R.E.D.(Real Estate Diversion) Alert. When you need to take a break from politics, give your mind a rest in Real Estate.
Obama Campaign Joins with Michigan Families Facing Foreclosure to Defend Voting Rights. The complaint (copy of complaint) filed today seeks declaratory and injunctive relief to challenge the “lose your home, lose your vote” vote-suppression program adopted by the Macomb County Republican Party, in concert with the Michigan Republican Party and the Republican National Committee, as well as unnamed Defendants who will implement the scheme at polling places in Macomb County and throughout the State. This “lose your home, lose your vote” program is part of a broader scheme – misnamed an “election integrity” program – to harass voters and suppress the vote throughout the State of Michigan in the upcoming election on November 4.
Heartlessness on Steroids. “Senator McCain said last week that he was ‘divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have,’ and he certainly has proven that to Michigan families,” said Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe. “Senator McCain has no real plan to turn Michigan’s economy around or help families faced with losing their homes – so his party has decided the only way to save his campaign is to deny the right to vote to families most affected by his disastrous economic policies.”
The leading foreclosure firm in the state seems to be a major supporter of the GOP’s election efforts. That’s a connection worth exploring–a law firm to file the foreclosures and a political party to challenge voters based on those same foreclosure filings. Article.
The impact of the mortgage crisis just keeps widening. People who were cheated by subprime lenders have lost everything they put into their homes, have seen their credit destroyed and now may be unable to prove their eligibility to vote. Costs are also mounting for people who live in neighborhoods that were the targets of subprime campaigns–abandoned properties, crime, plummeting housing values. Those neighbors are paying those costs even when they had nothing to do with subprime debt.
As the foreclosure crisis gets deeper, it also gets wider.
David Lagstein, head organizer with the Michigan Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN): “The Republican-led state Senate has not moved on the anti-predatory lending bill for over a year and yet [Republicans] have time to prey on those who have fallen victim to foreclosure to suppress the vote.”
Ha, you sneaky Vixen. You pretend to be getting back to your Real Estate beat, but you’re still shilling for our boy Barack! I love it 🙂
Vern, at least this time we dont have to remind her to add “and your house is still screwed!”
Did you hear that John McCain invented the Blackberry? (but doesn’t know email?)
Did you hear their campaign doesn’t think Palin could go in and run a company like Hewlet-Packard? (but is ready to be President?)
I find it interesting that this post didnt inspire outrage from the readers here. One time the right to vote was so important that any attempt to tamper with voting brought immediate outrage and calls for intervention. Nowdays we expect our vote to not mean anything even when elections are routinely decided by a few votes so we don’t care when anyone tampers with the votes.
In the 2000 election there were charges that in Florida near the election (so that they didnt have time to appeal) anyone with a felony record was taken off the voting lists even though most had their voting rights restored. No outrage there even when Florida went by a few votes and the Supreme Court decided the election. Where was the outrage then? Where is the outrage now?
I kind of expected the eminent domain fanatics to have something to say about this.
**~~crickets chirping~~**
This action by the Michigan GOP is particularly snide – there will again be a record number of resets, notices of default and forclosures next month and another wave of it will hit in Spring 2009. There MIGHT be some outrage in the spring, because that particular wave will be hitting the people who have good credit but who will not be able to continue to pay their mortgages and other debts after their toxic loans reset.
WAMU (Washington Mutual) is in a lot of trouble and this will affect the Irvine/ Orange county area deeply – an estimated 3-4k jobs are at risk. All these folks losing their jobs in the financial industries have mortgages and other debt obligations that they will most likely not be able to meet because of the lack of jobs throughout this country. The dominoes are falling more rapidly now.
Deregulation of the financial markets started in earnest in 2000 and now the full effect of toxic lending practices is coming home to roost. This is a credit bubble that will wipe out even those who thought they were beyond danger. It also doesn’t help to have a predatory government actively trying to strip homeless citizens of their rights.
I don’t see the outrage because these folks losing their homes want a “bailout” and we all know that bailouts are for “losers” and they should just wear a mantle of shame and just go away. Signing a bazillion pages of papers for toxic loans and being reasured that they’ve finally bought into the american dream and assuming all is right with their worlds is their big crime. Now that’s all being stripped – a built in poison pill of exploding toxic loans wiping out the people who thought they could be middle class.
Obama and ACORN are fighting this. I wonder if Bob Barr or McCain have anything to say about this? Looks like GOP politics as usual.
Republicans like Carly Fiorina and Mitt Romney know how to do one thing: fire people. Those two are responsible for over 200k lost jobs. Carly got a $21 million dollar golden parachute for demolishing Hewlett Packard under her watch. McCain is surrounded by these people. True elitists who steal jobs and money from the country at large. They are toxic government.
