I wrote earlier this week about the Bower’s Museum price increase, and the detrimental affect it could have on Santa Ana residents. I have thought about this further and I have reached the conclusion that the Bowers could do a lot to change the public perception of their price increase by changing the way they deal with Santa Ana residents.
Currently the Bowers allows Santa Ana residents to visit their facility two times per month, on specific days. A better option would be to give us a membership card that would allow us to go to the Bowers anytime. Would that burden the museum? I think not. Our residents barely go there as it is. At least this way those who want to go could do so at their leisure.
Another idea would be to give us a card with 24 punch slots. We could choose when to go, up to 24 times a year, at our convenience. Again, this would empower Santa Ana residents to go when they want to.
If the Bowers directors really want to engage the people who subsidize them, they ought to take a look at these ideas or come up with something similar. If they don’t, we will know how they really feel about us.
could u update the long thread of SAUSD -Mijares leaving and corruption coming out
as its own post on the SAUSD links?
It is over 700 posts and it would be good to review what has happened over the last year or so.
Please give this consideration. People need to refer to one thread if they are interested in all the events going on in Santa Ana.
Thanks for the consideration
Mr. PedRAZA –
You say: “I wrote earlier this week about the Bower’s Museum price increase, and the detrimental affect it could have on Santa Ana residents.”
You then say in the very next paragraph: “Our residents barely go there as it is.”
Kind of contradicting statements, aren’t they?
How can a price increase have a “detrimental” effect on a population that “barely go there as it is”?
You are making less & less sense by the day……
Your solution is to issue 400,000 ID cards to Santa Ana residents? Is it crack or weed you are smoking tonight?
We cant even accurately count our residents……..how are we going to issue 400,000 ID cards?
Just be thankful you have a world-class museum in your own backyard that you can enjoy FOR FREE!!
It is so blatantly obvious that you are attacking the Bowers simply because of Bustamante. Stop the hate.
I thought for sure your son today at the zoo would be wearing a “Bustamante Sucks” t-shirt. I was happy to see that he wasnt.
God blessed you with a very handsome kid Art……he must take after his mother.
Poster 3,
Don’t be silly. The way to handle this is to print up perhaps 5,000 cards and issue them as folks show up, with ID or a utility bill.
As for the free enjoyment of the Bowers, don’t you agree that it would be better if we could choose when we go, instead of being restricted to two arbitrary dates?
Thanks for the kind words regarding my little boy. His mother is beautiful and I am sure he has many of her qualities.
Poster 2,
Not really. The new prices at the Bowers will only make it LESS likely that our people will go there. Why not engage them MORE instead of LESS? My suggestions are practical.
In fact I have thought about this a bit more, and another idea would be to have blackout dates with either of my suggestions, as Disney does with their passports. Residents would have the option of buying a card with no blackout dates for perhaps $50 to $100.
Also, residents who come in and get their cards can sign up for email updates, including PDF coupons for say $5 off, that they could use to bring their friends to the museum. Imagine that, new blood for the Bowers…
Poster 1,
Thanks for the reminder! Mission accomplished…
“wearing a “Bustamante Sucks” t-shirt”
Where can I buy such a shirt?
Are there plans for a Whitacre sucks shirt too?
Let’s see, issue ID cards to Santa Ana residents – that opens up the door for emotional debate about the definition of “resident” and the legal immigrant vs. undocumented immigrant issue. Me thinks this is a bad idea, let’s not go there — Potential barrel of worms.
Poster 8,
ID cards? I am talking about museum membership cards, not ID cards. And yes, they should be made available to all RESIDENTS of our city. Citizenship should not be part of this conversation.
Bowers — 2nd & 4th Tuesday
SAzoo — 2nd Tuesday
Discovery Science Center — 1st Monday
Yard Sales — First full weekend of third month of each quarter.
Main Library — Always free to visit when open.
and many more.
I think that Santa Ana has more dividends for its citizens than any of the other cities of Orange County.
I don’t see how that is a problem.
Take the day off work and enjoy your dividend with your family.
(I never seen the zoo that crowded this last Saturday)
Cook,
Bakersfield has six libraries, with half our population. Costa Mesa has three. Irvine has three.
As for the Bowers, wouldn’t it be great to go when you want to, instead of trying to go on only two pre-set days a month? Why are we allowing ourselves to be restricted when our tax dollars are keeping them afloat?
It is crystal-clear what is happening here: Art is shifting WAAAAAYYY left to appease the new leftists (& Alvarez) on the city council. I would bet my firstborn son that sometime in the next year the subject of cutting funds to the Bowers will be brought up by either Mr. Kyoto, Alvarez, or Martinez.
Art is just “testing the waters” for his leftists on the council. He gets to pay them back for his paid city position by floating out their crazy ideas & viewpoints. Art is the ideal puppet.
Art’s new scorecard:
World-class museum = bad!!
Millions of illegal immigrants = great!!
Poster 12,
Whoa! You are giving me far too much credit. I do think however that given the cash crunch the city is dealing with, it would make sense to revisit the Bowers subsidy.
On the other hand, I hope that the Bowers board will consider my suggestions and try to involve city residents instead of pushing them away.
As for being a puppet, not hardly. I am no one’s puppet.
#12 how is asking Bowers to be inclusive of all the residents that contribute money to the museum leftist ? If you appose this what does that make you ? Is your problem with this that the residents Art P. eludes to are Hispanic ? I believe that is what you are saying . Why shouldn’t funds be questioned if they are not servicing all of Santa Ana’s residents ? why would this be a crazy idea and point of view if it came from the Council members you mention ? Please answer these questions . I hope Bowers and decision makers ARE reading this and want no part of your message . Illegal immigration = great – Our government and some economists ( UCI ) recently in the Register presented research that showed this group to be responsible for an overall 4% raise in salaries for US citizens . Also foreign born residents are 1/5 less likely to be in jailed . Illegal immigrants are even less likely to be jailed . Another study directly places the children of Immigrants to be directly economically responsible for the success of social services needed by the Baby Bommers 20-30 years from now . So it is all not as crazy as you think . Your government and Academia see reality in the future . You are cuaght up in hurtful emotion .
Art says: “I hope that the Bowers board will consider my suggestions and try to involve city residents instead of pushing them away.”
I guess in the world of the lefties TWO free days per month is “pushing them away”. Amazing.
Does the same standard apply for the zoo?
Discovery Science?
Dont be a hypocrite……
Poster 15,
When those institutions raise their rates to $17 I will be writing about them as well. You can however join the SA Zoo for relatively little. My family has had membership in the zoo for several years.
Try going to the Discovery Science Center on the free day. It is a madhouse. They also ought to let us go when we want, again perhaps using the card with 24 opportunities to go at our leisure. We gave them the land, as I understand it!
And yes, to limit us to two pre-set days to visit the Bowers is indeed not a way to show that they want city residents involved in their museum. It tells us they don’t want to see us the rest of the time.
Art,
I like you idea of “cards.” It allows flexibility for residents to attend when they have time and promotes access to a great place within the City i.e. Bowers. However, instead of issuing new cards, which can cause problems, why doesn’t the City and Bowers allow residents to use their Library cards?
You do not need to issue that many and if you want one you go to the Library which hopefully will increase attends at both facilities.
#12
Art is no puppet.
You’ve been serving up too many peanuts and coffee enroute to nowhere.
