Having the inside of your house painted can be very traumatic, especially when you/they move your “stuff” and you needs weeks to find it. As I attempt to bring my office back into operation I found the following campaign statement by former president Franklin Delano Roosevelt that I now share with you.
This quote is attributed to his campaign speech in Boston MA on October 30th 1940.
“And while I am talking to you mothers and fathers, I give you one more assurance. I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again: Your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars.”

And for Juice readers.
How many Americans died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941? 2,400
How many American GI’s died in the Second World War? 406,000
How many Americans died on 9-11-01 in the Twin Towers attack? 2,986
How many American GI’s have died in the GWOT in Afghanistan and Iraq? 3,835
Think about FDR’s “assurance” as you question the actions taken by president Bush.
Iraq was not behind 9-11 no matter how hard Dick Cheney and company try and push that belief.
Before you say that the Germans did not bomb Pearl Harbor let me remind you that they had an alliance with Japan and thus were also the enemy when Japan bombed us.
Saddam had no such alliance with Al Quaida. The only place you could find Al Quaida prior to our invasion was in the Kurdish region of Iraq. Let me remind you that the Kurdish region was protected by the U.S. and thus Saddam could not go in and root out Al Quaida.
Hi Larry, I respect your history knowledge but you always cite WW II stats while skipping the war that the men (and women) of your generation fought–Vietnam. Recently I visited the headquarters of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund where plans for the 25th anniversary commemoration and to raise $75MM have been underway to honor the 58,259 Americans who fell in Vietnam.
Here are some other presidential quotes:
“You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.” –Abraham Lincoln
“You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly. So you could have a beginning of a disintegration that would have the most profound influences.” –Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1954
“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” –John F. Kennedy, 1961
“We are not about to send American boys nine or ten thousand miles away from home to do what Asian boys ought to be doing for themselves.” –Lyndon B. Johnson, 1964
“You can count on us.” –Richard M. Nixon, 1973
“Today, America can regain the sense of pride that existed before Vietnam.” –Gerald R. Ford, 1975
Quang.
My reference to FDR was his emphasis that our young men WOULD NOT engage in a foreign war which is the current argument being posed by many Dem’s.
Yes, another 58,000 plus American patriots made the ultimate sacrifice in another war under another Democrat president named LBJ.
Inside comment. I proudly display my copy of “A Sense of Duty” along with other books from my collection.
Thank you for your service.
Sorry, Larry, but you got this one wrong in two very important ways.
1. We were attacked by a foreign country (Japan), so it wasn’t a foreign war, it was our war.
2. We attacked those responsible for 9/11-Al Queda-in Afghanistan, of which nearly everyone approved. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.
Quang – First off they have already
said that the people in WWII are
the real heroes, the real “greatest
generation” according to Tom Brokaw! Larry is totally correct
about that comparison. Secondly,
why is it that nobody understands
that “the enemy” can cross borders
like Hamas from Palestine, like
Hezbollah from Lebanon, like Al
Quida from Saudi Arabia and all
points around the place they bend
down to every day, twice a day!
Mecca? No, to the place they make
those EID’s that get sent to Iraq
from Syria and Iran! Get a grip
wise guys! You are oh so smart
until it comes to “common sense”.
The “War on Terror” has no borders
…just ask those Australians that
got blown up in Bali! Not bad
beaches there for terrorists!
The President has the authority as Commander and Chief to direct the military and Congress has the authority to fund those actions the Commander and Chief has taken.
The President was reelected and the Congress has funded every bullet and bomb each and every year.
For my friends who don’t understand the American way and worship the anti-war god, you have my permission to immigrate to any other country with history of neutrality like Mexico, Lebanon, or Switzerland, or any place you like.
Student of history.
FIVE DAYS BEFORE the November 5th 1940 presidential election FDR ASSURED us that our boys would NOT be sent into any foreign war.
The war was already underway on Oct 30th 1940. Speak about blown campaign promises.
Mr. Student.Help me out with your knowledge of geography.
Where are Okinawa, New Guinea and Tinian or Normandy and Bastogne?
Readers. I just deleted a comment which preceeded Cook’s thread due to fowl language that will not be tolerated. You are welcome to disagree with any of our posts but not with four letter words that my dogs can’t hear.

