I really need to get some sleep, but first a few thoughts about tonight’s supervisorial election:
- The Democrats erred badly by not recruiting and backing a viable Latino candidate. Umberg’s career is now toast. Good riddance!
- The OC GOP machine got punked. They wasted A LOT of money on Carlos Bustamante and Trung Nguyen…and now the fiercely independent Janet Nguyen is calling the shots!
- Mark Rosen may have cost Umberg any chance at victory. Thanks Mark!
- Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido owes his party a huge apology! He is toast in two years.
- Isn’t it funny that most of Bustamante’s supporters ended up at Umberg’s party tonight? You have to wonder, how soon before Carlos Bustamante turns Democrat?
- John Lewis led a lot of good Republicans down the wrong road. He too will have much to answer for tomorrow.
- Janet has an opportunity to rebuild her relationship with Latinos in the 1st District. She will. I have faith in her good will. She is a decent person and I know she will work hard for all her constituents.
- Van Tran would have rather seen Umberg win than Janet. He too has much to answer for. His star is tarnished even more now.
- As usual, the consultants made out like bandits in this race. Win or lose, they end up with big, fat wallets.

As a Dem I for one can say we don’t want Carlos Bustamante. He is your party’s scumbag Art and you can keep him. Besides he fits in better with the righteous moralists in the GOP. With all his infidelity and the illegitimate kid, he and Timmy “Dub” are birds of a feather in the 69th AD.
“Janet has an opportunity to rebuild her relationship with Latinos in the 1st District.”
Art,
I don’t understand how Latinos would accept someone who made a “Us versus the Mexicans” a part of her campaign.
Come on now.
In fact, I’m not going share the same party with Janet and the Vietnamese community that accepts Mexican bashing. So long, its been a great nine year run.
Maybe, you should change your name to Nguyen since you have no problem with the anti-Mexican propaganda.
Poster 2,
Janet’s consultant, Dave Gilliard, does have a lot to answer for. The anti-immigrant flier he put together was awful. I really don’t think it reflects what Janet is all about. Give her a chance.
Janet has 10 years to prove she is the leader of the entire First District and she will do so. I’m sure she did not approve that mailer. She sent out so much mail that some was bound to get mailed without her ok. Janet is the future of the Republican Party in the Central O.C. Carlos is finished. He will lose the Mayor Pro Tem title after holding if for just a month. Why would the other Dem Councilmembers want to help a guy who says in the Buzz Blog he is not done running for office but is not sure what office to run for. He will have a VERY tough time holding on to his seat in 2 years. The Unions and Dem’s and his fellow councilmembers will make sure of that!
Welcome to the new era of Politics!
“It’s the Year of the Woman”
It
Carlos should be ashamed of himself for taking over $300,000 from GOP Fat Cats in this pitiful effort. They should all demand their money back! The Emperor
Over ten thousand people asked Jose Solorio if it was okay to vote for Carlos Bustamante, and Jose said NO. Tee hee, ha ha ha, snicker, snicker, end of story.
Hey Carlos, next time simeone asks you for an endorsement, do yourself a favor…..GIVE IT!!!!
“I look forward to working with Janet in the 1st district.” Michele.
How do you know that she is looking forward working with Michele?
Pulido toast in two years? Only if he decides not to run.
Going against him is political suicide. Who has the cajones to walk that plank?
Mr. “Kyoto Treaty” doesnt have a chance.
Pulido is a very rare breed indeed. He is rapidly becoming an endangered species: A MODERATE Democrat!!!
(In comparison to the Bush-lied-people-died, Halliburton, I-voted-for the $87 million-before-I-voted-against-it, “I think the surge of troops into Baghdad is a terrible thing…….but I dont have the stones to vote against funding it”, school vouchers/choice is a bad thing, lets pass out condoms to 13-year-olds, its a bad idea to notify parents when a 12-year-old gets an abortion…..absolutely crazy far left-wing WACKOS that control the Democratic Party today)
As a small business owner, he is EXTREMELY pro-business (unlike Mr. Kyoto Treaty, which is about as anti-business as you can get).
He doesnt “lose” millions of taxpayer dollars & then when confronted threatens to protest the D.A.’s office with a thousand angry people waving Mexican flags. (Sound familiar, Mr. N.L.?)
