TWO! you hear that, TWO exciting Orange County Flag Day events coming up in the next 24 hours, a Republican Party fundraiser tonight, and a nonpartisan picnic put on mainly by Democrats tomorrow! The fiercely nonpartisan Orange Juice Blog wants you to know you’re invited to both, although you may feel more at home at one more than the other. Let us COMPARE and CONTRAST, shall we? It just may be instructive.
The Republican Party’s “Flag Day Dinner Salute” tonight – Friday the 13th – ~LINK!~ will be at the ritzy Hyatt Regency Irvine; tickets are $250 and the money will all go to the Orange County Republican Party. When I checked a couple hours ago, there were STILL A FEW SINGLE SEATS AVAILABLE, so what are you waiting for?
On the other hand tomorrow’s nonpartisan event hosted mainly by Democrats ~LINK!~ will be at the Elks Lodge in Garden Grove in the early afternoon; tickets are $30 and the money will go to two charities for wounded veterans. Well, you can decide tomorrow, there’s room for everybody!
If you go to the Republican’s “Dinner Salute” tonight, you’ll get to hear famed metrosexual Florida Governor and veep wannabee Charlie Crist (pictured at right above.) He will no doubt be introduced warmly by local GOP luminaries such as Mimi Walters, Scott Baugh and Jim Silva!
Tomorrow’s OC Flag Day Event has been strictly nonpartisan since Vietnam vet George Giacoppe (pictured below with Loretta) started it six years ago – local Republican politicians have always been invited (all the way down to Dana Rohrabacher) but have almost always declined. This year they’ll have Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (as usual) and recently re-elected “Jolly Judge John” Nguyen (who’s not a Democrat). Even though politicians like Loretta and candidates like Debbie Cook will be speaking, politics is strictly prohibited and speakers will stick to strictly patriotic subject matter. As you’ll see at the link above there will be Mexican and Vietnamese dancers, hot dogs and apple pie.
I don’t know, I think the contrast between these events says something about the parties but I’m not sure what. I’ll be going to one of them, but since I’m on such a nonpartisan blog I won’t say which one.

SEE YOU THERE, anonyms, santa ana citizen, and everyone else!
Now Vern thats unfair. My Republican bretheryn could have every bit as wild and uninhibited affairs as the non-partisans do, not that they would, but they could.
Damn! What a contrast. If I did not have plans tomorrow I would definitely go to the Democratic event. The money certainly would be better spent. Kudos to the DPOC, which normally can’t get its act together, for putting on such a fine annual event.
I hate to say, Art, good point there in your last sentence.. I’m not sure it’s a DPOC thing. Giacoppe, an HB resident (and yes a DPOC member) works his butt off from January to June each year to put this together and is always pestering folks for help. I have to admit I haven’t helped at all the last two years, but when I saw your post the other day about the GOP event, I suddenly became proud and appreciative of this one. One thing I know, Costco is donating hot dogs and other stuff.
Vern,
I have never been prouder to be a Costco member!
Vern, my morning meeting went long and by the time I got there the medics were eyeing me with hostility in case I asked them to take my blood. It looked like you’ld had a great event. I was surprised at how much room the Elks club had there. So next time I’ll be luckier and make it when the event is going on, ok?
