Cheap. Beneath response.
The Dead-enders have yet to hit bottom. Where will it end?
Come on you guys. Lighten up! 😛
SMS
When are the McCan’t 2008 stickers coming out?
Really Vern? “Beneath response” and yet you still felt the need to respond.
Michael,
That’s because Vern exists in a rare “sub-response” dimension!
The sticker is clever – it will be interesting to see who McCain picks as his VP and how quickly the blue side will come up with a sticker ripping that pick too!
SMS,
Seriously, why should we “lighten up” when presented with this sort of racially-charged “joke”.
Like I’ve mentioned here before, Art has allowed a racist to be a part of your blogpen. Consider this the second time it’s been pointed out to you.
Sarah-doh and Art, the reason the sticker is NOT funny is it attacks Obama’s and Biden’s patriotism, which we already know is part of the Republican playbook [ thanks to Fox News, 5% of the voters already believe that Obama is a muslim ] not only is this kind of crap not funny, it’s dangerous. Is this where we want to take the political debate in this country?
SMS –
We’re all adults playing in the political playpen and Crowley’s post is merely a preview of what to expect from the Reps. Besides, we’re all old enough to separate the wheat from the chaff.
I personally find Crowley’s post distasteful and inappropriate. I also learned that Crowley cannot distinguish between tasteful and tasteless.
whatttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lighten up. It’s only a bumper sticker.
Larry,
For you to casually dismiss this as “only a bumper sticker” is really disappointing. Did you not notice that this bumper sticker had a very specific message on it? I really thought you were better than this. Take another shot at it…set aside your partisan bias for a moment, try on some objectivity, and call it out for what it is.
Three words:
Tasteless and childish.
Joe.
You are right. Please accept my apology for my lack of sensitivity to the bumper sticker.Larry
I’ll say it again: lighten up everyone. It’s a joke. That’s my tack and I’m sticking to it!
Seriously, how is it any worse than one saying ‘McCant,’ McLame, McSame,’ or ‘McBush?’ Although, in my humble opinion, those nicknames are much more fitting than Obama bin Biden, because, yeah, I admit it’s a little extreme, but if someone is dumb enough to actually put one of these stickers on their car and someone else sees it, I suggest that the spotter invoke their first amendment rights too!
What’s good for the goose…
SMS
SMS,
Your analogies are utterly lacking in credibility and you know it. And the dance you’re doing is quite pathetic.
Larry, kudos for stepping up with the apology. Classy move on your part.
anon –
I think Larry was being sarcastic.
SMS
#6 Michael I did attempt a non-response response, but I’m starting instead to envision an entire post on the depths modern Republican discourse has sunk to.
“Only a bumper sticker” – what a cop-out. I don’t even know how to answer that. Only a bumper sticker as opposed to what? A shiv in the belly? An RPG? A daisy-cutter? “Mein Kampf” was only a book. OK then, let’s publicize and sell it on the OJ blog!!! Why not?
The folks who made this are comparing two patriotic Americans who have devoted their lives to public service and have been chosen by millions of Americans to lead their country, to a mass-murderering terrorist religious fanatic. Because it sounds clever phonetically, and because they want to keep their fellow Americans scared – thinking and hoping that scared people will keep voting for warmongering Republicans.
Nothing to be done about sh*t like this, except it’s good to know what to expect from the GOP, and it really reflects on the makers of this trash, not on us. It shows the dirtiness of their souls. Crowley’s the only one I can name so far, he’s helping sell it. But Art and Sarah also seem to be morally unmoored, finding it as cute as they do.
First amendment means although these bumper stickers may be pukeworthy, I’ll still defend to the death people’s right to make and sell and sport them, as long as I can accidentally elbow them in the face or knee them in the groin during the scuffle.
OK, serious response in the works.
Larry,
your snippy answer just shows that Republicans are obviously scared. They already know that McCain lost, and they think the only way to prevent his loss is to use 3rd-grade smears. How pathetic.
You will find out that this time around, these cheap and pathetic shots don’t work. They only show that the Republicans are stuck in the last century.
Oh my friggin lord Vern!
Sara, thank you for understanding the joke. Thats why I thought no comment was necessary.
But for ANY progressive to stand up and denounce it? OK… like Das Kapital is a compelling narrative? Like Piss Christ is a creative work? The bar is SO LOW for what has value today that illustration of the obvious by being absurd is too easy.
