There is some good news today regarding the issue of immigration, “A coalition of human rights and labor groups have begun a campaign to counter what they call the “vile and vicious” rhetoric of the anti-illegal immigration movement and “recapture the civility of discussion and debate” on the issue of comprehensive immigration reform,” according to the O.C. Register.
Here are a few excerpts from the article:
The campaign, called Campaign for a United America, launched Wednesday with the release of its Web Site. As part of their work, the coalition will give tool-kits to community groups that include sample letters to the editor and instructions on constructive meeting techniques.
The campaign’s Web Site includes sections on what the campaign considers people who have had either a positive or negative influence on the debate. The section with negative profiles includes Orange County’s Jim Gilchrist, president of the Minuteman Project.
Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the FAIR, a nonprofit group working to stop illegal immigration, is also profiled. Mehlman rejects the site’s portrayal of him.
FAIR opposed immigration reform in the Senate earlier this year because, Mehlman said, it was equal to amnesty. The group supports increased border security and deportation of illegal immigrants.
While we are on the subject of immigration, I found out this week that the reason KFI did not cover the story about the OJ3 (the three Orange Juice bloggers who were targeted for removal from their city commissions, by a censorship-minded Santa Ana City Council) is that the folks at KFI don’t like my views on immigration. That is unbelievable – and ridiculous.
The fact is, I don’t tell my other bloggers what to write about, and several of them disagree with my views on immigration. Oh well, probably a good thing. Just look at how Red-faced County/OC Blog editor Matt “Jubal” Cunningham got flamed the other day on the John & Ken Show, on KFI. Cunningham and other politicos stepped in it by defending a Catholic monsignor who covered up for molester priests, which you can read about at the OC Weekly’s Navelgazing blog. That sort of press I could do without!
Fantastic. Anything to counter the xenophobic, uninformed voice of the ignorant.
There you go, the beginning of the end
