I have been saying for weeks now that Latino Democrat leaders are sabotaging their gubernatorial candidate, Phil Angelides, and the latest evidence is a mailer sent out this week by the Lou Correa campaign for the 34th Senate District.
A friend called me yesterday and he noted that the flier touted Correa as a candidate who would not raise taxes – something that seems intellectually dishonest when you consider that he continues to plead for state-provided free health insurance for undocumented immigrants. Perhaps Lou has found a pot of gold that he intends to use for this welfare benefit? The flier also noted that Correa would fight against higher taxes – unlike Phil Angelides. I don’t have the exact wording, as I am still trying to get a copy of the mailer, but it was something to that effect.
That’s right – Correa is actually dumping on his fellow Democrat candidate, Angelides. Surely his camp has polled the district and found what I predicted some time ago – Angelides has become a drag on the entire Democrat ticket. My sources tell me that even Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is starting to worry – given how much money her opponent, Tan Nguyen, continues to pour into his campaign.
Correa’s GOP opponent, Lynn Daucher, continues to pour it on, in the meantime. She has hundreds of volunteers, plenty of money, and her staff has ample ammunition to use aginst Correa in the final weeks of the campaign. And she can expect to get a pick-up from voters backing Schwarzenegger. Unlike Correa, who is watching his campaign go down the drain as Angelides wreaks havoc on his fellow Democrats. No se puede Lou!
Update: I now have jpg files of the mailer in question. I have reproduced a portion of it above. If you want to see the rest, email me at apedroza@earthlink.net.
Sorry, Art, but your friend told you wrong.
I have a copy of the “tax” mailer right next to me, and let me give you a quote from it:
“Lou Correa is a Democrat who opposes higher taxes- he won’t raise our taxes without voter approval.”
That’s what it said… Notice that there’s NO REFERENCE to Angelides and taxes.
Oh, but there is this little treasure of a quote:
“His Republican opponent actually lobbied Governor Wilson to KEEP the car tax!”
That’s right… Back in the day when Lynn Daucher was on the Brea council, she SUPPORTED the now-infamous “car tax”… or vehicle license fee. Now, however, Lynn’s bragging about being a “taxpayer advocate” and misrepresenting Lou’s record (as well as her own) on fiscal issues.
Now Art, I understand that as a Republican, you’re working hard for Daucher. I have no problem with that… Now what I DO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH is misrepresenting someone else’s record… And putting words into the other person’s mouth.
Andrew,
I hate to break it to you my friend, but it would appear that Correa sent out two mailers – one to Democrat households and a different one to Republican voters. The latter piece does in fact rip Angelides. I will have a PDF copy of it later today, and would be happy to email it to you. I don’t know how to load the PDF file onto this blog…
OK, if you’ve got the proof, then I’ll be more than happy to say I was wrong. I’d just find it odd that they send different anti-tax mailers to Democrats and Republicans. Usually, I’d think a mailer from “Orange County Small Business Owners” would be attractive to Repugs.
Art, please e-mail it to me as well.
Were these mailers FROM the Correa campaign or produced by another entity?
My tired eyes still can’t find any reference to Angelides. Does anyone disagree with Lou Correa opposing unnecessary taxes and government spending on inefficient and wasteful programs. If only our dear Mayor Pulido was as thoughtful.
Art
Politics or prediction?
“Latino Democrat leaders are sabotaging their gubernatorial candidate”
But Art intentionally forgets to mention it till his second post that Lou’s republican mail-piece is the one that hits Angelides, not the targeted mailer that democrats are receiving.
That’s politics, and not like Art “the conspiracy theorist” claims as some sort of sabotage.
It seems funny that Art seems to forget that political campaigns do send out targeted messages to targeted groups.
This is no prediction? Instead, this is what the poll numbers tell a campaign to naturally avoid associating with another person, elected official, propositions, law, etc….
Can we imagine how many pro-union, pro-democrats slate mailers we will be receiving asking for support for Lynn Daucher?
Moreover, Art do you think that Lynn “the bullodozer” Daucher will be touting the policies of the bush administration on her next mailers.
I have a prediction that Lynn will not even mention George Bush, just like Arnold is doing, to the voters in this senate district.
3:37,
I can’t tell. The mailer appear to be from Correa’s campaign, but I don’t see any FPPC information on it. The mailer was edited to remove the name and address of the recipient.
It appears to be from Correa’s campaign. Perhaps Claudio or Andrew could ask his campaign manager for further clarification? I expect that the Register will be covering this, perhaps in Wisckol’s column tomorrow.
WHOA, NELLY! This is a totally different mailer here… I haven’t received this one… Maybe it is just for Reps?
Well, I guess I’ll add this to my personal grievance list with Lou. I never said he was perfect. However (with flaws and all), I’d still take Lou over out-fo-towner Lynn.
I must say that at least Lou’s been consistent about his position on taxes. I’ve heard him say before that only the voters should decide on tax issues. Though I may not agree with him on EVERY ISSUE [I’m probably slightly to the left of Trotsky! : ) ], I know Lou actually takes Central County into consideration when deciding on his votes.
Oh, and as for where this mailer came from…
I’ll do a little investigation, and share with you what answers I find. : )
Andrew,
Thank you – I look forward to reading your findings. I am very curious as to whether the mailer came from Lou’s campaign or some third party…
Why is this mailer a surprise? I agree this is not throwing PA under the bus but it does set Lou apart from PA as John Garamendi and many other Dems are in the process of doing. It works because Lou has never really followed the Party line on many issues so its not a stretch.
The surprise is why he isn’t mailing out more of stuff like this.