But I think really that maybe I’m not sensitive enough because I’ve been listening to leftists insult, defame, slander and libel the leader of the country, who has devoted himself to public office and standing up to the special interests of people like you. And I never voted for him.
So maybe I’ll call Obama a murderer for denying funding to the war. Maybe I’ll call him a liar. Maybe I’ll hope a speaker gets up and screams Get Out The Obama! and you can’t open your mouth Vern.
Morally moored? Vern, I am not about to let that slide. Any collectivist hood who wants to treat citizens like pack animals set to work for the secularly ordained principles of entitlement and imposed rights, divides citizens by class warfare, spreads victim mentality to keep others dependent upon the whim of government bureaucracy, has no real love of life. The leftist is anti-life, spurred on a by a brute force mentality that relies on the good nature of the people who get up and go to work every day and want to be left alone. They’re the ones who make it possible for people like you to continue to spread your hatred of “live and let live”.
If I don’t want to be a part of your collective Vern, all the pretty ideas don’t work so well.
So if you want to discuss depths of discourse, Vern, post a new piece and I will take up the sword with you.
To the rest of you…please don’t buy the bumper sticker.
Folks.
Larry did not create the bumper sticker nor the original post.
SMS. I did publicly apologize and that’s the end of that tune.
And yes, several have taken presidential candidates to task. Simply look at the daily newspaper cartoons or the Jib Jab website where you will find political satire and spoofs.
Greetings from Missouri, land of strawmen. I had forgotten that I was the creator of Piss Christ, and that I was selling copies of Das Kapital on this blog. My bad.
Larry, we’re pretty sure you were being sarcastic… but OK. I did miss the Jib Jab video that called Bush or McCain or Clinton or Obama a terrorist mass murderer though.
Crowley, your product is execrable.
Mr. Crowley,
When Mr. Obama becomes President, we’ll see how reverential you remain to the “leader of the country”.
Until then, it was YOU who posted this bumper sticker, and it’s message to those who read this blog rests squarely on your shoulders. Your treatise on leftist political theory, however exaggerated, is irrelevant.
#23,
Give me a break! All Terry did was make us aware about a new sticker. I’m sure that the Dems will be hurling bricks at McCan’t and his VP too. That’s politics.
And why do we have to be reverential to politicians? That’s nuts. They are elected to serve us, not to be worshiped by us.
Art,
Your attempt, like Sarah’s, to equate this “brick” to those like McSame, or criticism about his houses, is about as lame as it gets. It’s not even close and you know it. It’s truly sad to see you try and casually disregard this sort of racially-tinged political dreck.
And when it comes to revering the President, you’ll have to take that up with Mr. Crowley, who clearly feels we owe some sort of deference to the current President.
Um, OK, I had calmed down and was going to write a longer comment, but first I have to respond to Art’s latest – you’ve got it backwards Art, 23 was calling out Crowley on Crowley’s expecting Bush to be treated “reverentially” when we all know how Crowley will treat Pres. Obama and probably did treat Pres. Clinton. And posting on a blog – you should know better than that, Art – it’s never just “making us aware of a new bumper sticker” – it is always making a statement, and it always has a moral dimension. As funny as we like to be sometimes, that’s still true!
OK, this is what I was thinking walking home from the cafe. I want to apologize to Art and Sarah for calling them “morally unmoored.” The sticker is technically kind of funny in a sick way, the unfortunate way those two names sound together.
I got outraged because – like happens every now and then – I had forgotten how common these sleazy, despicable attacks from the right are.
It’s kind of like when a close friend dies, and then for the next few years every once in a while you forget they’re dead, and then you remember, and it hits you all over again.
Or even the 9/11 attacks, thru 2002 and 2003 we’d kind of forget about them, then all of a sudden -wham! – I can’t BELIEVE people actually flew jets into the World Trade Center and killed all those people!
It’s the same with the degradation of our discourse. Ever since 9/11 the right has been equating Democrats and liberals with terrorists and terrorist appeasers and terrorist sympathizers, and it’s often worked for them, for winning elections and pursuing policies that hurt the vast majority of the population. And we get used to it, and I get used to it. Just every now and then, like today, it seems new and horribly grotesque. But it’s really just their same old same old.
