Bristol Palin’s “southern borders” aside, I am becoming concerned that we may not actually have a second party any more, judging by what we see coming from the Twin Cities. And not “concern-troll” concerned, but really worried: I don’t actually want to live under one-party Mexican or Soviet-style rule. So I appreciate more than ever Art’s and Sarah’s efforts to beef up the local Libertarian Party, and that elusive Green Queen as well; I do not trust the Democratic Party to run everything without some kind of check.
I mean – OK, leaving aside the question of Bristol Palin’s “southern borders,” have any of you actually been witnessing this gathering of ghouls who still call themselves Republicans? I caught a little last night – Cindy McCain seemed youthful and perky, placed as she was adjacent to W’s embalmed elders. The cameras panned, the cameras yearned, for an interested engaged face, but found only yawns, general sad ennui, and slow applause when demanded. The troops were rallied so to speak LOL by elder non-statesman Fred Thompson, wringing every last drop out of McCain’s POW mishap. Everyone looked solemn and respectful. We were then treated to a quite fanciful hagiography of Ronald Reagan’s supposed “maverick” record. I laughed and laughed, but then felt unaccountably sorrowful; such a long run this party has had since the days of Lincoln, and not all of it despicable. Now I’m looking at it again. There’s that crazy-eyed coot Huckabee!
Aside from the whole kerfluffle over Bristol Palin’s southern so-called “borders,” which I consider irrelevant and off-limits (though also perfectly illustrative of the LIGHT-YEARS of distance GOP orthodoxy occupies from people’s actual real lives) there is the overwhelming look in these people’s eyes that says “Yes, we’ve been in power 8 years and screwed up everything. Please let us go gently into the good night now.” I’m looking at them now, and that’s how they look. I had wanted to write about the really over-the-top police-state tactics that Minnesota cops have been using against local students who planned to protest, and also to celebrate the Ron Paul crowd and their parallel convention of folks who really uphold what Republicans should be about, but who can take their eyes off the pathetic car-crash spectacle of the actual event? Well, maybe for just another drink, but then back to gawk again. In sorrow.
Borders breeched, levees breeched, this party is over. Wooden stake, meet faltering heart. Long live the GOP.
OK I owe you songs.

“Gathering of ghouls and embalmed elders.”
Perfectly descriptive prose!
I was particularly moved by Laura Bush’s speech. She positively appeared to be sedative-enhanced. The poor woman can no longer summon enough energy to pretend like she’s believing her words.
The GOP’s looking terminal to me, too.
Now you guys, I thought she and the rest delivered really good speeches, the best money can buy. These guys should be on television, er … I mean they delivered their lines very well. Palin came across as a regular woman with a typical family who happens to be a Republican and Christian Fundamentalist.
I think she was a great choice! She will energize this campaign and despite this original burst of incredulity over such a counter-intuitive selection I am beginning to see the wisdom in their selection. She is what people will want to talk about making this about personality. The Dems will have to fight harder to get people to focus on the issues.
The Palin choice also contains lots of pitfalls for Democratic politicians too. Comments on either side of her issues means alienating a large swath of voters. Amazingly she claimed saints and sinners in her demographic and it appears may carry them both.
The good news is this is a campaign with two viable presidential candidates once again! You gotta love that!
anonyms –
‘…Republican and Christian Fundamentalist‘
… hence the downfall of the GOP. Sarah Palin is in no way, shape, or form, Hillary Clinton. She’s more like her twin from an evil parallel universe a la Star Trek!

“The GOP’s looking terminal to me, too.”
Actually, it is the democrat party which is terminal. Studies show that Republicans are gaining membership faster than democrats.
One reason for this is that Republicans are less likely to abort their children – and have more children because they have a positive forward looking outlook for the USA.
Hmmmm, SMA, sounds like a Mormon philosophy to me: procreate recklessly til that base becomes REALLY formidable!
“… procreate recklessly …”
Hmmmm, Longboobs, sounds like a Chinese communist philosophy to me: government control of human reproduction til that reduced base becomes REALLY mind numbed!
SMA,
The Republicans are the only ones trying to control human reproduction. I guess they DO seem like a Chinese communist philosophy. Thanks for pointing that out!
