If only President George W. Bush had not ruined Colin Powell’s career. Today Powell gave yet another powerful speech, this time in Naples, Florida, to commemorate Martin Luther King day. Here are a few choice excerpts, from an article on MSNBC:
“Inspired by his words and actions, others took up the cause to bring us to where we are today,” Powell said via satellite.
Even with Barack Obama’s election as President, Powell also talked about not letting King’s dream die.
“He would never rest. He would never be satisfied. He would still be beating that drum,” Powell told the crowd.
Powell also spoke today in Minneapolis, where he said, according to an online source:
“Inspire? Lord, did he inspire,” General Powell said. “He inspired millions around the world to believe that things could be changed, that you could throw off the chains holding you down and rise up.”
“I congratulate you all for giving the Twin Cities community the opportunity to come together and remember the legacy of this great American, a man whose life perfectly matched the theme you have chosen for this breakfast — to lead, grow, inspire.”
Our next President also had a few words to say about Martin Luther King today. Here are some excerpts from the Washington Post:
In a statement marking the national holiday that commemorates King’s birthday, Obama said the civil rights leader lived life “in loving service to others.”
“As we honor that legacy, it’s not a day just to pause and reflect — it’s a day to act,” the president-elect said. Noting that Americans are participating in more than 11,000 service projects across the nation, he appealed to people “to turn today’s efforts into an ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of others in their communities, their cities and their country.”
Obama said: “Tomorrow, we will come together as one people on the same mall where Dr. King’s dream echoes still. As we do, we recognize that here in America, our destinies are inextricably linked. We resolve that as we walk, we must walk together. And as we go forward in the work of renewing the promise of this nation, let’s remember King’s lesson — that our separate dreams are really one.”
Was today the best Martin Luther King day ever? If only he had lived to see Obama sworn in as our next President…
Colin Powell ruined Colin Powell’s career and reputation.
Colin Powell ruined his own career. If he didn’t believe that what he was doing was right then he displayed a grotesque lack of moral character.
I have to agree with #1 & #2. He should have resigned when no WMDs were discovered. By waiting until after Bush was re-elected he only helped perpetuate the Regime.
