“Pollster John Zogby tells Newsmax that the Republican Party could be “teetering on the brink” of extinction as it fails to appeal to the fastest-growing demographic groups in America,” according to Newsmax.
The bottom line, according to Zogby, is that “the GOP is not taking advantage of Democratic setbacks because it has not put forth alternative policies of its own.”
The problem is demographics. Minorities are gravitating away from the GOP – and they are not the only ones:
He told Newsmax: “That’s very true, and that’s got to be a cause for concern. Look at the fastest-growing groups in the electorate. Those groups are Latinos, African-Americans — even though the numbers of African-Americans are not growing, the number who are voting is certainly growing — young people 18 to 29, and what we call the creative class, people who work in the world of ideas.”
These are college-educated professionals such as software engineers, graphic designers, attorneys, and workers in the healthcare technology field. They make up 20 percent of the workforce, Zogby said, and “make up critical parts of the population in states like North Carolina, Florida, New Mexico, and so on.
“Republicans are not appealing to those groups, and yet those groups are on the upswing.”
Homosexuals left the GOP a long time ago. All you have left in the shrinking Republican tent is religious conservatives and a smattering of fiscal conservative. The latter are increasingly leaving to go DTS or to join third parties, such as the Libertarian Party.
The red cupboard is bare…and I see no hope for change, particularly here in California where the Republican leaders want to keep the primaries closed.
How many times are you going back to the same boring watering hole you blue belly hack?
Surely you have something better to write about, like the coming indictment of Bill Richardson, the Ethics Investigations of Charlie Rangel and Chris Dodd, the FBI Investigation of Jack Murtha, the pay for play of Cong. Jesse Jackson, and the kickback scheme of Obamas Car Czar?
No, you would rather distract from the corruption in power. Rachel Maddow loves you.
You will NEVER, NEVER write about Democrat corruption.
BLUE BELLY HACK = ART PEDROZA
Art, where do you unearth all these dimwits?
“Is the Republican Party on the brink of extinction?”….. absolutely not!
FYI, the Republican Party on the brink of renaissance.
The GOP extinct? That’s up to them. So long as they keep up with red herring issues (Obama isn’t a US citizen and Obama needs to apologize) and the like, they will keep on looking like a fringe party. This is stuff that belongs at the grocery checkout along with The Weekly World News and The Globe. As a lifelong republican I am anxious for the party to get on to more positive and useful issues. Hopefully the GOP will wake up and do so for everyone’s sake.
mr freedom welcome to the world of wacky pedroza . that is all he ever writes about .not a day goes by where you see THE G.O P IS LOOSING HISPANIC VOTERS , THE G.O.P IS RACIST TOWARD HISPANICS . THE G.O P IS DISAPPERING . HE WILL POST THE BAD THINGS OF THE GOP at a ratio of 10 -1 . no you wont see those things you said up there . he is too busy attacking the g.o.p while all that is going on under his nose . if the g.o p is so bad maybe all the press we get from him will make the g.o.p popular again . and zenger funny we say the samething about your post . a total far left dimwit hack .
David,
Like flies to flypaper…
The Republicans in San Bernardino County Central Committee cry that oh the Latinos are so traditional values where they are anti-gay and value the unborn, but why are they not voting for us.
I hear this over and over, but the reason why blacks vote for the Democratic Party are basically the same why Latinos vote for the Democratic Party.
from an article on VDare: Hispanic Republicans – A Media Myth
Are Hispanics – or, for that matter, blacks – going to vote Republican based on these moral views? The answer is already in: no. Except when voting on rare single-issue referendums, such as California’s anti-gay marriage initiative California two years ago, the Hispanic electorate seems far more concerned about bread and butter issues. Indeed, in their new book The Emerging Democratic Majority, (click here for my review) John Judis and Ruy Teixeira contend that in American politics, social issues are essentially a luxury item that primarily interest better-off groups.
Matt,
I need to read that book! Thanks…
*Hey, Colin Powell was just on Larry King…he
maintains…he is “still a Republican”! OK, we
officially have one celebrity candidate
possibility. “The Godfather of Republicanism”
Rudy Guiliani is talking about going after a
Gubenatorial run in New York. Another positive
sign. So, that gives us two people with some
veracity.
Now we just need 20 more big name Hollywoodies
like J Lo or Christina Aguilera to run for
Governor in California – as Republicans of
course! Where was J Lo born again?
Unfortunately, the GOP is not going extinct. It is slowly reconstituting itself, and it striving to return in a new incarnation.
The new form that the GOP takes will depend, to a significant extent, on the performance of Democratic Elected officials in Washington and on the efforts of Democratic activists at the local level.
The better job our officials do in D.C., the weaker the new GOP. The worse our officials do in D.C., the stronger and more powerful the new GOP.
The most important thing is for Democratic activists to get the word out about what we are trying to do and why we are trying to do it. In order for the Republicans to regain power, either our Democratic leadership has to fail in D.C. or Republicans have to confuse and deceive the public about what we Democrats are doing.
Since we control the White House and both houses of Congress, and since our elected officials are mostly competent, our leadership in D.C. is not likely to fail. This leaves Republicans with only the confuse-and-deceive option, and you can bet they will make the most of it.
It is my impression that the DPOC is not making the right moves. It should set a new goal for itself to register another 500,000 voters, and it should devote itself to achieving that goal as soon as possible.
The DPOC needs to launch round-two of its aggressive voter registration drive in Orange County.
As for OC’s Democratic activists, we need to find an effective way to advertise the Democratic Party. Our Party has what people need, and we have to make people aware of that fact.
