It looks like Karl Rove has quit the Bush administration. It’s about time. Here is an excerpt from a report from Bloomberg News:
Rove, 56, is a longtime political adviser to the president, having guided Bush’s political ascent from the Texas governor’s mansion to the White House. Rove’s resignation as deputy White House chief of staff was first reported today by the Wall Street Journal. It is effective Aug. 31.
“I just think it’s time,” Rove said in an interview with the Journal. “There’s always something that can keep you here, and as much as I’d like to be here, I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family.”
Rove is the most influential member of Bush’s original inner circle from Austin, Texas, to leave the White House. He leaves as Bush’s agenda for his remaining 17 months in office is largely dead in the water.
Rove told the Journal he considered leaving last year. He delayed his departure after his Republican Party lost control of Congress in the midterm elections and the president’s agenda was imperiled by dissent over the Iraq war and Bush’s proposal to overhaul U.S. immigration laws, which ultimately failed.
This won’t help Bush. He is doomed to go down as one of the least popular Presidents ever. Rove should have quit when the Reeps lost Congress.

No time is soon enough … well past the appropriate!
Good riddance.
He will soon show up as the lead strategist for one of the Presidential contenders. He will be baaaacccckkkkk !
Makes sense. Working for the President is a big deal, even when things are going badly. No point in sticking out to the bitter end, though. Pretty simple career/money move.
The bit about “I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family” is likely more about opportunism rather than family. We can only hope the Republican Party has learned that opportunists of this sort are a long term problem.
We can hope.
