The O.C. Register routinely ignored disgraced O.C. Sheriff Mike Carona’s misdeeds. In fact, Carona favored their reporters and would not speak to the L.A. Times reporters because the latter actually reported on his corruption.
Today the Register reporters finally unloaded on Carona, a day late so to speak, with a comprehensive look at the fall of his crooked empire. It was actually a pretty good article. I just wish the Register editors had not backed off of Carona all these years. Thank God the Times and the O.C. Weekly never backed off!
My favorite excerpt from the article is “As the saga drags on, Carona’s son worries about losing both parents to federal prison, friends said. The words Carona uttered 10 years ago
A very comprehensive article indeed. It contains significant lessons about management style and power. Increasingly it looks like there are few people who achieve positions of power who do not succumb to being heaped with praise and admiration by their constituents and begin to really believe that they must indeed be special, for everyone is treating them that way. When everyone in the room is in awe by your presence there are few who can deal with such power in the long run, it seems. Can any man or woman withstand the opportunistic temptations that are thrust at them in such an environment? Not to excuse succumbing, but rather to predict the highly probable outcome.
