Claudio Gallegos has presented his argument for Tom Daly to replace Chris Norby on the Board of Supervisors. My problem with that is that his party does not appear to be even looking for a minority candidate. Gallegos argues that Daly is the man and as such he should be handed the seat. He points to Daly
And many people are leery of those who push affirmative action. The thought that people out there still purport the idea that someone should be in a position of leadership, power, management, etc. based on ethnicity is backwards and a step back for those actually trying to achieve. If you are qualified and deserve something, you will obtain it, especially in California. There is too long a record of black, latino, asian, anglo and others who have made it here to make such a short sighted argument, Art. Just weak really.
Poster 1,
Your use of the phrase “affirmative action” implies that there are no qualified minority candidates in the 4th district. That is simply untrue.
Let me put this another way, can Daly serve well in this district? Probably. But should he be handed the seat without even considering whether or not there are any viable minority candidates in this district? No.
Your comments just serve to illustrate my point. The Democrats are not any friendlier to minority candidates than the Republicans. In truth, they want Latinos to vote for their candidates. But they are not interested in getting behind Latino candidates.
And please don’t point to the Latino Democrats on the Santa Ana City Council. They are inept, with the exception of Michele Martinez. And they are both anti-poor and anti-immigrant.
Art, your agenda and crusade against Norby is finally revealed; Rose Espinoza.
Out of all the latino/ina’s you could have picked, you choose the over inflated rating of a woman who has absolutely no clue as to what she is doing? She is the epitome of igonrant when it comes to politics let alone the county. And the position of Mayor in La Habra is cerimonial at best and is rotated among the council annually like you rotate frozen chicken.
Rose is one of the nicest persons you could ever meet, but unfortnately she is not up to the level of Tom Daly. In fact here is a link to the liberl oc with some very insightful comments regarding Rose. http://www.theliberaloc.com/2007/12/12/espinoza-elected-mayor-of-lahabra/#comments
Another issue is for everything that is Latino that comes out of you. I could care less about your geneology or pedigree in this venue. I care about ideas not race, as you are. The advancement of someone, other than a native american (not the casino owning kind) is reckless at best and dangerous at worst.
Just look at what happened when race was the reason for electing an entire city council in South Gate, go to and scroll down to item #3 “The Saga of South Gate”
http://www.samquinones.com/antonios_gun.asp
Here is a quote from his book: “South Gate became a cautionary tale about the emergence of Latino political power. ” and “Albert Robles, a Latino Joe McCarthy, used Mexican immigrants to take control of this Southern California suburb.”
Anytime we hold skin color over substance as a reason to elect someone we are in danger abrogating our rights as they did in South Gate.
Poster 3,
Why do you assume all Latino politicians are corrupt? Yes, the ones in Santa Ana are a disaster. But you should not judge everyone by their poor standard.
I would by the way be happy to back Joe Dunn for Ward 3, against Carlos “Space Commander” Bustamante. I prefer ward specific elections, and Dunn is a good match for Ward 3.
Art,
I dream of a world that is color blind.
I was raised that way, in a world that wasn’t yet that way, but I didn’t know better until later in life.
While I understand (not well however) the need for some to feel prejudiced, I find it to be counterproductive to define anyone by their race, sexual preference, or any other specialty group, affirmatively or otherwise. I find that when someone brings it up as a prerequisite for a conversation, they lose many listeners. They also fan the emotional flames of prejudice and actually are counter productive to having a world that is, color blind.
But then that is only my opinion and feelings.
I choose to see each individual as their own person, judged on actions and integrity, not on how they appear or who their parents were. Besides, I had no choice in my parents, if you did, I got cheated!
Carl,
This has nothing to do with color my friend. I just think it is very funny that the Democrats pander so much to minorities when they really have no intention of supporting minority candidates, not when they have a white guy ready to go.
Why don’t they be honest with us and just admit that they think Latinos are inept and they rather go with one great white hope after another?
If you ask me, Daly could well be the next Umberg.
Art or poster number 4 if you prefer; why are you such a race hustling poverty pimp?
Now would that suffice as an appropiate response to a guy who could extrapolate that I assume that all latinos are corrupt from my previous post?
I gave you an example of what happens when people go with race as a determinate factor in voting for someone. But then again when all you have to go on is race in your discussion or inneuendo, such as the Norby lies you told and failed to retract, well I guess its to be expected.
No one thinks Lations are inept, we just think you are, lately.
And you call others racists?
Art, your political ignorance destroyed virtually any chances for your people (referring to your separatism) to be treated with any respect.
The Democratic Party, like with many races in Orange County, is not “ready to go” with any candidate. Just look at the upcoming First District Supervisor’s race.
Rose Espinoza has already run for Supervisor. In fact, Frank Barbaro made attempts to rally support for Espinoza’s candidacy, especially among Democratic LATINO leaders in OC, but obviously the Latino leaders were not convinced of her viability and Espinoza did not get many votes beyond La Habra.
Regardless of race, Tom Daly is the most viable Democratic candidate in the 4th Supervisorial District.
Art, or poster #4, did you forget where the approval button is on your comment moderator page? I responded to you about 30 minutes ago. Don’t tell me my response got lost?
If you took a break no worries. If it has been rejected let me know why.
Thanks
Gustavo,
Aguirre would be a terrific choice! I am not enamored by Rosie, my point is that we owe it to the people of the district to at least look at who else can run besides Daly.
BTW, I tried to find info on Daly online. Not much there. I doubt many people in the district really know much about him.
hydrangea,
I went to the store with my four year old. Just got back.
“We owe it to the people”? Who is we? Art, Art, and Art? Why don’t you worry about finding candidates in Santa Ana! As for not knowing about Tom Daly, ask the 30,000 in Anaheim that re-elected him their Mayor or the 273,000 throughout Orange County that elected him as the Clerk-Recorder.
what ever happened to the best person for the job despite of race. in pedrozas world we toss that out the window because it has to be a latino
