Moreno returns to the OC GOP!

Ryan Gene Williams, a Republican Assembly candidate this year, let me know today that he will be appointing OC Supervisorial candidate Lupe Moreno as his alternate to the OC GOP Central Committee in January.

Moreno told me in an interview this evening that she registered as a Republican on December 21, after a previous conversation we shared regarding the opening in the 1st Supervisorial District.

Moreno quit the party earlier this year when the party endorsed OC Sheriff Mike Carona. She was also upset with the way President Bush and the Republican Party appeared to be handling the immigration issue. Moreno had tried to resign before, but OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh would not accept her resignation.

Williams said, “Baugh should be very happy to welcome back one of our most dedicated volunteers into the Republican fold. I look forward to working with Lupe next year to advance the GOP in Santa Ana.”

Williams and Moreno will be part of the 69th Assembly Caucus – which was rife with turmoil this year after caucus Chair Tim Whitacre endorsed a number of local Democrats against candidates who were endorsed by the Republican Party of Orange County.

Other caucus members include former Santa Ana Council Member Brett Franklin, who is also running for the 1st Supervisorial District, and James Vanderbilt, who serves on the Anaheim City School Board. Longtime Central Committee member Nina Brazelton is also part of this caucus, as is the writer of this article.

Williams also has an ex-officio vote in the caucus. Williams serves on the Orange County Alcohol & Drug Advisory Board. He lives in the West Floral Park neighborhood of Santa Ana.

Moreno previously ran for the 34th State Senate District this year, losing to Assemblywoman Lynn Daucher. She is the Chair of the Santa Ana Library Advisory Board, and she works for the County of Orange, in the immunizations department. Moreno is a nationally recognized activist against illegal immigration. She resides with her family in Santa Ana.
