson was a Sellout to Moorlach in trying to get appointed Sheriff. Thank Goodeness this didn’t happen.
I have met Craig Hunter and I have found him to be a very professional and credible man. The back and forth bashing on this story is by mainly 2 individuals. We are all welcome to make up our own minds on who to vote for with out this kind of irresponsible bias journalism.
I urge everyone who intends on voting to do their own research and make their own decisions. One comment stated “People dont make these things up”. That is Crap! When there is a smear campaign and money involved (over $300,000) you would be surprised of how someone may lack integrity. There is BIG motive to lie.
And my last thought about the fight against gang members… I dont believe anyone has the right to be assaulted but gang’s are based on violence from the start. Police offers are in danger and fear of their lives everyday. How many times a day do we hear of teen gang members shooting reckless bullets hitting innocent children and terrorizing a community?
I’m not feeling much sympathy for a gang member who may of gotten roughed up in custody a bit, sorry! As a mother I see how gangs push drugs on children, rape, terrorize and kill so if you choose to break the law and be a punk then you will be treated as such.
In fact, reading this, I like Craig Hunter more now. Let’s show these criminals a little bit of the same fear they make us law abiding citizens feel every day by their malicious behavior.
When a gang member gets arrested he should thank the system for our relaxed laws because in other countries they just kill you! We will feed them, educate them, provide health care and 3 meals a day…BOO HOO!
HUNTER FOR SHERIFF!
Hunter is a political lap dog controlled by special interests. If you don’t believe me, look at who endorses him. Then, look at Hunt, and see his endorsements. I don’t see organizations like Oath Keepers endorsing Hunter, and it’s for obvious reasons.
Did everyone see the new news on Steve Nolan? Appointing Bob Livingston to the Corona Planning Commissioner position after Bob Livingston said he didn’t think Steve was drunk the night of the DUI hit and run. Bob Livingston we just learned has been convicted of a FELONY for bank fraud (and ordered to repay almost 1 million dollars to Bank Of America and Aurora Loan).
you might consider removing the website link to Steve Nolan’s business from this page. You’re giving him an undeserved inbound link.
To “Mrs. Robot” — I’m sorry, but I don’t feel comfortable publishing your allegations, whether from personal knowledge or hearsay, without at least knowing who you are in the (likely) event that they were challenged.