The minorities of Santa Ana (whites, Asians, blacks) can be comforted and assured that he wont be at any Spanish-only, anti-English school rallies anytime soon.
People of Santa Ana are comforted knowing that he supports our police 100% & wont throw them under the bus like the WACKO leadership of South Gate & Maywood have done in recent years.
People like the fact that he constantly avoids the limelight, while other Councilmembers ABSOLUTELY RELISH attention. He tries to quietly do the best job he can, while others call every media they can get their hands on for dog & pony shows.
Republicans vote for him because the status quo is a MUCH safer way to go than installing a far left-winger. (like Mr. Kyoto Treaty)
People appreciate the surprisingly good quality-of-life that the city has seen develop under his stewardship.
People are excited that his leadership has brought a revitalization of downtown that was not even imaginable when he took office (Everybody except Sean, he REALLY does not like revitalization).
Not bad for a city where over 60% of all adults are illegal aliens (the S.A. Chambers’ 2004 number, not mine), and over half do not speak fluent English.
I challenge anybody to find a city of comparable demographics that has a better quality of life than we do. Nobody will….because said city does not exist.
Anon 10:35 is Julie Stroud, just thought you all should know that.
Nice try. Guess again.
Santa Ana commissioners should have a shelf life and not be recycled like Julie Stroud and Donnie Cribb. Move on so other residents can come forward and serve their community.
One thing’s for sure, Julie is a feckless one. Looks like Miguel is in her good graces this week.
“Nice try. Guess again.”
Ed Gonzalo?
The Good old boys in the Dems and GOP lose. Let’s try some frsh candidates in the Dems. I hope to see labor and the Dems make the same efforts for someone othr than Umberg. only time will tell. It is amazing how much money was spent of this race.
<"Santa Ana commissioners should have a shelf life and not be recycled like Julie Stroud and Donnie Cribb. Move on so other residents can come forward and serve their community".i>
You are kidding, right? COMLINK meetings get about three new faces every month. The other 25 people are the same faces. Over & over & over again. Not even free food & drinks can draw more people in!!
I am amazed that there are even enough willing bodies to fill the board seats.
The level of apathy in this city of nearly 400,000 is shocking. Benny Diaz gets 200-something votes. People just didnt care yesterday.
TO #9 who says …
“Going against him is political suicide. Who has the cajones to walk that plank?”
Michele Martinez did and she prevailed despite the odds.
Michelle Martinez never ran against Pulido. Did you bump your head?
#16 “Michele Martinez did and she prevailed despite the odds”
Martinez is another pretty face who will leave council in despair as did Mike Garcia.
#5 “It’s the Year of the Woman”
By the Chinese Calendar, 2007 is the year of the Pig (boar) a.k.a. by its former name of Ding Hai.
Please take note of it.
For #17
You’re right, Michele did not oppose Miguel this last election cycle, however she did refuse Miguel’s offer to move from her primary residence, Ward 2, to Ward 6, to oppose Sal Tinajero. Martinez’s refusal to shop wards cost her the endorsement of fire and police.
Turning away the mother’s milk of politics – $$$ – took cajones. Martinez did beat Miguel.
Checkmate.
At least we agree that Michele and Mike Garcia are two handsome faces on the Santa Ana political scene.
# 20
Do you just make up things as you go along? Michele didn’t get the endorsement from Police & Fire for several reasons…and her not moving wasn’t one of them.
She’s young and green..and her post here about looking forward to working with Janet, year of the woman, blah blah, before all the votes were counted, shows how green she is.
As an ELECTED OFFICIAL of the largest City in the 1st. District, she should have stayed quiet until the election was final. Then sent her “best wishes” to the winner along with her “looking forward to working with you”. Apparently, no one told her they were still counting votes or that they still have more to count, or that there may be a recount. She needs a staffer assigned to her to teach her protocol and/or common sense.
Post # 20 , the previous post was not made up. You do offer good advice . Her enthusiasm “is” refreshing , don’t beat her up over it. Don’t hate – help out.
Corrections : (1) Post #20 should be post #22 . (2)The reference to previous post is for #20
#22
Did you bump your noggen or did your mama drop you when you were a baby?
#20 posted Michele did not receive the endorsement of fire and police.
Note to all;
All that gushing in Post #9 can be only one of two people. His wife( a repoter) or that lap dog named Jill.
