SAUSD considering new science books, but there is more to the story

“Parents in Santa Ana Unified School District have a chance to review proposed textbooks and other study materials before the school board considers adopting the items,” according to the O.C. Register.

As is typical, the Register’s SAUSD reporter, Fermin Leal, did not ask ANY questions. He just ran the district’s press release.

Why aren’t these materials available for review online? Why do we have to go look at them? They will be “on display for review from Jan. 7-18, outside of district’s Visual and Performing Arts Department at 1601 E. Chestnut Ave.”

What about parents who cannot read English? How are they being accommodated?

These materials are rather important. “The district is seeking public input on the kindergarten through grade 5 MacMillan/McGraw-Hill science materials.”

According to the International Mathematics and Science Assessment “the available data suggest that the performance of U.S. fourth-graders in both mathematics and science was lower in 2003 than in 1995 relative to the 14 other countries that participated in the studies.”

“Reviewers are invited to submit feedback to the Elementary Educational Services Department via email at Rosa.Bernal@sausd.usor by filling out the form located in the display area.” Does this mean there will be a computer at the site? What about parents who don’t know how to use computers?

Here is another question to ponder, how did the SAUSD go about selecting the books in question? What was their selection criteria? Why doesn’t Leal ever ask such questions – and why does he still have a job?