Re your 10/25 Orange Juice Blog critical of FDR — please publish my reply
FDR should not be faulted for stating “our boys wouldn’t be sent into any FOREIGN WAR.” But, he might be criticized for waiting until 12/7/41, – the destruction of our Pacific Fleet & loss of almost 3,000 at Pearl Harbor. Then, IT BECAME OUR WAR. He’d kept his word longer than many feel was justified. Tho Nazi U-boats had been sinking our “Lend-Lease shipping” to England & the USSR before 12/7, we stayed out of it. And tho Jap atrocities continued through the 30’s via its unbelievably brutal invasions of China, etc (e.g., 240,000 primarily women & children in the “Rape of Nanking”, etc.) – FDR waited.
Many today feel G.W. Bush waited too long (i.e., till 9/11) to do what Bush Sr. should have finished re Sadam Hussein in “Desert Storm” – considering Radical Islam’s many “pre-9/11” acts of terrorism.
In this atomic age with WMD’s in the hands of No. Korea & other likely enemies,(Iran?) we no longer have the “luxury” of waiting for more “9/11’s”.
PS: An example of preemptive military action: Israel might not be around today if on 6/5/67, it didn’t preempt Nasser’s scheduled “pan-Arab” war to destroy it. Also, Israel’s knocking out Hussein’s atomic facility outside Baghdad was beneficial, tho condemned by the US & the UN at the time.
Larry –
As the author of your deleted message let me just say that you are a censor with no spine.
Readers, the deleted message used one (1) profanity after an exhaustive, historically annotated analysis of the manner in which Larry’s post misstates and ignores fundamental, basic history in a post which seeks to compare FDR with Bush regarding FDR’s statement he would not enter into foreign wars.
The offending word was used as an exclamation point of exasperation following a lengthy exposition of the historic facts and the specific manner in which Larry was deceptive and misleading in his post. I closed my post telling Larry “YOU OUGHT TO BE (DELETED) ASHAMED OF YOURSELF.”
He still should. The Orange Juice Blog has never deleted entire posts, let alone entire posts challenging the integrity of the official Orange Juice Bloggers posts, because of a single profanity. The profanity, if not included, is simply deleted or, like every magazine (Time, Newsweek, etc.) does, uses asterisks (Like this, for E******)to delete the word.
Larry was not offended by the single word, he was offended because he was being called out on his uneducated propaganda. And he was afraid of the message, not the single word.
Larry, you should still be ashamed of yourself. You are a censor, without any values of freedom or free speech. Orange Juice Blog, you should be ashamed of yourselves for stooping to have a censor such as Larry as part of your blog, which celebrates the open and free exchange of ideas. His ideas are welcome to the debate: His censorship of entire opposing ideas under the guise of a single offending word cheapens your debate and the integrity of your blog.
Nuff said.
Poster 10,
You know we don’t allow the F word in our posts. I generally do just repost them without the F word. However, Larry chose not to, and that is his right as the author of the post you responded to.
Why not just post using asterisks? That way you won’t have a problem. I do welcome critics, as does Larry, but we do ask that you not use the F word. I think that is a reasonable request. Thanks.
Oh Yeah, Larry: “Fowl” language is that of a chicken
(Fowl (foul) n. pl. fowl or fowls 1. Any of various birds of the order Galliformes, especially the common, widely domesticated chicken (Gallus gallus)
You meant “Foul” (foul (foul)
adj. foul·er, foul·est
1. Offensive to the senses; revolting.
2. Having an offensive odor; smelly.
3. Rotten or putrid: foul meat.
4.
a. Full of dirt or mud; dirty. See Synonyms at dirty.
b. Full of impurities; polluted: foul air.
5. Morally detestable; wicked: foul deeds.
6. Of a vulgar or obscene nature: foul language.
So, learn to spell when you choose to learn history.
So what you are really saying is Larry is foul excrement?
i am a first amendment advocate and i also believe that self-censorship is a personal responsibility. you not only marginalize your argument but also yourself if you have to fall back on a poor choice of words to express yourself.
this blog is an affirmation of our right to freedom of opinion and expression. it has demonstrated its responsibility to the public by not allowing profanity.
allowing uncontrolled speech will change the character of this blog. if you don;t like the rules, then create your own blog and use all the foul language you want. jim madison

I don’t understand your logic! Joyce

My reply to Joyce follows:
Good morning Joyce.
There are times when we must change course. Over the past five years President Bush has been beat up for sending our sons and daughters to fight this unconventional war by many Democrat’s who post on the Juice Blog. My point is that their hero, FDR, did the same thing even after he gave America his assurance that it would not happen five days before he was re-elected.
Hopefully this answers your question.