I probably won’t write the post after all, there’s not much new here. I imagine Crowley, a sad man in Kansas City enjoying the new-car smell in his SUV, head full of leftist hobgoblins, and the “sword fight” we would have. He would conjure up armies of collectivist conformist hoodlums bent on enforcing equality on the masses through fearsome government bureaucracies, and to come down to his level I would have to paint images of ruthless voracious capitalist pigs with their boots on the throats of the poor working men… and who’s got the freaking time for all that.
“… Any collectivist hood who wants to treat citizens like pack animals set to work for the secularly ordained principles of entitlement and imposed rights, divides citizens by class warfare, spreads victim mentality to keep others dependent upon the whim of government bureaucracy, has no real love of life. The leftist is anti-life, spurred on a by a brute force mentality that relies on the good nature of the people who get up and go to work every day and want to be left alone. They’re the ones who make it possible for people like you to continue to spread your hatred of ‘live and let live.'”
Mr. Crowley, your remarks here are as baffling (read: “nonsensical”) as the “Ameliorate-Bedeliorate” comments you made back in June re: the strawman post. You dance with all of these pretty-sounding words, but you don’t choreograph a coherent sentence.
Now “morally unmoored,” THAT was something noteworthy.
As far as the bumper sticker, I believe that when we want to extinguish a child’s bad behavior, the best thing we can do is ignore it …
I’m gonna laugh all morning Vern. Thank you! Its all in good form.
Longboobs,
LOL…I thought “morally unmoored” rocked too. It accurately portrayed a kind of temporary loss of judgement, like a boat that broke off its anchor.
WHAT, TOO SOON?
#27, thanks, I had that same paragraph copied to post when I saw yours. Well said.
Speaking of public enemy #1, what is with the US military invading Pakistan to get PE#1 now that Musharrif is out? Doesn’t that “invade other countries” thing cut both ways?
Were the Reeps timing PE#1’s capture for the elections? Bummer they didnt see the regime change in Pakistan coming. Oh wait, somebody did, they assinated the opposition – it didn’t stop the opposition though. The dead candidate won so her husband took office, did I get that right?
I’m sorry but I have to agree with Vern, these tired Reep tactics are OLD like your candidate. We’re not buying anymore – on either side of the aisle.
Novella’s really over a freakin bumper sticker.
I am hard pressed to believe that all these people going on and on and on and on and on and on about this sticker would not hoot and squeal or an equally insulting sticker about McCain.
Not saying who I’m for just saying all of you are ridiculous.I’m sure there is something much bigger you can be up in arms about.
Yeah Ok,
We’ll be keeping our eyes open for the type of sticker you mention. And I for one will condemn any bumper sticker that plays to racial, ethnic or religious stereotypes and fears.
Until such a bumper sticker appears, you’re unwillingness to condemn THIS one speaks volumes.
Anon 32,
You are pathetic. There are bigger problems in the world than a stupid sticker. Sorry but its true, you are so mad, seething in fact, that you are posting as anon. Uh ok. I anon am in fact UNWILLING to acknowledge ANY stickers of this or any other kind as anything other than what it is a stupid freakin sticker. Stick that in your self righteous pipe and smoke it.
Its a stupid stinkin sticker people. That some lame a** (the stickers maker) thinks is super duper funny or insulting not sure which nor do I care….well he wins because there are now 33 comments wasted on trash….the novella lives on drat.
Yeah Ok,
You’re right, there ARE big problems in the world. And one of them is racial/ethnic/religious stereotyping and intolerance.
Until you can convince us that the posted bumper sticker has no set of words on it that forms a specific message, you just make yourself look silly.
A blank piece of stickable vinyl is JUST a bumper sticker. This is a bumper sticker with a message. Get your head out of the sand it’s firmly buried in.
Vern –
*ponder* Morally unmoored…
I think we all have our occasional moments, no?
But this wasn’t one. I just thought it was ironic is all. Thanks for the apology.
SMS
ANON you go ahead and fight your nameless fight right here on this blog and feel like a big man/woman. Pretty sure your ranting and raving isn’t gonna make the sticker go bye bye, but thats just conjuncture. Its still a bumper sticker. The insults to candidates intelligence or promiscuity, or faith or whatever or anything else labeled as inappropriate are still just a bumper sticker. But its great that people have their goose got so easily. Guess you must have sand in your eyes if you see me in the sand you must be right next to me.
Peace out whoever you are! Find a new sparing partner my work is done here.
Dear Yeah Ok,
Are you really the great one, incognito?
No!
