Art — I think you are 100 percent correct here. Sire, I like the Republicans will gain some Asians and some Latinos, but the key word there is “some.”
What exactly are Republicans going to reach out with? An education program that mandates English only education, tax cuts for many people who won’t see benefits, or health insurance thay many woring men and women can’t afford.
It is not laziness. Why should Latinos vote for the Umbergs and Dunns of the world? The Democrats need to recruit viable Latinos if they want Latinos to vote.
But not Claudia Alvarez. She has no political future in the O.C.
It’s just flat out racist to suggest that Umberg and Dunn are not viable candidates because they are not Latino. Both have a track record of serving ALL of their constitiuency without using race as a divisive factor. The Latino racism on this blog is getting totally out of control.
No it’s not. It’s common sense. Look at what happened to Umberg last year? He tanked for a reason. You guys can’t keep importing these candidates and ignoring homegrown talent.
If you want Latinos to vote you need to give them someone to vote about that they will care about.
Look at all the losers who tried to take out Dornan – for years – but the one who succeeded was Loretta Sanchez.
And even Mike Metzler could not take out Jim Morrissey – but Lou Correa did.
Wake up and smell the coffee – if you want to take back the First District, Dunn is the wrong caballo to do it with…
Besides, didn’t he try to move the Court of Appeals to Irvine? That won’t play with local voters.
Dunn is not all that – he has been out of office for awhile. God knows how many people have moved out of the First District since he left office. A lot of voters here don’t know him anymore.
If Dunn is the best you guys can do, Nguyen will win, hands down. Same goes for Alvarez. She might be a Latina – but when she votes against sanctuary we will all know where she stands.
Joe Dunn has only been out of office for 7 months, you make it sound like he has been gone for eternity. SOme people have moved out, but most haven’t and still will remember him. Joe is the candidate Janet needs to fear the most. There is a reason even Gustavo Arellano dubbed him the “Best Latino Elected Official in Orange County.” Because he did take the time to understand the Latino community he represented and served their needs. He hired a Hispanic District Director and Two Hispanic staffers and a Hispanic political director. Umberg’s mistake was thinking the district he was elected to in 2004 is the same one he was elected to in 1990. In 14 years a lot changed.
And Jubal is correct, a man named Robert Banuelos ran against Dornan in 1992. He had no money and ran the campaign of a traditional sacrificial lamb. All he did was put out one mailer to a limited amount of voters and a few signs he gave to friends. At most he spent $2,000. The final result- 50% for Dornan, 42% for Banuelos. Of course a factor was the amount of Hispanics voting, plus the fact that Dornan never carried the district with 60% of the vote or more, he always had a large contingent of people who hated him with a vengeance, and with good reason.
So Jubal is wrong in the sense that she did now win because her last name was Sanchez, I believe it was a factor in her win and the 1992 results showed the weakness in Dornan’s armor and the key to beating him was a Hispanic candidate. But Jubal is right that Dornan had also set himself up for the loss. He never had the strong wall of support Sanchez has, which made him vulnerable to defeat.
Of course had anyone beaten Dornan, Dems nationwide would celebrate that person. I remember when I worked for John Kerry in Tucson during the primary. I always began my introduction speeches with “I began my political involvement helping to defeat Bob Dornan in 1996.” It would get a standing ovation from even the Deaniacs and Kucinich supporters. They knew who Dornan was. With most activists, they just wanted to see Dornan defeated and they would have taken anyone who could. The key was building a coalition, which was progressive caucasians and Hispanics, to defeat Dornan. Without the coalition Sanchez would have lost, so Jubal is correct that she would not have won with Hispanics alone in 1996. She won with a coalition, one that exists today which is why she keeps racking up such high totals.

This is great news if it is true Art. Do you know for sure that a Councilmember will be putting the Santa Ana as a Sanctuary city issue on an upcoming agenda? It’s ironic that Santa Ana is officially (They passed it in the 1960’s and there are still signs around town declaring it) “A Bird Sanctuary” but not a human sanctuary! It’s o.k. for any and all birds from South and Central America to come to our city and stay as long as they want to but God forbid a human being from the same countries come here! It’s time for Santa Ana to treat our human guests with the same respect we treat our feathered friends.
How do you feel about the viability of Sal Tinajero for Supervisor or Michele Martinez? If I were Joe Dunn I’d be locking up those two endorsements along with John Palacio just to make sure they won’t run against him and blunt Claudia’s support. Tinajero and Martinez have a free shot since thier council seats are not up. I think a full blown campaign, even if they didn’t win, would just build up more name I.D. for them for future battles. I read that Dunn had a fundraiser for Sanchez recently at his home so he may be getting her support. Also, have you noticed that Carlos Bustamonte has gone deep underground? Is he worried about getting re-elected to the council and trying to avoid negative publicity? Art/Claudio-Do you think there is anyone who can beat him? I noticed he has not endorsed Janet Nguyen even thougth 3 out of the remaining 4 Supervisors have endorsed her as has Scot Baugh. Any truth to the rumors that he might be leaving the Republican Party is terrible loss in the Supervisor race? Please check in with your Pajaritos and let your readers know what is going on. Keep up the great work!
OMG! Solorio has grown some berries.

We have a big tent in the Democratic Party.
Yea… blueberries. Tee hee, snicker.
Jose’s point is that Orange County might be 100% Latino some day and still have no political power if most of the residents are too lazy to vote.

Art:
Those “losers” the Dems nominated against Dornan prior to 1996 came in all colors. You’re forgetting a Latino fellow named Banuelos.
Loretta didn’t win just because her last name ended in “ez”.
