Is it cruel to place an elephant inside a huge blow-up bubble? Apparently animal rights activists think so. The Santa Ana Discovery Science Center angered the animal rights lobby when they announced that as part of their annual Bubblefest exhibit they were going to have a fellow blow a gigantic bubble around an actual live elephant, according to the L.A. Times.
But really, is this a cruel thing to do to a rental elephant? I cannot think of any kids that would not be thrilled to have a bubble blown around them. Why is it so horrible to do this to an elephant?
Apparently the idea for this may have come from Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido, who according to a pajarito, recently waxed poetic at a meeting about elephants. He is said to be a huge fan of the elephant ride at the Santa Ana Zoo.
But Pulido did not come to the defense of the Discovery Science Center as they came under attack from fringe animal lovers. Which is typical of him.
I personally don’t understand this ruckus. I wonder if these animal lovers give a damn about the young people dying in our city as a result of gang violence? Somehow I doubt it. Animals matter more to these folks than people do. Memo to animal rights crazies – animals are NOT humans. Not even close.
I have to agree with you on this one Art….the Democratanimal crazies have gone too far!
“I wonder if these animal lovers give a damn about the young people dying in our city as a result of gang violence? Somehow I doubt.”
While I don’t claim to know what affect a Soap Bubble has on an Elephant, I fail to understand the need for such drama in your statement,
rick,
Chalk it up to frustration. I know several of these animal rights activists in Santa Ana who equate their dogs with our kids. It is quite annoying.
Animals are not people. Period. People who spend their lives fretting about them tend to overlook humans in the process. At least that is what I have perceived over the years. I think they are wrong to do so.
Probably a fire hazard. If that elephant happened to pass gas while encased in the bubble a concentration of encapsulated methane would exist and that could create quite an explosion if an ignition source was available. Even without an ignition source, the elephant would be at risk having to breathe that encapsulated air and methane mix and could have fallen over and hurt someone. Truth be told, this little exercise was probably squelched by Homeland Security.
Art! At first I thought this was a really cool metaphor for the Bush administration. You know, how Bush, Condi, et al. live in a bubble, only listening to each other and folks who agree with them while the rest of us live out here in the reality-based community.
But you’re serious. They put actual elephants in actual bubbles. Wow.
“the idea for this may have come from Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido”
I am no fan of Pulido but come on Pedroza give me a break. The levels that you are willing to sink to try and take a shot at him are getting ridiculous. You are quickly becoming more and more of a laughing stock with each post.
Maybe you should educate yourself and take care of your children so they won’t end up shooting your neighbor’s dog.
I’m sure some across-the-border circus would be happy to hire you to parade around a toy monkey on your back for the delight of other ignorant parents and their children. What makes it okay for people in your world to take wild animals from their habitat and make them into “funny exhibits”?
In other neighborhoods children would be educating you on such cruel displays. Maybe you should be questioning those very values you seem to dismiss.
And, for anyone who decides to have babies, take care of them yourselves. It is not our responsibility to raise your children!
Mary
Nope animals are not humans, not even close. Animals are WAY better than humans. And if I had to make a choice you or the animal, guess which animal’d be thanking me. Hint: it wouldn’t be you.
#6,
I would have suggested putting Pulido in a bubble, but who wants to see such a small bubble?
#8,
Thanks for proving my point.
Flowerzzz,
Animals do not sign up to be exhibited as viewing pleasure of ignorant audiences.
Art,
My pets have more intelligence than your species.
If your children really matter that much, move to a neighborhood with excellent schools so your children can evolve. Maybe then they will be able to educate you on the importance of animals on this planet.
Mary
Mary,
Of course animals are important. We could not BBQ without them!
Art,
Would you like fries with that? And a soda, perhaps? –you know to wash all the crap down?
Mary
A while back Pulido was put in a bubble with a bunch of school kids at the discovery museum. I saw it on cable. Guess what? It wasn’t a very tall bubble because Pulido and the school kids were pretty much the same height.
Richard Ramirez would have loved the elephant in the bubble!
OK Mary take all the animals out of the zoo right now! And we’ll put them in your back yard.
Quit being such a drama queen – you sound like my mother, love her I do BUT she thinks her damn cats are more important then people. I have 3 dogs and a cat abe I LOVE my animals but if it was between them and my kids – my kids would win…sorry!
These animals were not “caught” in the wild for exhibit purposes…they were injured or at risk of being injured, or because some jack ass thought he could have a pet bear or something.
They can not be released out into the wild, the elephant would be harmed exactly HOW by having a giant soap bubble around it?
Flowerzzz and Art,
This may give you a little insight as to why elephants should not be paraded as funny exhibits:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/02/0221_030221_elephantvocal1.html
Here is an excerpt:
“…[elephants] are as emotional and attached to family members as human beings are, and are very much aware of the experience of others.”
Well then Mary the elephant would have LOVED to have a bubble blown around it – as any human would. You are ridiculous….if an animal is being abused then steps should be taken. Blowing a bubble ’round an elephant is hardly abuse.
