The L.A. Times published an interesting story today about how the Democratic presidential candidates are reaching out to Latino voters in California. Here are a few excerpts:
Hillary Rodham Clinton has munched on tacos in East Los Angeles and Barack Obama has joked around on Southern California’s top Spanish-language radio program “Piol
“I’m not going to vote for someone just because they go to King Taco.”
But if my name is Art Pedroza I will because Michele Martinez tells me to.
“I’m not going to vote for someone just because they go to King Taco.”
I have been saying this all along. It really says something about us as Latinos if we vote this way just because some politicians show up to King Taco, gland hand and pose for pictures with us. To quote Hillary’s husband, “Give me a break.”
And King Taco is gross anyway. I can’t believe that there isn’t a better tacqueria in East LA for this kind of thing.
Poster 1,
Michele does not tell me how to vote. If you knew anything you would know I did not even back her last year.
But I do respect that Michele is backing Obama.
I don’t know how anyone can back Hillary Clinton. She is absolutely disgusting.
It is so condescending to think that anyone would support you because you eat tacos. What an insult!
Art said …
“It is so condescending to think that anyone would support you because you eat tacos. What an insult!”
Dude, are you saying Latinos will vote for Sen. Clinton because she dines at Taco King?
I have to agree with you there, Art.
It would be really dumb for any of us to vote for someone just because they eat tacos like “us”. And, what makes these guys think we’ll vote for them because they carry a bible like “us”? It is all, just, so demeaning to think “we” would vote that way.
Makes you wonder why they keep repeating this behavior.
Obviously you (Art) nor “Adriana” don’t know how popular the King Taco franchise is up in LA, which isn’t much of a surprise seeing that both of you are from behind the Orange Curtain, but then again, so am I.
I think one of my brothers who attendend Cal State LA turned me on to King Taco in East LA. Ever been there on a Friday or Saturday night? How about any weekend day?The place is an absolute zoo, and that is the beauty of it. I challenge either of you to name one eatery similar to this one. Tacos Mexico and Taqueria De Anda are as bland as Irvine. Now that is gross and disgusting!
King taco has the best sopes and tacos anywhere. The broiled chicken ain’t that bad either.
I agree that it is idiotic to vote for someone just because they happen to eat a couple of tacos in a traditionally Mexican neighborhood. I belive Hillary went there for the exposure more than the tacos. I equate her appearance there like visiting Olvera Street(ad naseum). It is a sybolic appearance intended to connect with voters in East LA.
I also believe that your fear and disgust for Hillary is a carry-over from your republican days. Get over it. See the light. Quit blaming the Clintons for all the country’s ills. Either that or you have a fear and disgust for intelligent women like Hillary. Try and get over your “machismo” then.
BTW, I voted absentee for Richardson already, yes, even after he dropped out. No, I did not throw away my vote. The Democratic contenders are going to have to try harder and resonated with me better.
So back to the drawing table Clinton, Edwards, Kucinich, Obama, …
cqt96, I have been to King Taco a few times. I have been to one just south of downtown LA and to the one in Pasadena, where I used to live. Granted, the sopes were pretty good… I just didn’t care for the rest of it. Actually, some of the best tacos come from the taco truck vendors in my opinion, but that probably wouldn’t make as great of a photo op.
I don’t sense the “machismo” in Art’s ranting, but I do think that Hillary would not be where she is without her marriage to Bill. Had she divorced him after the Lewinsky matter, I think that some people might have more respect for her. I also think that it isn’t really fair for her to count her tenure as first lady of Arkansas and the US as years of public service since these really aren’t real jobs in the sense that she had to run for the position or go through the process of getting appointed. Basically, she had these opportunities because of her marriage to Bill.
Adriana,
Do you understand the concept of SUPPORT? What makes you think Bill Clinton made it to the White House on his own? And, are you saying that a woman cannot achieve the same successes as a man? Don’t you think it took more strength and integrity for Clinton to STAY in her marriage and then go on to run for public office? She is one incredibly strong woman. Maybe you are projecting yourself.
Mary, I understand what support is. I don’t doubt that Hillary has assisted Bill Clinton in his political ambitions. I do think that she needs to admit that she got to where she is with his help though. This experience that she is claiming to have is her experience being married to and connected to her husband Bill Clinton.
How can Hillary Clinton claim that she’s an independent woman taking positions on whatever issue and then claim that her experience continues in the Arkansas governor’s mansion and in the White House as first lady? I would be more impressed with a female running for president who had a husband not closely tied to the position she is seeking. Personally, I’m sick of nepotism in this country, whether is comes from a father to a son or a husband to his wife.
And yes, I think that it took strength for Hillary to stay in her marriage, but I believe that this is more of a political partnership than a marriage. Her husbands affairs have already been documented and archived for us, and I think that wherever she pursues her romantic relationships has yet to be revealed to the public at large.
Imagine a second Clinton presidency where Bill Clinton decides to have another affair or where Hillary’s love interest is revealed. Such an incident would be so distracting, and I think that it could happen because as many have observed, cheaters never really change.
