I just received the press release enclosed below from my friends at the Coalition for Fair Employment in Construction. They will be celebrating the end of the Orange County PLA, at an upcoming fundraiser on May 11. If you are an elected official or candidate with an interest in finding out more about how to stop government-mandated, union-only project labor agreements (PLA’s), be sure to RSVP!

Building a Better California
We Cordially invite you to a reception to update you about the discriminatory tactics used by construction union leaders in California – particularly threats and intimidation against owners to secure favorable
That’s right, don’t restrict the contracts to union labor only. We wouldn’t want employers to have to pay a living wage! Heavens, that would never do.
people shouldn’t be forced into joining labor unions anyway.
Gila,
You are aware, I am sure, that less than 15% of the labor force in this country is unionized? So union-only PLA’s ban the great majority of workers – that is a grievous injustice!
I agree with Michael when he says people shouldn
dont forget Art teaches non-union apprentices at Cerritos College. Probably some illegals go to his class thanks to Lyn Daucher and others who voted to allow them to pay the low residence tuition. This is why Art is so worked up about this. But he is biting the hand of Daucher that sent some of his students.
Alot of these non-union construction companies end up getting bids on contracts where there are PLA’s…those non-union workers are not banned, they just have to pay reduced rate union dues while they are on the PLA job and they get the union benefits. They are not banned.
You are aware, I am sure, that less than 15% of the labor force in this country is unionized?
Not relevant. What’s relevant is the percentage of the California construction labor force that’s unionized.
Art Pedroza suggests that 85 percent of the nation
2:15,
??? The company I work for does not hire illegals.
BTW, I read in the paper today yhat a whole slew of unions supported the riots in L.A. this week. Sounds like they are the ones hiring illegals…
All-
What the heck is an illegal worker/immigrant. Do I need to remind you there is no way a person can be illegal, as the term in itself defines an action.
No person is illegal.
Art,
You lie. We Real Republicans know for a fact that you and the companies you front for have hired illegals.
Answer some questions, Art:
Will you deny that A.J. Kirkwood & Associates, Bergelectric, Helix Electric, Hensel Phelps Construction, Mel Smith Electric, Sunwest Electric hire illegal immigrants?
Did you (and your monied business-owners) or did you not lose an anti-PLA law suite against the Rancho college district in your companies’ attempt to hire undocumented aliens?
Are you not in fact a member of the Cerritos College faculty union, local 6215? As a member of that union, do you not reap the benefits (pay raises) of negotiated union contracts with that college district? Why don’t you come clean on this issue?
You think that we Real Republicans will elect you onto our party’s central committee? Not this June 6th we won
10:41,
I am not lying. I don’t work for any of the companies you referenced. On occassion I do work on a contract basis for the CFEC. I don’t work for the ABC in any capacity.
Also, I have blogged before about my membership in the teacher’s union at Cerritos College. I don’t hide that fact. My wife also belongs to the SEIU, as a Disneyland employee.
I really don’t care if pro-PLA Republicans vote for me or not. Vote for whomever you find interesting. There are seven of us running, for six seats, so someone has to lose. If that is me, that will only assure me more time to spend with the family.
I have no delusions re my GOP aspirations. A friend of mine asked me to run for the Central Committee, and so I did. I am running for the 69th A.D. Central Committee – and I am the only Latino candidate, which is curious given the demographics in that district.
If anyone is lying, it is you – but that is about what I expect from union bosses and their sycophants, Republican or otherwise.