Larry misstate’s historical facts? No problem. Please show us where I used false facts in my post.
Ask my fellow bloggers. I rarely scrutinize comments before they are added no less once they appear on this blog. You can verify that fact with Art and the other members of this team. The people I hang with know in advance not to use fowl language around me and respect my position. As a reader of our blog you know the rules. Re-submit your argument without resorting to curse words and I will respond. And if you are right I will also acknowledge your facts. Was that asking too much?
Are you angry with my position and can only refute my thoughts as you elected to do?
My response to Joyce, (found above), indicates that we live in different times requiring different strategies and tactics.
Let me share some additional facts of non-traditional terrorist activities against Americans, the most recent of which occured on Bill Clinton’s watch.
We can go back to 1983, 1984 Beirut during the Reagan years followed by 1985 Madrid and Rome.
Fast forward to the attack in 1993 at the World Trade Center in NYC, 1996 Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, the 1998 attacks on US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and in 2000 when the USS Cole was attacked in Yemen. Should we ignore these brutal attacks because we can’t put a direct finger on any specific nation? Countries that harbor terrorists get a pass. Is that your position?
It’s not mine!
Did I make up these events? Were Americans killed? The fact that the terrorists did not have a specific homeland does not preclude our responsibility to protect Americans and going after those responsible wherever they may hide. It is sad that our State Department and president have treaties and other unspecified relationships which tie the hands of our military such as Iran’s providing arms to the terrorists through Iraq. In addition Syria, Saudi Arabia and Russia each get a pass.
This GWOT is well above my pay grade but the facts I have posted can all be verified by multiple sources.
Larry Gilbert has nothing to be ashamed of.
PS: I do not recall ever seeing you at the El Toro cemetary whenever their is a memorial service for our fallen. Nor do I believe you ever attended any of our annual prayer breakfasts for Firefighters and Police Officers.

You are a clown.
Thanks for adding your valuable thoughts to this post.
Jim Madison 9:46 a.m.
Thank you! Well stated.
“Larry misstate’s historical facts? No problem. Please show us where I used false facts in my post.”
I did.
You deleted the whole message instead of deleting a single word. It is thus disingenuous to pretend it never happened.
You also know nothing of my politics, so do not pretend you do. You make all these issues about party (Democrat vs. Republican), as opposed to issue. That further cheapens the debate.
Mr. Madison: I would venture to say that I am far more literate than you, with a substantially larger vocabulary to choose from when expressing myself. This is not intended as an attack, and not meant to be any more disrespectful that your post, but rather an educated observation. I do, however, find it profoundly presumptuous of you to comment upon a post you never read, the size and depth of which you can only speculate, and reach a conclusion as to my need to “fall back on a poor choice of words to express yourself.” The word was very carefully chosen. Those who study the language do not have the puritanical approach to the language you advocate, nor do the vast majority of the people in the world. I do not promote foul language, nor was my post peppered with it, as you somehow have been led to believe.
When you state “this blog is an affirmation of our right to freedom of opinion and expression. it has demonstrated its responsibility to the public by not allowing profanity” you miss the entire point: Responsibility to the public would be to remove the sole offending word, allow the content to be heard, and to advise the poster of the rule. Larry did not choose to do that, and it was not about “responsibility” to Larry. It was about deleting a post that he could not address point by point. That is the censorship issue, and you are hardly a first amendment advocate if you espouse such censorship at a blog for thinking adults.
Did you beat your chest and rend your garments when Dick Cheney used the same word on the floor of the Senate during public debate? How about when George W. Bush used the word repeatedly in a 1999 interview with Tucker Carlson in Talk Magazine? I’ll bet your criticism and indignation was deafening.
Juice readers.
Unless they specifically authorize me to include their names in email responses to my posts I intentionally protect the source.
Poster #9 has just requested my including his name along with his comments.
Dr. Howard Garber, is the Producer & Host of ACRU Report
a cable TV program produced in Anaheim. I have appeared on several of his programs with Ron Winship, Producer of the Cutting Edge-a talk show.
Howard is a very strong advocate of the state of Israel. He was alkso very active in the Recall of CA Chief Justice Rose Byrd.

Go for it. Resend your prior (deleted)post without inclusion of offenseive words and I will respond to each and every point.
I may have practiced “duck and cover” during WWII but I don’t duck today.
Sure Larry, next time I have a spare hour to pull up all the stats and write it AGAIN. Your blog doesn’t allow the writer to keep a copy, only the blogger. You of course could keep a copy once sent, but you chose to be a censor and delete it. Then you chose to take the time to mislead people regarding the contents of the post, and made it appear like it was laced with profanity. Like I am going to trust you to have the integrity to post it and not delete it.
By the way, both of my parents were both officers in the army in World War II – They did not trot out their service every time they wanted to garner some integrity or bolster their arguments. Thanks for your service to the country (seriously), but why don’t you let your opinions stand for themselves?
At the request of Dr. Howard Garber I am reposting his comments that were sent to me via email.

While you cannot locate or recreate one comment I spend hours researching and posting multiple stories on this blog. I did not make a copy of your comments nor do I retain copies of my own.
Just yesterday I had to recreate one post four times as AOL kept cutting me off before I could save the text.
I was sincere in my offer to respond to your arguments. Perhaps next time you will refrain from vulgarity and simply state your case. This will assure you of seeing your position posted and my reply to follow as I have time.
While we do our best to respond to all threads most of us either have full time jobs or are involved in activites outside the Orange Juice.
As such you should not expect to get instantaneous responses from our team members.
