Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce retreats!

The Santa Ana City Council slipped off the hook tonight, as the director of the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, Mike Metzler, asked them to remove item 4A from the Council’s Redevelopment Agency agenda. That item was a request by Metzler for $82,000 in taxpayer money.

Metzler wanted the money so he could continue to publish his self-serving newsletter, the CityLine. However, we publicized the fact that the CityLine includes endorsements of the Chamber’s preferred City Council and School Board candidates. It is absolutely egregious to waste taxpayer’s money on such propaganda!

I can only hope that this issue will now go away forever. As my co-blogger Sean Mill pointed out, you can now read the CityLine online, on the Chamber’s website. If Metzler wants to play publisher, he ought to sell ads and raise the money to print the CityLine. Santa Ana’s taxpayers should not be stuck with the bill!

By the way, the Santa Ana City Council did not throw me or any of my co-bloggers off our city commissions tonight. That was probably a wise idea, now that the AP has picked up the story that L.A. Times reporter Jennifer Delson broke today. For now, we will continue to serve the public both as city commissioners and as local political bloggers.
