US President George W. Bush said in an interview Monday that the Bible is “probably not” literally true and that a belief that God created the world is compatible with the theory of evolution Link
….Asked whether the Bible was literally true, Bush replied: “Probably not. No, I’m not a literalist, but I think you can learn a lot from it.”
Translation: I don’t believe in all that Bible crap that you do. Ha, Ha, thanks for voting for me, suckers! Remember when I said that God told me to go bomb Iraq?
~Snicker!~
I hope this is a wake up call to all of the born again right wing Christians who believe that when someone says they are a born again Christian, it automatically makes their choices infallible. This was a ploy by a very brilliant man, Karl Rove, he knew that this community of people will buy into anything someone says as long as they agree to the label of “born again”. I hope they’ll start thinking for themselves a bit more, but I’m not holding my breath.
Anon teacher,
Bush’s base is perfectly gullible. They habitually practice disbelief in observable facts in favor of fairy tales. They just ate up Bush’s assurances that he was one of them. Dummies.
We know he doesn’t “read” so it’s hard to imagine him actually knowing what’s written in the Bible.
I wonder what Hannity, Bill O and the other 28%’ers will have to say about this. By the time Bush leaves office, he might just be down to 0% of any US citizen supporting him.
Think any of the Christo-fascists will think to actually ASK Palin if she “really” believes the way they do, before pumping their money and resources into another religious faker?
The scary thing about Palin, is that she really believes the way they do. I completely agree with everything you said. I have read that the evangelicals are “up in arms” over Bush’s statements.
The scary thing about Palin, is that she really believes the way they do.
anon teacher,
Until she DOESN’T. She’s an opportunist and good at confidence games. The religious right will take the bait good and hard from her. And then, just like all the other times,
the GOP will be the Lucy to the Christians’ Charlie Brown. They believe each time even though they know that the big lie is coming up again. They expect to be lied to and that’s exactly what they get.
Well, now I have to disagree with you. I think they’ll get what they paid for with her and that’s even scarier.
There are a lot of good, God-fearing, religious people who build their family and community around their neighborhood Church and School who do not deserve any scorn or derision whatsoever. They are struggling to do the right thing and figure things out the same as the rest of us. They aren’t interested in condemning others for their choices only in protecting themselves in a world filled with temptation. Lets leave these folks out of any discussion of religious extremists and be clear that we are discussing extremists.
#6, Anybody who believes that the bible is literally true is a Christian extremist.
Anybody who believes in Creationism or “Intelligent Design” can only get that from a literal reading of the bible, and is therefore an extremist.
There recently was a nice article in Scientific American, about Francisco J. Ayala, a geneticist ordained as a Dominican priest, who is on the faculty of UCI. One of the highlights: He reminds people that one out of five pregnancies end in spontaneous miscarriage. He then asks, “If God explicitly designed the human reproductive system, is God the biggest abortionist of them all?”

It’s really entertaining to watch lefties debate how Christians will react to something based upon their distorted, caricaturisation of what Christians believe.
This post and subsequent comments are almost comical (with the partial exception of #6).
Sorry but I know and have known for many years many of those “caricatures”.
Great discussions here. I see that even Mr. Jubal is entertained.
Let’s look at what a “Christian” choice that Sarah Palin actually is.
What form of Christian ethics would be unconcerned about her lack of honesty, absence of competency, careless spending sprees, and blaring disregard for duty of care for protective enviornments? She was so absent from her job as Govenor, that citizens would post up reminders of “Where is Sarah?”. Are you telling me that these are the hallmarks of good Christian ethics?
Or is it the guns, oil, anti-choice, War, science denying, homophobia, and being a Breeder and not a Reader, components which draw the biggest crowd of “Christian” supporters for Palin?
Is her religious experience of speaking in tongues and being liberated from witches somehow considered “mainstream” in legitimate traditional Christian circles?
Red Vixen, whomever you are.
You accuse Gov Palin of careless spending. Have you personally gone shopping with her? Or, are you referring the the RNC who purchased the governor’s campaign clothing? When you can show us excessive credit card or check stubs with Sarah’s name then you may have a point.
I like this one. Sarah has been “absent frorm her job.” Le’t peel the onion back on this one.
Senator McCain selcted Sarah on Aug 1st of 2008. The election was held on Nov 4th. As such she was MIA for just over three months.
Now let’s look at Senators Biden, Clinton and Obama who entered the race in Jan/Feb of 2007.
How many Democratic presidential debates did we endure? Let’s see. FYI. Twenty six beginning on April 26th 2007. Therefore Senators Barack, Hillary and Joe were MIA for over 20 months or six times as long as Sarah. I see the glass half full while you see it half empty but the facts speak for themselves. And let me point out that our side also had elected officials who were MIA while candidates fron both sides of the aisle were still on the federal payroll. Oh yes, they would make a cameo appearnace while on the campaign trail such as the bailout.
Perhaps to make these future presidential contests more of a risk every candidate should resign from their elected office so that they do not have a life preserver should they lose.
RV:
When you are able to engage in an intelligent discussion, rather than just stringing together left-wing vitriol, catch-phrases and buzzwords, then get back to me.
Matt/Jubal:
Three words: Pot, kettle, black.
i.e.,
Brother Vernon.
We can always count on you to add something of value to the debate.
Gosh, the Bible is not literally true but you can learn a lot from it. So it sort of speaks to us in parables. What kind of God would speak to us in parables? Other than Jesus who said he was speaking in parables.
Does that mean George W. is willing to question if Noah really crowded two of each species on an ark, and if women are really ritually unclean during their menstrual flow, and shellfish are really an abomination because they live in the water without fins and scales, and if Moses really turned a staff into a serpent? What a traitor.
Speaking of traitors, its kind of embarrassing that since the GOP used religious affitinity and family values to expand its base into the blue-collar demographic that would otherwise vote Dem (that was about 28 years ago) the political accomplishments on behalf of the religious right have pretty much been zero.
Prayer in schools: Still not happening.
School choice: Some progress on home schooling but the Catholics proved in the 19th Century that you could create a parallel school system at your own expense, as long as you’re willing to pay for the other system that you’re not using with your taxes.
Creation vs. evolution in classrooms: Nope.
Pornography: Even pre-schoolers can download porn on the internet.
Abortion: Still legal in all 50 states.
Gay rights: Stuff that used to be a crime is now considered a constitutional right, and the public is split on an issue (same sex marriage) that 30 years ago was not even dreamed of a possiblity.
Immigration: Amnesty in the late ’80s, followed by unreaslistic quotas leading to de facto amnesty today for 12 million souls who wash dishes, make clothes and pick fruit sin papeles.
In other words, there’s a whole generation of anti-intellectual (we don’t have all that there book larnin’ but we love the Lord) types who are close to waking up and smelling the betrayal.
