Sheriff Sandra Hutchens hires a consultant and gets ready for a rough campaign

O.C. Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has hired Republican consultant Dave Gilliard to run her reelection campaign, according to the L.A. Times.  Here are a couple of excerpts from their article about Hutchens’ campaign:

She will sell herself as a cop and a “compellingly genuine human being who does not have the political DNA that many Orange County office-seekers are born with,” Gilliard said. “I’ve run campaigns for over 20 years and actually never seen a candidate like her.”

“There’s a lot of huffing and puffing right now,” Gilliard said. “People who long for the old days, and it’s going to take a while to get over it, but they’re going to have to get over it.”

I think Hutchens has been a total failure.  But at the same time I did enjoy seeing the Carona hacks have to turn in their badges and guns.  Yet there is little doubt that Hutchens overplayed that card – angering law abiding citizens who have good reason to carry concealed weapons.  There is no reason to issue such permits to hacks like Adam Probolsky, Mike Schroeder or Jon Fleischman, but there are plenty of other folks who do have good reasons to carry such weapons – and they won’t be voting for Hutchens.

So who will run?  Hard to say, but I think we will see ousted OCSD Deputy Bill Hunt and SAPD Chief Paul Walters in the mix.  Former L.A. Commander Ralph Martin would be better than either of them…