Parades and Flag Day celebrations allow us to make a show of our spirit, and these events are important for that reason. However, they don’t make people aware of how well our party can address the problems they currently face.
It won’t be long before the GOP launches a confuse-and-deceive campaign, and if people are not adequately informed about what the Democratic Party has to offer, we will lose ground to the GOP’s smoke and mirror show.
Orange County Democratic activists need to work together to get the word out. If there is an easy way for OC residents to learn about the Democratic Party, then it will be much easier for the DPOC to register voters and it will be much harder for the GOP to confuse and deceive the public about us.
Yes, I have ideas about how to advertise our party to the public. I will be happy to visit your club to brainstorm about this project. Visit my facebook site, and leave me a message if you are interested in having me speak at your club.
“Another positive sign. So, that gives us two people with some veracity.”
Il Duce? You must be kidding. The man represents all the worst of the neocon unAmerican imperialists who seized the party.
And then you have the illiterate trashers and nutjobs like #6 who need to be flushed out if we want to establish real conservatism in out party – and not the mindless rantings of Bible-belt creationists, dim-bulb jingoists, and the like; in other words flush out Bushism.
And now that I think of it that doesn’t leave much party left. But at least it will stand for something intelligent.
mr lara you call your democratic lEADERS COMPETENT , pelosi , boxer , reid , please you got to be joking. you got 3 years and NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN . not me you or anyone else on here even zany lonney tunes zenger . the way things are going your party is headed for a BIG fall . with b/k health care , stimulas part 1 . 2. 3. amensty for illegals . after congress and nobama get done . if the reps can get a candidate out there . we dont know who it might be but i guess by then the american people will be so sick , broke , taxed to death that they might choose to take nobamas power away . by having the house / senate . or making him a one term prez .
Absolutely, they are at the brink of extinction.
As one of the target audience, software engineer, I would certainly never get caught voting for the party of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity.
These idiots who lie and distort whenever they open their mouths are the grave diggers for the Republican Party.
http://inlandutopia.com/2009/07/28/the-hispanic-republican-myth/
I wrote something on my own blog inspired by this post. Reaching out to Hispanics, the gays and the youth will save the republican party from extinction.
is this the same little joe you probally voted for that guy who never lies too ahh slick willie . lie and disort have you seen msnbc . probally not .
Doctor Zengar, Considering our recent outtings and party meltdowns….the Republican Party is remarkably hanging in – on the basis of the base. Certainly not the current array of candidates and electeds. However, we now we have a firm “baby group” of some really good people. (We can’t tell you who they are….you would get jealous!) There is little doubt however that ridding ourselves of the new “Sarah Palin branch” of the party will be an important factor in winning anything nationally in the future. Maybe, all the ethical breakdowns in the Republican party are a very healthy thing. As Clemensa said in the Godfather: “Nah, it’s a good thing….we need these wars every 10 years or so to get rid of all the bad blood.” “Now we go to the mattresses!”
Our mission statement right now has to be: “Find a message!”, “Find some celebrity candidates!” and finally: “Find an ethical ear to the public!”
Seems like we are looking more like the Marines – all the time! (Rangers, Special Forces, Armored Cav…guys and gals too!)
Luckily, there will be lots of them returning from Iraq and Afghanistan soon, who may be willing to step up.
post 18 , very good one .
I once was a republican, when the party focused on responsible streamlined government.
Since then the GOP has become the anti-party. Anti everything, but no solutions to any problems party.
People want solutions, not endless talking about abortion, anti gay, anti anti everything. Tax cuts will solve everything and we can spend more to help big business ideas.
Until some different leadership is in place Zogby is right. Perhaps a new Party will appear or the Republicans will re-make themselves, but the way it is now I do not see a future.
I do believe that it is important to have different parties to put forth ideas and solutions. But for now and the forseeable future I will be happy to be an active democrat.
Republicans looked down for the count when everyone blamed Hoover for the Depression in 1932, and again when the world was in love with Kennedy in the 1960’s, and again when half the party was going to jail in the mid-70’s after Watergate.
Yet we always bounce back. There was the Cold War in 1946, and Civil Rights backlash in the mid 1960’s, and the hostage crisis in the late 70’s together with Reagan’s celebrity.
In the depth of Bush’s grotesque spending spree, goofus personality, and an unpopular war the GOP still polled around 49%. Give things enough time and the party will bounce back. A shift to the Libertarian Party is a daydream with no empirical support.
On the demographic side, there was a time when the “Solid South” voted nothing but Democratic and that was completely reversed in the 1960’s. Similar changes have happened (less dramatically) with post-assimilation Irish and Italians. There is every element present for such a thing to happen with the Latino community, with more assimilation, etc. Latinos are church-goers and hard workers with a business orientation, and Republicans born after 1950 who grew up on Sesame Street and the Electric Company will be much less inclined to say the stupid things that put off minority voters.
Only ignorant white trash say racist things. (Irony intended. Some of my best friends are ignorant white trash and they’re good people. Very articulate, too.)
Ron,
I agree with most of what you wrote, but you forgot one thing – the youth. An entire generation has grown up watching “South Park.” They question everything and lean, big time, Libertarian and DTS. They don’t trust either the red or the blue parties.
And, as Zogby pointed out this week, the GOP has lost creative folks and young professionals.
Couple that with losing the Latino vote and you have the makings of a resurgence for the Libertarian Party. Our ideas are the only ones folks are talking about – neither the red or blue parties have any answers.
Will the Libertarian Party emerge? I would say it is a qualified maybe…
