As this story is breaking on the Internet let me share part of the letter which I received in the mail yesterday from Chuck DeVore, California State Assemblyman, 70th District.
“Dear Larry,
On Wednesday, November 12, I will declare my candidacy for the United States Senate against Barbara Boxer in 2010. You may see my announcement live on-line at 1 p.m. at www.ChuckDeVore.com. Recession and credit markets, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, price volatility and climate-change–President-elect Obama faces tough challenges–challenges that will be made even more dangerous with the dramatic left-turn America took last Tuesday.
California Senator Boxer will come up for reelection on her 34th year in public office in less than two years. Her time as a politician has marked her as divisive and extreme; this is why opinion polls have consistently shown her to have one of the lowest approval ratings of any California politician.”
Folks. I commend Assemblyman DeVore for taking this huge step of faith. Of our two US Senators I would agree that Senator Boxer is an easier incumbent to defeat than Senator Feinstein as former State Senator Dick Mountjoy discovered in his 2006 campaign where he received 32 percent of the votes cast.
I predict he will get no more than 35 percent if he is lucky. He should run for a smaller office first. Chuck is a young man still, he could run for Lt.Governor or something modest like that.
Larry,
Thanks for posting this. I knew about it but just didn’t have the time to put it up. Chuck has a few fans here in the O.C., but he will get royally spanked by Boxer. It won’t be close. He would be better off retiring.
Art.
Although I waited to post Chuck’s announcement the story is surely in the media including today’s OC Register.
Defeating Diane Feinstein is a tough task. Having previously served under former Senator Dick Mountjoy when he was president of the CRA and now watching Chuck as he tackles the issue of energy independence with a focus on nuclear energy I would say that unlike 2006 this will be a very close race.
Chuck is getting off on the right foot by starting his campaign today. This will give him ample time to expand his base and raise necessary funds for the campaign.
This will be one race that I will be monitoring very closely.
Chuck in 2010!
He has my vote.
“Diane [sic] Feinstein??” More Larry confusion…
Maybe you have to be a Dem like me to be able to distinguish DiFi from B-Box.
good luck chuck . you got my vote . i cant stand boxer . one of the worst reps we have ever had . she is from the far left S .F side of politics . it will be tough for him to win but hopefully he can make her sweat a bit .
Larry,
Chuck Devore is going to get thoroughly trounced by Senator Boxer.
As a Democrat I would gladly take Boxer over Feinstein anyday. Feinstein has routinely caved in to the Bushies demands. And she push for the pathetic prescription drug plan that the Bushies wanted. Simply horrible!!
GO BARBARA GO!!!!!
Vern. What are you smoking? Former State Senator Dick Mountjoy challenged incumbent Diane Feinstein for US Senate in 2006. Did you vote in that election? She won, he lost, end of story.
Of our two US Senators I would argue that Diane is a much tougher incumbent to defeat than Barbara Boxer. That’s my assessment and I am sticking to it.
OK Larry, THIS time I was wrong, I thought you pulled DiFi out of your hat, but now I see she was mentioned in Art’s post. So no non-sequitur (although her first name is DIANNE.)
I can’t wait to see what Phobius has to say about DeVore’s run, he is a huge DeVore fan, as we saw in his post just before the election:

What could hurt DeVore most is the Republican Party itself. Having a good conservative running always inspires the RINOs to defeat him lest we have a Reagan-like candidate again. The CA GOP establishment gave Reagan a hard time and just as they trotted out Schwarzenegger to defeat a true Republican, Tom McClintock, they will fight him with a fake Republican (Carli Fiorina) to deterr him.
Schwarzenegger has not given people a reason to stay with any Republican candidate. It won’t be Democrats who will defeat a candidate like DeVore. It will be Republicans who, like Schwarzenegger, have behaved like Democrats.
DeVore is a superb candidate.
