Kudos to Amy Taxin at the Total Buzz blog – she dug up an apparent campaign finance violation by David Benavides, a candidate for Ward 4 on the Santa Ana City Council. Benavides is a favorite of Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido. Here is Taxin’s article:

I wish you’d post Amy’s reporting on the Birtcher5 (B5) donations to Jennifer Villasenor. It’s startling the B5 have donated $5,000 towards her campaign. That’s 50% of total donations reported on her latest campaign disclosure statement.
It appears Miguel is hustling.
Benavides response to getting caught accepting $500 from a developer, whose project he voted on, is a troubling. His explanation .. “I don’t want to be involved with anything that could be in question” is the standard no-response response.
Benavides accepts no responsibility for the campaign finance violation pertaining to the David DiRenzio contribution he accepted.
Couple this with the current controversy brewing over his pro-choice and pro-life positions. Playing this social issue, for political gain, is the same crap the REPS are dispensing these days. And he’s the pastor of a local community church.
So far, two of Pulido’s candidates have stink on them regarding political donations.
Still time for more October surprises.
david, tino and jenn all have stink from the phony police and fire endorsements and the chamber endorsement of pulido pal and neighbor mike metzler.will this be another election bought and paid for with dirty money?just like the car dealers.give with one hand and take with the other.
anon said, “this be another election bought and paid for with dirty money”
Right…not like that “clean” mob money the SEIU and other employee unions will spend for Tinjero and his candidate mobsters!
A vote for benavides, villasenor and rivera is a vote for four more years of corruption, waste and greed.time to move.
Dear David,
Thank you for voting to approve my project.
Please stop by soon to claim your condo.
Tell Victoria Betancourt I said Hi!
PS. Big Mike Harrah left
an envelope here for you.
Returning the money was not enough.
In fact he should be charged with a misdemeanor as per both the City Charter and the FPPC rules and removed from his planning seat.
He should also remove himself from the council race.
Will City Attorney Fletcher do anything about this?
