Don Daucher teaching at Western State College of Law

The tale of Erwin Chemerinsky’s firing and rehiring at the new UCI School of Law has been leading the headlines this week, but I recently heard from another attorney who is a prominent figure in Orange County politics.

I received an email a few days ago announcing that Don Daucher, who is married to former state legislator Lynn Daucher, and is a very successful attorney in his own right, has retired from the law firm he was working at and will now be a professor at the Western State University, College of Law.

According to Western State, “Professor Daucher received his B.S. from the University of Rochester and his J.D. from Duke University. He was formerly Managing Partner at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker and was a Director of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation. He will be teaching Civil Procedure I.”

Daucher reminded me in an email today that he is an alumnus of Duke University, where Chemerinsky was working up until his hiring, firing and rehiring by UCI.

I first met Daucher during his wife’s campaign for the 34th State Senate District. He is charming and very funny and full of unbelievable stories. His students have NO IDEA how much they will be learning from him.

I searched for more information about Daucher online and found this biography:

Donald Daucher focuses his practice in litigation and dispute resolution, including federal and state court litigation, arbitration and prelitigation work-out matters. He represents businesses and individuals in a variety of dispute-related areas and has been especially active in accounting disputes, in securities actions, in actions against governmental agencies, in construction litigation, in internet-related litigation, and in the coordination of nationwide product liability litigation.

Mr. Daucher was the Managing Partner of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker, a member of the Firm’s Policy Committee and the Firm’s Partner Compensation Committee from 1993 through October 1999. He is a former chair of the Firm’s litigation practice and a former chair of the Orange County office.

Mr. Daucher has served as past chair of the Watts Summer Games in Los Angeles and as a member of the Brea Planning Commission. He serves as a director of several educational, community and civic agencies.

Mr. Daucher received his B.S. degree in Accounting in 1967 from the University of Rochester and his J.D. degree in 1971 from Duke University, where he was a member of Order of the Coif and Recent Developments Editor of the Duke Law Journal.

I can also tell you that Daucher was the personal lawyer to Gene Autry, the former owner of the Angels baseball club. Daucher owns an incredible collection of baseball memorabilia. You can talk baseball with him for hours…

If you would like to congratulate Daucher on his new job, you can email Daucher or call him at (714) 459-1142.
