The Abolition of Marriage Act

All right. I vented several times on this BLOG. And I despair at the uncivil state of rhetoric. I, for one, do not HATE. I think people who cannot debate without debasing the values of their opponents are the truly malicious. Name calling is the last refuge of the scoundrel with a cold heart.

Now, I think, quite sincerely, that the subject on the table with Prop 8 is the abolition of marriage. You CANNOT allocate special rights to a single group of people and abrogate chosen rights for everyone else. A gay man may marry a woman just like me. And they have. I will not be entitled to marry a man. If I find it convenient, if it gets me more social benefits, more health care, etc… why might I not? Does no one realize the incentives this will raise to game the system by signing a piece of paper? These are not inconsequential details. And you cannot raise one objection if I find that I love MORE THAN ONE. Thats intolerant too. And then I’ll bring in the guy and his dolphin.

So I am going to advocate simply, here and now, for the abolition of marriage. Seriously.

Its simple. There are only three reasons, historically, why we have marriage anyway.

One is genetics. The second is social stability. And the third is economics.  By the way, in case Vern missed it, the first two dont count anymore. So, instead of IGNORING all the CIVIL RIGHTS which are inconvenient to address at this juncture (and you would dare to consider yourself belonging in the company of slave abolitionists Vern? You sounded more like a Whig to me) let’s just jump right to where we’re going.

Let’s abolish the meaning of marriage altogether. No more marriage deductions. No more co-filing of tax forms. Everyones an individual. No more death benefits. Lets eliminate the economic benefits of marriage. Mandate a living will. When you go to the DMV, you can update it.

Does anyone care to make a coherent objection? Tell me what standard of marriage is WORTH adhering to and in so doing abrogating the rights of any minority group?
